Loose bearings like that are easy to service.

Loose bearings like that are not easy to service :p

Clean it up with wd40 and see what it looks like.
If it's just dirty, and looks good when it's clean, wipe off all the wd40, regrease it and put it all back together.
If it's pitted or corroded and you cant clean it back to a perfect shine, you need a new headset.

Loose bearing headsets are all I have ever had up until recently.

They are easy to service.

Doesn't matter if the bearing surfaces are a little pitted.
clean, apply a bead of grease, sit all the balls in the grease and pull the fork upwards. Repeat for the top race.

(best to replace the balls looking at the state of them)

Getting the headset replaced is a bike shop job, unless you have the tools.

It looks like an integrated headset to me (although, i'v never seen an integrated headset with loose bearings before?) which doesnt need any special tools to replace.

Seems like there's integrated cups although there is a very small lip on each one. I can't pop them out though. The headset consists of an upper race, ball bearngs and two dust covers plus the cap. The fork has an integrated lower race.

Cartridge headset sounds much nicer. The lower ends bearings are done for, can't believe how filthy it is too.

Loose ball headsets can give years of service if they are regularly greased.

It's not fuu barred looking at it and it could be made useable again.

I have bought a rocket tool and headset press now, but I never needed those before in the days of loose balls.

I guess we have different standards as to what is acceptable. Pitted races would mean it's getting changed for me.

One 23 do a fairly cheap semi integrated headset with 36x45 cartrdige bearings that mean you can just drop new bearings in at some point in the future.

I would only change it if it felt rough when re-assembled.

Depends on how bad the pitting was, most likely it would just be superficial.

The other way around, surely?
You need a press for old-style loose bearing headsets, modern drop-in cartridges dont need to be pressed in.

I needed the press to fit my new FSA cartridge headset to my On-One.

FSA Orbit Extreme Pro.

I never needed to replace a loose ball headset as they were always serviceable.

Sooo... my best option is to get some more ball bearings, clean it all up and re-assemble with grease?

If the face has had it, what are my options? I don't really want to fork out for tools to remove and seat cups if possible.

I also need a new BB as there's some play in that. It's a Truativ Elita crankset. Will an SRAM GXP BB do the trick?

Be aware that Truativ GXP BBs are made of cheese. I'd look for any alternative I could get.

So my reading has discovered. Apparently you can get a Hope BB with an adapter and that looks like all my options. Hope are local to me though so that's an advantage.

Can you not swap the crankset along with the bb?

:D Says the guy who's penny pinching with your headset. :o

What shifters do you have?
