nothing new.

Nope. Someone in the top gear thread in motors that it's "brave" of the bbc to be showing it, and it really isn't. There's nothing edgy in there, and it's basically just towing the bbc green pro cycling line with a few fairly soft jibes in there. Red/green lawl yes we know, it's embarrassing when our two wheeled brethren do it, it's not a new criticism. It's not like it was channeling the comments you get in the cycling arguments here or elsewhere on the web.

Looking for some advice. I am after my first road bike as I want to start cycling for fitness reasons. So I have been looking on the net and a few bikes have come up as being recommended. So far I have seen B'Twin Triban 3/5, Merlin S2200/Maven for the rough area of cost I was hoping to spend. Would I gain much for going for a larger make like Giant, Specialized or Trek as from the looks of the specs you certainly seem to get a lot more for your money when you keep away from the large makes.

Really any advice is welcome as there seems to be so much choice which just makes the whole buying process so much more difficult!

I wouldn't get a Triban 3, sure great bike/frame and fork but the components and wheels suck.

Shimano Sora is the lowest I would want to go to enjoy cycling which would mean second hand.

I picked up a Specialized Allez with full compact Shimano Sora and Mavic wheels for £350. It's hardly been used and is good value for money.

Ensure you get 'compact' double crankset 50/34 teeth rings and a rear cassette of around 12-27

Triple chainsets on roadbikes are dreadful - unless your touring and carrying loads that is.

Harsh! My Trek (which I bought second hand in Oct 2012) is a triple and it's fine.

One of our guys rides a Cube with a triple. Any climb we go up he gets gyp from us saying he did it in the granny ring, never mind the fact that he's invariably doing it in 39x25 compared to our 34x28s...

Granny on a triple is 30t, Shirley?

My point exactly, though apparently badly worded. We give him gyp accusing him of doing it in the 30t, when more than likely he's in the middle ring at 39t while we're all on our 34t compact small rings.

Fine maybe, but a compact double would be much nicer.

Edit - better chain line, lighter, all the gears you really need (34/28 climbing gear) neater looking, cranks closer together - better 'Q factor'

I thought a road triple was 30/42/52 - mine was anyhow.

Ah! I see it's changed to 30/39/50 now.

Hate the met office/weather forecasting.

Earlier today the forecast for tomorrow was sunny and <5% chance of rain all day. Now it's changed to cloudy and 20% chance of rain all day. Was expecting to be up tomorrow for a nice ride in the sun and now it's going to be cloudy, and more likely to rain.

Winter is rubbish. Bring on summer.

It was very clear and probably going to remain that way for the rest of the day, but by god it was cold at 7am on the ride in! My nipples temporarily turned to in-ies.

It was a little chilly but nothing unbearable. I'm still getting used to moving from jeans to cycling shorts for commuting though (turns out doing 200+ miles a week in jeans was rapidly rubbing away all the skin where my ass touches the saddle, ouch :/).

Weather forecast for the rest of the day looks amazing. Normally I'd "work from home" or book it off but sadly major upgrade project today so I have to stick around. Bah.
