Anyone here entered the Fred Whitton Lake District challenge? 112 miles and 4300 metres of climbing....

http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/

I've entered and after my lard fest over xmas can hardly climb the stairs let alone Lake District mountains !

Other than running training on dark nights do any of you guys ride at nightime in the country side over the winter? Just seems to dangerous to me,...

Can't see how else to get the fitness....

No, I don't like the idea of night riding. Got myself a Turbo Trainer. That could be an option for you?

Personally, I'd look for a cheaper bike to keep at uni and keep it well locked up. Universities are notorious for bikes being stolen.
The Kilmeston is in addition to a Carrera Subway Ltd 2009 I got half price 18 months or so ago, which I will continue using as my run around bike (had also been using it for leisure cycling until now). The only place I will be leaving the Kilmeston is in the gated/fenced/C.C.T.V covered lock up area. It turned out I could get it added to my parents' house insurance for no extra. The total "exposure time" will be limited to 16 weeks (I should graduate in the summer).

The other thing you want is tyres that don't give the bike away. I got some tasty red Michelin Pro 3's for mine, but they do attract atention to what is an otherwise anonymous bike.

Well managed my first ride of the year on Sunday. First time in over 3 months that I'd managed to get out on a road bike (stupid MTB commuting during the Arctic conditions) and I absolutley loved it. I know a large part of it is psychological but the Agree just feels so fast it's unbelievable. Really unstable in cross winds mind!

50 miles along the backroads of Northumberland in the wind and rain. Fantastic. :D

Does anybody have any tips for breaking in a new saddle, other than just simply using it as much as possible? I got a new saddle (a Selle Italia XO Flow) for my exercise bike yesterday, and it has utterly destroyed my sit bones after only 45 minutes of use. I know I'll eventually get used to it, but if there's any suggestions as to what I can do to speed up the process, I'd be much obliged.

MTFU ;)

having said that i don't think there's much you can do - it may be however that you just don't get along with it - 45min once shouldn't be causing you much pain tbh.

I swapped my selle italita gel out for a charge knife as i was getting similar discomfort - the charge is very comfy :)

Funny you should say that, the saddle that was on my exercise bike was a woman's one ;)

I also figured that there wasn't much else I could do other than just use it. The problem with the exercise bike is that you can't get out of the saddle, so you have to spend the entire time seated. The saddle it came with was stupidly wide, causing hip and knee pain, so it had to go. As I'm planning to do some lengthy rides this year, I figured it'd be a good idea to have roughly the same saddle on all my bikes to grow accustomed to it. I shall just have to persevere:)

have you tried using the same saddle as your main bike then (or maybe the steel version as you don't really need the weight saving)? or even swapping it over for the time being...
