Road Cycling Essentials

I think cleaning after every ride is a bit over the top ha :) I barely clean mine.. only thing I do is make sure that components are not dry as such.

See, i think that just highlights the difference of cycling in london compared to where some of us ride. To not clean the bike after i've been on a winter ride is not really an option.

I generally come back from most of my rides in winter looking like i've just completed Paris Roubaix or something!

What constitutes a full rebuild?

For me, a "full rebuild" would mean:

New cables (inners + outers)
New chain
new cassette
repack wheel bearings
repack headset

+strip everything down to bare frame and clean each part individually.

I wouldnt be doing all that every winter though, maybe every couple of years.

I think the main difference is between riding on your own vs riding in a group.
Even if the rider in front has mudguards, you and your bike are still going to get covered in salty, muddy water.

yup :) but I do it during summer so once a year! normally a repaint too.. :o

Do you have a load of campag tools (at great expense) or do you rely on the LBS?

The only Campag specific tool I needed during my build was a cassette tool (unless I've forgotten something). My UT BB and bearings were push fit. Its good to gradually build up your arsenal of tools, its reduces any dependency on the LBS.

If you bought Campag branded tools then yes, they are ridiculously overpriced!

Yeah. Pretty much the same here. I usually do this at the start of summer or a few weeks before I go to Majorca.

Got to concur with this too.

Its a pretty lively discussion today :)

Sorry to distract from the discussion of winter/summer bikes but is anyone aware of any tool/spreadsheet online for comparing prices and weights of components? I've seen stuff like this but it doesn't really cover everything. I was thinking of creating a google doc with a load of info in it and a few formulas to make it easy to compare prices and weights but if the work has already been done...

Everyone seems to have their own personal options, there does not seem to be any general consensus on the matter. Personally Id feel bad leaving my bike for a couple of weeks without giving it a clean down. Especially in winter.

What constitutes a full rebuild?

Ripping off derailleurs, wheels, bottom bracket, crankset, headset, cleaning frame properly, the cleaning components up and regreasing where required, usually replace the chain just before the summer.

Roady, don't just chuck oil on a dirty chain! you should ideally clean it up first.

So you're after a spreadsheet of the actual weights of a vast range of components?? I've not heard of one. You could create one yourself and make it public so that we could all use it for reference and could add our own weights to it.

Baby wipes and a rag are enough to clean my winter road bike and s/s commuter back to acceptable standards. At the start of spring I might give them a proper clean with water and a sponge.

Summer bike and TT bike remain indoors until the spring.

Please don't compare the riding grudas does to everyone who lives in London.:p

I can't believe how much I have slacked on the cycling since starting my new job. It's actually been ridiculous. So ashamed of myself.

Baby wipes are actually excellent!

This active thread and you guys is what really got me into riding 'properly'. That and Strava's data getting me 'hooked'. Without both it'd still just be a clueless commuter! Can only thank you all for that! ;)

Seems good for what Id want to use it for. Some basic audio with good quality video recording.

I'll take the plastic lug thing off mine for my commute home - I'll then string 2 videos together (last nights & tonights) for an accurate sound comparison. :)

Have you had a chance to compare yourself? Did you notice a difference?

I did this last night (2 recordings of the same part of my commute, one with the 'lug' on the mount, then one without). I totally forgot to bring the pendrive into work with me to upload, so I'll attempt to do it later (around 1.5gb of uploading on my 0.8mbps up DSL :o )

Unfortunately, I had to remove one of my front lights, seriously need more room on my handlebars :D

Anywho, as it seems to becoming the norm round here. I've uploaded my short commute home. Nothing as spectacular as Grudas's commutes through London. I strangely enjoyed watching Roady and Grudas's commutes, so here's mine. :)

Tell me about it, with my VIRB fitted I had to take off my 'backup' light mount (still carry it in my bag). I also got a light I could fit to the front of my frame (below the stem) so I'm still carrying 2 front lights (along with the one on my helmet).

Just watched your commute, which ride on Strava is it? Looks a fairly good one/A road with only a bit of stop-start! Your cadence seems high, but then that's compared to mine - I see you doing 105 cadence at 17 mph, going that fast I'd generally be at 90/95 cadence. My higher cadence is when pushing up a slight incline/stretching legs or at low speeds while accelerating.

I strangely enjoy watching commutes too, I sat and watched 4 of mine last night when deciding which to use for the audio comparison... Waste of an hour  Other peoples are far more interesting! :D

Oh I do, I try to use my chain cleaner every 2 weeks (more like every 3) and I wipe the black road gravy off my chain before lubing. The chain cleaner session is usually combined with a scrub of the cassette/cranks too!

Baby wipes are actually excellent!

Yup, I gave up using old white tea towels (lol), progressed to paper towels and then to baby wipes/face wipes (whichever is cheapest at the local supermarket). Also wipe my frame down with them after washing/scrubbing off the worst of the grime.

What do you guys use for gloves? Just finished my bag of 'plasterers chalk latex' gloves (£1.50 for 10) and on the lookout for some others. Gonna try some of the ones from work (not latex and no chalk) as I can get them super cheap (£6.50 for box of 100). I try to carry a pair in my saddle bag for punctures as quite often my shorts/jerseys are not black (by design...)! :o

EDIT: My Giants now going for it's 'free 6 week' service (got it Dec 19th, oops) and it's done nearly 200 miles since I got it... Average 100 miles a month isn't bad, considering it's Winter, Christmas and I was away on holiday for 1 week! :D It needs a wipe down before I take it as slightly embarrassed (sp?) how grotty it's got since last weekend :o

How come? What's changed?

Changed from starting work at 10 and not having to worry about ironed clothes and suits, to starting work at 8am and having to look smart in an ironed shirt/suit each day.

I'v been here for 4 months now, and we do have facilities, but it's just about being lazy at the moment I think, initially I needed to get into the routine, but that didn't take too long.

I've got my "winter bike" that has been sitting there waiting for me to cut the seatpost since October! Hopefully I can get organised this weekend.

Regarding the cadence, it goes overboard if I don't keep an eye on it. I didn't have room on my handlebars for the Garmin, so stuck it in my back pocket. Having said that; sticking to 100rpm and rising to 115-120rpm on inclines, feels natural to me. I think I do it to compensate a lack of strength, when I started cycling almost 2 years ago I was stupidly under weight, around 53kg.

lol, what is that supposed to mean?

Yup, pretty much.

I actually started to create one and then had a "oh, maybe this has already been made" moment. I'm currently sitting around not in work and not being able to cycle so I've got a fair bit of free time. I'll get some initial data into it and then post it up on here as an editable link.

and you moved right? *still waiting for you to beat my time up the little hill near me*

Yeah, also moved house. I'd have to leave earlier to get to work on the bike than I do on the train, which is actually a rarity in London.

I doubt i'll be beating that time any time soon with my current level of fitness.
