Road Cycling Essentials

I'd figure that was down to the copper not knowing what he's doing.

London City Police regularly set up at lights just to pull cyclists. Mind if you jump a red you are dumb and if you do it whilst there is a bunch of rozzers standing about then you get everything you deserve.

Red light is FPN but speeding cant be ticketed except in certain parks - pretty confident no one has been ticketed for peddling furiously despite the urban legends.

Not sure I should even try and open this can of worms but are there any cases where it is safe for cyclists to disobey a red light?

Bear in mind traffic lights were never designed with cyclists in mind to begin with. It's also legal in Paris:

How about when turning left and within a red cycle lane? Or during a pedestrian crossing phase when no pedestrians are close?

Or what about going straight on through a cycle lane here is an example of one near me that I regularly see people run:

No as its against the road traffic act and you cant have one rule for cars/motorbikes and another for cycles.

Should there be different rules for cyclists at red lights? Quite possibly.

So does that mean I can do 25mph in a 20mph zones on the road without worrying about being pulled? As unlikely as it is to happen, it's nice to know exactly what the rules are.

It depends what roads you are on.
The '20mph' zone applies to motor vehicles. A bike is not a motor vehicle, but there are other offences like "furious cycling" which could theoretically be used.

Some roads around London have bylaws which explicitly state a speed limit for bicycles.

Didn't Millar do a TT around Richmond Park at 20mph above the speed limit or something silly? The video was pulled by the magazine who set it up at the request of Royal Parks but no charges were ever made despite the obvious video evidence.

I've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to get a damned rear reflector off this new bike. The guy at Halfords must have put it on with a drill or something. Any tips for loosening it (plastic reflector on metal seat tube, metal screw).

Are you too cool for rear reflectors?

I see, thanks. There is quite a long stretch of road on my way to work that has gone from a 30 to a 20 mph limit, and I actually find it's safer to go at the same pace as the cars who tend to ignore the speed limit. :o

Worrying about those carbon frames, some of them just went 'pop'! At least metal frames tear and bend slowly (I think) (hope).

Also, I've made my JustGiving page, am doing a 300ish mile coast to coast in September, now, do I brave GD to get maximum coverage? -gulp-

Due to the short tube height I can't fit the Topeak saddle bag on with the reflector there so I need to move it onto the back of the bag. And yes, I think reflectors are pointless if you have lights.

Also, still no luck with WD40. I'm this close <--> to just getting a hack saw to it.

Try taking the seatpost out, greasing it up and slide the reflector off the bottom. Might need to warm up the plastic a bit first with a hairdryer or blowtorch or something.

Yeah I did take the post off to do that but it's covered in grease (brown?) and I don't have anything to replace it. I guess as long as the reflector clasp scoops it all up I could reapply it off that.

Can anyone recommend a puncture repair kit suitable for high psi? I bought some self sticking ones and they are rubbish, even when I use the old school sandpaper, glue chalk and patch they still don't stick.
