Road Cycling Essentials

Today was a humbling day in my cycling world. Not only was I left behind by a man on a 30 year old fixie going uphill, I also saw a man with half a leg missing cycling on the way home. If I was lacking an incentive to train harder, I've certainly found it now.

I haven't even made it out on my bike since getting back from thailand, hurt ny hip diving and it hasn't been right since.

There was a new version of MyMaps on the marketplace which I updated to this afternoon; it seems to have resolved the issue with uploading. Uploading to Google Fusion is quite nice; you can manipulate the data in some interesting ways with it, including mapping it on Google Maps, export it to KML etc.

I will take another look at MyTracks again. The problem I had before was that it didn't give me the data I wanted on Google Docs as standard and I had to insert columns and make up formulas myself which was just tedious.

Will give it a gander with this Fusion thingy

Can anyone recommend a Workstand?

I need one for making my life easier working on my bikes.
I kind of realized it's probably about time I bought something.

There are so many options though I don't know what to go for, at the sametime some of them seem to be silly money.

Thanks.

Does that hold it via the frame?
As I've been looking on Wiggle and CRC and so many of them seem like you have to remove a wheel and it doesn't really explain what options they actually have for holding them, which has what has also made deciding harder.

I'm realizing now that the reason many of them don't look like they clamp the frame is more to do with fully carbon bikes getting damaged by the squeezing action.

After my chain breaking issue last week, this is what happened to my rear mech last night:

5 month old Boardman Road Comp, rear mech is mangled thanks to the chain snagging in it. Think I bent the wheel spokes a bit too :(

Sooo, what are my options? There's a lot bent there, think the wheel will be fine, but I get the feeling this is going to really cost me. Any upgrades I could do? I believe it's a Tiagra rear selector.

EDIT: I believe I'm going to need a new Cassette, Chain, Rear Derailleur and it looks like the Rear Derailleur mount is bent too so I would have to get that from Halfords?

I have a Waterproof top from Decathlon that cost me €8. It has so far stood up to some torrential downpours, and kept me almost completely dry.

Platypus, can you tell me about the windproofing and breathability properties of this jacket? Obviously I'm not expecting miracles for a tenner (assuming this is the same jacket), but it would be good to know if it's a complete sweat fest or not.

Otherwise I'm going to go for the £40 Montane FeatherLite Velo.

Thanks.

Dup, sure you can't just bend it all back with the help of an adjustable spanner?

I'm really annoyed with North Face. My Torpedo jacket has been really good but the bottom of the zip broke off, so I need it changed. I went in with my receipt for an exchange, but because it's over 6 weeks old they won't exchange it. They send it back to North Face which will take 2-4 weeks and in the meantime I'm left with no cycling jacket. How pathetic

After getting my wheel bent a few weeks ago (hit by a car, no other damage), i finally got round to ordering a new rim, and decided to upgrade to a nice ceramic Open Pro. Built the new wheel up over the weekend. Defintely feels grippier in the wet :)

I have the same jacket. Breathable it ain't but it keeps the wind and rain out very well. I'm sure it would perform as well as the Montane jacket albeit not quite as packable - up to you if that's worth £30.

Thanks. Packing it up small isn't worth £30 to me, but some iota of breathability certainly is.

Cheek of it!

Rear tyre on the fixie was punctured this morning. I've done maybe 100 miles tops on them? I'm definitely convinced the Michelin Pro 3's on my main hack are made of unpenetronium now :D

Got my first deflation this week (not yet sure if it's a proper puncture) since swapping to Conti 4 seasons almost a year ago.
