Does the bolt spin in the brake caliper? Is that how it's supposed to work? If so, then I can imagine that if I were to hold it in place I could turn the roundy-squarey nut with something and that would bind it in to the recessed nut in the fork. Is that right?

No, the long bolt through the caliper shouldnt turn.

Take it apart again, then thread the toothed washer onto the end of the long bolt through the caliper. That toothed nut might have a slightly curved face on one side to match up with the curve of your fork tube, or it may not.
Next, put the caliper into the hole in the front of your fork and put the long nut (with the flat edges) into the hole on the back to meet it.
You should be able to use an allen key on the end of that nut to tighten it. You might also have a flat edge on the caliper bolt where you can get a spanner on to hold the caliper while you turn the allen bolt at the back (dont turn the spanner, just use it to keep the caliper aligned).

See, this is what puzzled me. The bolt in the brake caliper doesn't go all the way through the fork. It goes into the fork and there is a nut or something literally inside the fork which it is screwing into.

It rather makes me wonder how the brake was fitted in the first place, given what you've said above, as the only way I could get the brake off in the first place was to remove the wheel and detach the brake cable and then literally spin the entire brake caliper around to unscrew it from the captive nut inside the fork. That's the point at which I realised I wasn't going to be able to get the mudguard on as there would be no way I could get the guard in place and then spin the brake caliper back on.

:( :( :(

Unless I use an allen key in the hidden nut to turn that? Though obviously I can't see in there to have figured that out myself!

I've found a page at Sheldon Brown's site which has pictures of how a recessed nut is set up. I guess that might help me out a bit. At least then I could get the brake back on properly, and then worry about why it's not opening up properly. And I could get the mudguards on myself and would only be left worrying about why the brake doesn't work, which I can probably get a mate to help with.

Ah, and I've finally managed to find Tektro's own installation guide. That ought to help.

Just you watch, it'll be the new thing.

Hipsters riding around town on fixies with no brakes adding non-steering stems (all the cool people just lean their bikes over to turn, right?)

Do I score points for having a stuck front brake, such that my wheels don't turn? Which is cooler - a bike that won't stop, or a bike that won't even start?

Good grief, Halfords pricing is a joke. I had a glance on there to check if they'd got any new Boardman bikes in for the new season, and sure enough there's a new bottom end Boardman for £500 with bog standard Shimano 2300 kit on it, an aluminium fork and weighing in at "only 10.9Kg". Of course, they want to push this high cost low end bike, so they've now got the even lower end TdF priced at £600. Meanwhile, anyone with half a brain goes to Decathlon to buy the Triban 3 for £300.

You should be able to turn it with an allen key from the back side of the fork.
It wont unscrew out of the fork (it has a smooth outer and threads on the inside that mate up with the bolt through the caliper).
Spin it round a couple of times with an allen key to loosen it and you should be able to get it out. If you cant get a grip of it from the back, try pushing it with a pen/screwdriver or something through the hole at the front, it shouldnt need much force to come out though.

edit: here is a picture which helps explain things. That long smooth bolt is what goes inside the fork from the rear.

Cheers, I'll have another crack at it tonight. If I'm still stuck then I'll head to an LBS or to Halfords or something.

It's definitely a bit marmite :p I really like it though tbh. Considering it as an alternative to the Canyon SLX.

I've got a canyon cf SLX, I'll post some pictures of it shortly.

Its 2012 but you'll get the idea

PS it looks amazing, its a mountain goat too, though it takes while getting used to it as it isn't amatuer bike so takes while getting used to the ride

Only Epic Cycles seem to be able to get the 675 in the matt black frameset. Tried two of the more specialised LBS's and both confirmed the same thing that the UK distributor is only providing the 675 in red/white and as a complete build w/ Ultegra.

One has them in stock however so going to pop down and give it a test ride tomorrow :)

It's a nice enough looking bike, but is it not hugely expensive for the spec?
most places i can see it have it around 4k and dont even have the cosmics in the picture you posted (ksyriums instead).

An equivalent priced canyon has SRAM Red or new Dura Ace 11-speed groupset and nicer wheels.

Yeah, I'm speccing a custom build w/ Dura Ace 9000 instead and without wheels as I have the DA 9000 C24's already purchased.

Waiting for Epic to get back to me with a quote and one of the local LBS just called me to say they could get a frameset in Matt Black in a month or they could swap the Ultegra out for a DA Groupset for me on the white/red bike in stock. Will go in tomorrow test ride it and get some prices/options.

Also one LBS has just stripped a demo bike covered approx 200 dry miles and they wan't £800 for the complete DA 7900 groupset which looked as new to me. Seems like a decent offer? Cheapest I can see online is £1.1kish from Merlin

Recently started doing some more cycling again, finally putting the bike to more use. Not much, just 20-30 km or so per time. During the week I unfortunately only have time in the afternoon - so damn sweaty with sunshine, humidity and 32-34C temperatures :(

Do you get the warranty on the used set though? Did you check? Also they are selling you 79000 but you want 9000? :p

No 7900 would be for my Ti bike and separate to the DA 9000 Build :p

I doubt it would come with warranty but the fact it's from a local bike store is better than buying of an end user on eBay.
