It's a pet peeve of mine that the police seem unwilling to pull up a) cyclists without lights and b) non-cyclists stopping in the ASL, makes me rage.

amount of times I wanted to open my door and knock idiots down cycling with no lights....its because of them, drivers think that are cyclist are like this...

Some do but mine is just a two speed so it uses dérailleur gears. I guess the lubrication issue could still apply. I'll ask when I pick up the bike on Friday.

If it runs any sort of freewheel then some wobble on it is pretty normal. It's more apparent on very cheap bikes though.

Easy day at work turned rubbish today as the guy I work alongside got a ball bearing from the headset stuck between the steerer tube and the head tube with the fork out about an inch :( Joy of joys it's a threaded steerer and the ball bearing/rotating of said fork has flattened threads.

/sigh :o

I don't know why he didn't just turn the bike upside down and wriggle the fork when it fell in or how "Lets pull it hard as ****" felt like the best option.

Hey everyone

Posted this in the Big Bike Thread but got directed here :)

So, can anyone recommend a good starter road bike? I don't really want to spend anything over £400 to begin with. I have a mountain bike at the moment but I really want to get out there on the road now, to build fitness as well as to just get out there and enjoy everything that cycling has to offer :)

you can get a basic ribble for little over £550, not sure really what you can get for £400 atm tho as prices seem to have rocketed over the last 3 years!

Got a 2005 Allez Elite with carbon seat post and forks from Gumtree for £250 and it's great. There are some bargains to be had on there and for £400, that's probably where I'd look.

Any particular brands to look out for apart from Specialized in that price range? I'm looking at spending a similar amount on a MTB.

It's more important to find a well-looked after bike rather than any specific brand when buying 2nd hand.

Here are some brands that would be worth a look:
Trek
Giant
Cannondale
Scott
Cube
Felt
Focus

What tyres are people running on there road bikes at the moment? I've got some Schwalbe Ultremo ZX (700C x 23) and had a spectacular rear puncture last night so wondering whether to replace them with something more puncture resistant, even thought the tyres in general are OK.

As I'm pretty new the road cycling the guy I bought the bike off was out cycling with us and helped change the inner tube. Any reason why he wanted to put the chain on the smallest sprocket before removing the wheel?

I'm only asking so I know what to look for :)

As the chain is wrapped around the cassette, you need to slip it off the cassette before you can get the wheel out. By putting the chain into the smallest sprocket (ie: the one nearest the end of the cassette), it's easier to slip the chain off and get the wheel out.

Also, i'v not had much luck with tyres recently, so i dont have any specific tyre to suggest here. Just that 700x23 is a narrow tyre. Good for going fast and racing, but not as comfortable. I recently switched from 23 to 25 on my bike and the 25s are so much more comfortable on rough roads.

Anybody want some free bike cleaning stuff?

Go and follow Team NetApp on facebook.
They are doing a Q+A with their team mechanic and the best questions win a prize.
There's currently only 2 questions, after 2 hours.

i won some powerbar stuff on the one they did last week. They had 3 prizes to give out and only 6 questions submitted :p

Quick non-road cycling related one for our resident restoration expert Jonny69 or others in the know.

I'm restoring a MK2 chopper at the moment.

Do you know a good place to get the odd Raleigh nut and other little bits I may need?

Also what have you found works best on pitted rusty chrome? At the moment I'm using medium grade wire wool with brasso but I'm sure there's better stuff that I could be using.

Not sure whether to go ahead with a frame respray yet; going to make a call on that once the bike is a bit shinier.
