im suprised no one has mention anything about the pedals yet :p

i have crap plastic ones on "for now" untill i get used to the bike, then in the new year when it starts getting warmer (or maybe before)i will put my new pedals on

so in the end i bought :

Bike
2 bottle cages
2 Bottles
Pedals
Shoes
2 spare innertubes

Rest i had already :

Garmin GPS with cadence and speed sensors
Bike Pump
Tyre Levers
Sadle Bag

Next thing i need is a Track pump !

Well it weas taken for granted you'd change them as as you said they are a P*S :P

whats the big deal with these? i mean endomondo + heart monitor can do the same on your smartphone?! :o

Battery life, handlebar mounting, weatherproof, full mapping/routing on higher models etc. You can get by with a smartphone. But theres really no substitute for a dedicated device.

There is nothing wrong with using a phone, but I'd rather have a dedicated all-in-one solution for various reasons.

I'm lazy and want turn by turn directions, I want my cadence monitored and I want more accurate measurements/GPS that aren't subject to whether my phone has decent signal. Also, mounting an S3 on the bars would look ridiculous!

I picked up a spare Joe Blow Sport II from Halfrauds for £23 on Monday as they are doing 25% off accessories then got 10% british cycling discount on top.

Edit: Just checked and they've now bumped the price up to £37.99 (£28.49) in basket. Cheeky.

hmm, I also have 10% plus 4.5% cashback if I bought in store, I'll check it out thanks

Managed to bugger my Garmin up already.

Somehow it has got miles and kilometres confused, I can't understand how this can happen.

Went for a ride after work, just over 20km, its logged it incorrectly as 13km. Now 13 miles would be correct. I can't see how when it is using GPS it can get the distance incorrect though!

I had changed a few of the settings, from smart to record to record every second, but that shouldn't have done anything. I'll probably just reset it as it worked properly first time!

After reading online I was able to get the HR strap to fit better and a more accurate HR recording on this ride.

I've got one of these and I can't fault it. It's my second one after losing the first after being hit by a car and if I lose this one, I'll get another.

The only bad thing I can say is that the tyre lever will bend slightly if you put too much leverage on it trying to seat a very tight tyre (I'm looking at you Marathon Plus), but that's possibly by design. I'd rather that than the rim tbh and it's easily bent back using an adjustable wrench or whatever.

I have a mini Allen key set that I bought years ago, any tool in particular ?

One with the most tools on :D
I had one that came with the bike but a month ago I was in Maplins and they were doing a cycle pack for £2.99 with tyre levers (rubbish both broke), puncture kit and a multi tool which is very good.
Otherwise buy a 'name'.

Does anybody here use a mirror?
With being a bit old I don't find it easy to turn around so I was looking at the Bike Eye Mirror which is unobtrusive. http://www.bike-eye.com/

Any recommendations for a cheap helmet? Less than £50, ideally less than £30?

I toyed with the idea of getting a mirror, but I actually find that the act of looking around warns the traffic behind you are looking to pull out, and some of them slow down accordingly.

Unless they are in a BMW or Audi.

I use a mirror. This morning it was vital to check that I looked awesome dressed almost head to to in black and that the pink Prendas cap I was wearing matched my pink Rapha bag cover.

I used various shop windows along my route to confirm that I was still awesome for the whole journey.

I check over my shoulder at regular interval, every 30-60s, to see what's going on around me.
