Road Cycling Essentials

^ Two weeks in a row. Everything east of Westminster was closed all weekend for the triathlon, weekend just gone :D

I just bought my 1st bike for about 30 years!

Its a 2011 Trek 8000 like here Very pleased and brings back old memories when I was a kid. I have got this mainly for fitness and it has trail/road tyres.

I dont intend on servicing myself but want to adjust the seat and anyother basic settings. Can you reccomend a simple light tool I can carry around to do this or will I need something more?

I was given a helmet with it; anything else I might need?

How often do you cycle? If it has been every weekend then an extra 10km to 50km is nothing really. You could do it in your next ride. :)

I ride at least the 3 mile journey to work (although I usually extend it to about 10-15 miles on the way home) and then try and do at least one longer ride at weekends.

I'm thinking that I might just jump on a train with the bike this weekend to somewhere and then ride home. Get myself out of my comfort zone :D

I go to the Streatham Fitness first, they have plenty of plates there, really good freeweights section. 2 full squat racks, fixed flat bench, fixed decline bench, 5-6 adjustable benches and DBs from 8 - 50kgs. Also got a swimming pool, sauna and steam. £60 a month.

I could make 7.15 at Wandsworth and we could ride together from there, I actually live in Clapham, so it should be a fairly mutual meeting point

coolios! I'll let you know closer to Saturday if I'm around :)

Chinese saddle arrived today. Does not look comfy!

it's not too bad! rode in this morning and I can't complain tbh :D

you guys are crazy with these naked carbon saddles, I've been there trying to save as much weight as possible but its not worth it. For an extra 35grams you can get something with all day comfort.

You say that.. But my previous -; over £20 saddle.. Weights in at 286g! Where this for £17 sits at 98g and comfort wise seems to be quite good! Not as soft but not bad at all.. Being narrow it should also be good for longer rides :o :)

Try doing a ride on the saddle for 5 hours before commenting on comfort!

:p

I'm needing a new saddle myself. They're such awkward things to get right once you're used to a particular saddle. I'll measure my current one and see if I can get a similar match.

A mate of mine bought an Arione and hated it for the first few rides. Eventually he got used to it and now loves it!

I've been through so many saddles and a fake tioga spyder from aliexpress is impossible to beat, mine cost £26, is 135grams, and trust me its the most comfortable seat you could imagine, the flex molds perfectly and adds a bit of suspension. Honestly your bum will thank me!

So tempted by that £17 carbon saddle, but I'm conscious that saddle comfort is extremely subjective, and the stock Boardman one that came with my bike is the most comfy I've ever had :( But.... carbon

I actually have one and a vurtu one (or something like that), they have steel rails so weigh about 175grams but still both very comfortable. The decent tioga fakes still have the titanium rails making them 140'ish grams.
