Road Cycling Essentials

Treated myself to my 1st pair of shoes and SPD clipless pedals, allowing time to have a play clipping/unclipping.

Set of for my first ride using them and picking a route that had plenty of opportunities for me to try my new skills.

All was going so well, just slowing down for the last turn b4 getting home - OOPs :D

Luckily I toppled over on a grassy verge, no harm no foul :o

Here's the route I did, no idea if the results are good or bad.

All I know is that I enjoyed it (even the toppling over)

If anyone is looking for a trainer / crit frame / uber commuter then there is a 56cm 2008 Cervelo Soloist frame going for a bargain on eBay. It's a year newer than mine so it's black rather grey.

It's a classic and better than most carbon frames on the market today.

I'm tempted myself.

Have you tried connecting up the Garmin to your PC and routing around the sd card/onboard storage for ride files?

Happened to me after a 78 mile ride too. Such fun :/

My own ride plans for today have been cancelled. Going to meet some friends in Solita for lunch and then come back to do a Sufferfest session on the turbo *cry*.

I looked in the activities folder and there's nothing beyond Friday's turbo session, so I think I'm boned. When I plugged it in it did spend forever "Working" so it must have been stuck on something.

Thats a bugger because you can repair the FIT files;

On my new 810 i had the auto upload to Garmin Connect set and my mobile phone didnt have an internet connection at the time when i saved it so it failed, it didnt save it on the 810 either (it was only a 0.1 mile test so nothing major). I've since de-activated the auto upload and so it just saves the ride, i then go into the rides and pick it and pick upload and it works everytime as long as my phone has a wifi or 3G connection. If it doesnt its still saved on the 810.

(but i know you have a 500, i have one and tbh it hasnt missed a beat in 2yrs).

Went out to Surrey with Womble/Tom this morning. I'm now ruined.

I thought I was a lightweight but I'm a fatty compared to Womble!

Lunch,2x chocolate bars and a sticky toffee pudding will soon solve that problem! Bit ruined too ... still was a good ride even though the last stretch felt more like survival than anything else

Thought about going out this morning on my bike but i looked at my weather app on my phone and opted not to bother. 37km/h winds, this afternoon it rose to 53km/h, currently sitting at 54km/h so turbo it is tonight then! :(

Since I sort of missed summer this year planning on some sunny riding in the new year. Is it Tenerife which is decent for biking?

Sure someone on here went there , any recommendation as to where to stay and what hotel ?

Any of the Canaries/Balearics are pretty damn good, Majorca/Tenerife are supposed to be best, although Tenerife is generally a bit windier.

I went out to Cyprus earlier in the year, and although not as popular as the others had a great time, you get slightly warmer weather earlier in the year, and don't get such wind conditions, and there are some fantastic roads/climbs, if you like suffering! Once you get out of the main towns the roads are pretty good and there is some cracking scenery, not to mention the absoulte tranquility of riding for an hour without seeing anyone whatsoever.

Weather could be a bit dodgy in Majorca in Feb though.

Anyone got any hotel which town suggestions?

I went to tenerife in February this year. Weather was great, got up to 37c one day by the coast. Gets colder as you get higher though, i think 13c was the lowest we saw.

We stayed in Oro Blanco apartments in Las Americas, didnt have any trouble keeping our bikes in the apartment. There's not much wind on the south side of the island (shielded by the mountain) and never any rain. Average rainfall for the south of the island is 116mm per year - west scotland has had more than that in the past 2 days alone! It's quite busy around the coast but much quieter when you get up into the hills a bit.

It's very lumpy! There is literally no flat road around. It's great if you're going for training but if you want a touring holiday it'll get boring very quickly. The climbs are huge as well, not too steep but just go on forever. Mt Teide is the highest point in Spain, so when you start at sea level, you can image it's a pretty big climb.

I've been to Mallorca as well, the geography there is much better for cycling (pretty much half flat and half alpine-style climbs) but the weather isnt as good. Been a few times in March/April and it's usually 16-24c at that time of year.
