Garmin recommendations?

I need to be able to use strava and I also want speed and cadence. Maps would be an advantage but not a must have. Am I looking at a 500? Or can I spend less?I'm currently using my phone for strava.

Alternatively, I recommend the Bryton Rider 40. I've used one for the last two weeks and it does everything a Garmin Edge 500 does but slightly cheaper. It even uses the same mount as the Garmin so you can use the same aftermarket handlebar mounts (e.g. SRAM QuickView).

The only negative is the upload to Strava is not quite as quick, but we're talking 30 seconds difference. You have to use the Bryton software to extract the GPX file which you then upload via the Strava website.

Edit: just had a look they were knocking these out earlier in the year for close to £100 including cadence and heart rate strap, but they're not that cheap at the moment. You can still pick up a second hand bargain though on eBay/Bikeradar forums. I paid £80 for a fully boxed one in perfect condition a few weeks back. Second hand 500s still seem to go for over £100 which is crazy when they are £130 new.

One thing worth trying if your GSC-10 (Garmin Cadence Sensor) is playing up is replacing the battery. I've had mine maybe three years now and recently it had started showing no speed intermediately even when I was hammering it along. Swap of the battery sorted it out completely.

I also found that angling the arm of the sensor downwards towards the ground as far as you can get it to go before touching the spokes is better than angling the arm upwards, which I believe is how its pictured in the instruction manual. It seems more reliable and aesthetically looks a little nicer too.

talking of Garmins etc

I have a Garmin 800, what's the best way to backup the data?

I have almost a years worth of rides still on my Garmin, yes I upload to strava, garmin connect and endemondo
I want to be able to back it all up on my PC , so that I can delete them off my garmin, and then later restore them if I wanted to

thanks

Is there any GPS type device that would be good for cycling and running or should I just stick with my phone. I know they have specific devices but I am not made of money :)

Can you not just copy and paste the rides from your Garmin to your PC?

Second hand motoactv is probably best.

I use mine mainly for running as I have an edge 800 but I've used the motoactv with a bike mount and its worked just as well.

I manly agree, i had a Bryton 40 but now a 500, the 500 is better but only a little bit here and there and the Bryton is very good for around £100 but dont get the bryton cadnece sensor as its cack - the garmin one works fine tho!

Garmin do a QR kit for the Forerunner 310XT so it will sit on your bars if you want.

I've used my 310XT for tones of running, a bit of cycling (before getting an Edge 800) and some multi-sport adventure races.

It's an older model now so some deals about.
