I replaced my cassette today for the first time and the locking nut said 40nm which sounds like a lot so I just cranked it up as tight as I could(ish). Will see in the morning if its ok!

How far did you strip it down?
So that it looks like this?

If you only took the cassette off and didnt remove the freehub (same as the image above) then you wont have broken the freewheel, so it's most likely to be out of alignment. Check that you put all of the spacers back on and in the correct order.

Yeah, just like in that image. Didn't touch the freehub other than to wipe some of the crap off of the surface of it after the cassette was off.

It's a shimano Tiagra 10 speed cassette. When i removed it, there is one main piece but the smallest 3 rings are actually seperate and had a single plastic spacer in there as well.

Pretty sure the order of things when i removed it would have been from back to front:
Main cassette->plastic spacer->3rd smallest ring->2nd smallest ring->smallest ring->lockring

Wonder if i've maybe put the plastic spacer the wrong way around or something.

Ok, quick question for those of you more knowledgeable on bike maintenance than i.

Recently took the cassette off my bike to clean it. Used a chain whip and the correct cassette lock ring remover, got it off no problem, cleaned it up, stuck it back on.

Now, cut today and i take the bike out for a ride. I'm finding that any time i stop pedaling and freewheel for a bit, when i next try to engage the pedals it's like the cassette doesn't catch for a bit. The pedals just spin for a few rotations without the cassette engaging, then suddenly it'll catch and everything will be fine again.

I'm pretty sure i've made some stupid schoolboy error here. So what have i done wrong? Have i just not attached the cassette tightly enough?

If it's only doing it on the smallest cog then your locknut's loose and the cog is spinning off the end of the freehub. If not then there's something up with the freehub itself.

Ok, cool. Will get the wheel off and take a closer look at it tomorrow.

This is what the cassette looks like when dismantled:

So putting it back together, it's kind of hard to get wrong. Plastic spacer on top of main cassette, then the 3 rings in order of size and lockring on last.

I suspect it's as you say, and i haven't tightened it up properly.

Brilliant cake! Happy birthday :)

ETA: I came on here to mention another sufferfest - second this week. Still struggling on this new FTP and I don't think the wine from last night helped:

Tip for anyone with a garmin soft strap HR monitor - you can swap the strap for a polar soft strap and use the garmin connector, it's miles more accurate and doesn't have problems with synthetic clothing like the gramin seems to!

no idea which one i got but it came with my garmin and works brilliantly, i dont feel the need to change?

Spent part of the day giving the bike an overdue clean. Ready for it to get dirty again tomorrow.

Good luck and have fun to all who are doing the Jodrell Bank ride tomorrow.

Yep, good luck everyone. If anyone sees a guy on a black/white specialized bike wearing this jersey (in black) over a long sleeved fluorescent one then say hi :)

Late night birthday money spending spree... Just ordered the following:

- Repair stand
- Ice Toolz Essence tool kit
- New wheels (handbuilt Mavic Open Sport Rim/Tiagra hub from ebay)
- Michelin Lithion 2 tyres
- Zinn road bike book
- Topeak Hexus II multi tool for on the road
- And a bottle and some drink sachets!

I've a bit left over, so I might look at picking up some clothes at Decathlon, or doing some repairs, replacing a sticky gear cable and whatnot.

What stand and is it the new version of the Zinn book?

Happy belated birthday!

I ordered the top DHB bib shorts last night, they are on offer at £60 so thought i would give them a go as im finding the cheap DHB ones are fine for 30miles but more than that and i start to feel bum hurt - doesnt last when off bike so think a better pad will solve it!

dhb Aeron Pro ?
the pad is really really thick!
thats why i got them too, for long distance riding

Is my pump broken?

I just took it off the bike, and it was working fine, just thought id try the new side mount bracket i got from Topeak UK and when i took it out of the bracket and extended the bezel it came off

Yeah, i already have a few std ones they do - will keep them for commutes and build up a few pairs of better ones for longer rides.

I was thinking of going for some Castelli or Assos but for £60 thought the Aeron Pros had to be worth a punt esp as its car silly season shortly with 2 mots and insurance etc....

I got a set of Assos bibs at Xmas from Evans, vat free and £20 off. Ended up paying £75 for a pair which was decent. Well worth the money, at twice the price not so sure.

Ordered a few misc bits and bobs, inc a Castelli Gillet from CRC, reduced down to about 40 quid. Hope the size is ok, ordered a large which according to the guide should be ok, but heard they can come up small.

Im medium in DHB and Large in Castelli as a rough guide, Castelli stuff is smaller but not as much as i thought it would be from online reports!

Yeah, i found the same. I'm a small in DHB stuff, but got some Castelli full length bibs and a top recently in Medium and it fits perfectly.

The Castelli is great quality, but i wouldn't pay full price for it. Sure, the finishing is lovely, but in terms of usability i find the pads about the same as what i have in my dhb roubaix kit at a third of the price.

Need to try some of the Decathlon stuff for spares, as i've heard a few folk say on here the quality is actually decent.

Apologies for the essay:

Looking for some advice on getting fitter, faster and if anyone has or has thought about incorporating HIIT into their commute at all. I'm not convinced me riding at 60-70% for longer is going to make me much fitter or faster any time soon to be honest!

My main goal is to be fitter, much fitter in fact, but also to lose body fat. Which I guess both come hand in hand!!

I cycle on average 22mi a day 4 days a week (11mi each trip) on my commute and I was wondering if and how I could incorporate some HIIT into that or even if it is a good idea?

I'd like to be able to maintain a higher average speed, currently I average around 16.5mph when I'm pushing myself to 90%, but also would like to be much quicker up hills (small or large).

I struggle at the moment with climbing out of my saddle - I can maintain it for about 10secs max before my legs turn to jelly and I have to sit back down!!

Well done if you read this far! :)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how/what I can do to get fitter faster?

I finished my latest build its a total franken bike (even has sram rear mech / shimano front mech :-)) it's going to be my commuter so isn't the prettiest thing as parts were bought as they were a bargain not becuase they matched :) but it totally wins on the performance/cost ratio.

It comes out at under UCI weight (6.74kg) fully complete (only my mudguards missing) without really trying, my barends, brake levers and stem are made of pig iron and the seat aint the lightest. Total cost is probably about £750, dread to think how much an off the peg bike at the same weight would cost.

Wheels, frame, fork, headset = £520
Everything else, bar the tyres, chain and cables was second hand off ebay or bike radar forum.

Shifters = Sram double tap
F/M = Shimano 6600
R/M = Rival
Crank = Shimano 6700
Callipers = Sram Force
Levels = Shimano R550

Some pics before the mudguards go on (oh and I like a flatbar with long barends for commuting... deal with it ;-p).
