Road Cycling Essentials

Yup, I've got the Santa run and the Grim 8 next weekend and I can feel a cold breaking. Perfect timing.

Flipping cold this morning. I thought my **** were going to freeze and snap off.

Does anyone use a heart rate monitor? I'm thinking of upgrading my basic comp to one that includes that feature. I've been looking at the Polar CS100, and CS200 models.

Anyone use/used one before?

I really like the idea of it being 100% GPS based, so I can take it off my road bike, put it on my MTB and off I go. So no need for new sensors etc.

Although I'm not bothered about the mapping aspect at all, although I may start planning longer rides which will come in handy.

I assume you can plan a ride on your PC then transfer the directions to the unit?

I keep meaning to do the Grim, looks like a laugh. 8 miles strikes me as short, but I suspect it's not once you hit the course.
I think it looks like amazing fun. 8 miles isn't all that short when you consider the terrain. Most of it is through mud and water, moguls, Alpine section, railway tracks and a path made of logs. I gather there's quite a lot of crawling required as well. Really looking forward to it :D

Looks good! Would love to do something like this. Trained for the other famous one (mind blank) a few years ago but stopped as I couldn't get to the sessions anymore.

Four friends attempted it last year, only one made it up still riding. I don't expect to make it but I'll give it a good go!

Looking forward to having another go this year. I still maintain that I just don't have the gearing for it. The recommended gearing at the back is serrated dinner plate basically and I've only got 11-25 or summit daft like that!

Apex long cage rear can take, according to the guy in Sigma, a 36t on the back (I thought it was only 32 but he corrected me).

That would put me on 32/34 - 90rpm to hit 7.3mph and 240rpm doesn't even bring up 20mph!

I still bought the short cage. I think an Apex and a Force short cage will take 27t on the back.

How exactly do people go about turning when road cycling exactly? What i do is signal for a few seconds, then brake, then turn. It seems i must be doing something wrong because not one but two cars have honked their horns at me as i brake. What do they expect me to do? Take a sharp corner at 20mph?

Honest question, that's a fairly reasonable way to go about cornering isn't it? As i keep saying in this thread, still quite new to road cycling.

Sounds like you are doing it right to me.

Just make sure you are signalling clearly; a lot of folks appear to think that a quick flick of the hand is a turn signal. I sit up and put my arm right out.

Aye i have to admit i made that mistake in my first few days. I now sit right up (not difficult as the bike is too small for me anyway!) and hold my hand right out and count to three slowly, then lower my hand and brake (i lose balance if i brake with one hand off the handlebars)
