Regarding the old one, do you know why it died? When did you purchase it? How long did it function before death? Were there warning signs of imminent failure or was it a surprise?
The drive was about 15 months old. Don't remember the poweron time it had but wasn't too much - PC is probably on for about 4 hours a day. It reported a smart error (relocated sector count) on boot and in Windows but still worked ok for a couple of weeks before getting worse, causing Windows to run a disk check on it every bootup and crashing Windows if I tried to write to it.
I'm paranoid about my data and have copies of it all over the place so the drive failing didn't cause me any problems but it was nice to get the smart warning.
