Ha, I was expecting 2-3 weeks time when I could plan to have the money saved to purchase them!

Are there any good deals about that you know of for chain whips and cassette lock ring tools? It even might be worth me buying a cycle tool kit rather than keep buying individual tools as and when i need them.

Would I need anything to lube where the casssette locks onto the rear wheel?

Conti GP 4000S still the tyres of choice for eveyone?

What groupset / cassette are you using?

I don't lube around my lock ring.

Got a bike fit in 30 mins. Looking forward to the outcome :)

Don't be such a tease Russ. Where are you going and which level of fit did you choose!? I bailed on mine after a friend talked me out of it. As both my bikes fit for the most part well and I don't have any pains so figured I could do some fettling myself.

Let us know how you got on might persuade me to rebook it.

In other news my R5 is booked back in to the workshop next week to get it's steerer cut and stem slammed & the proper Cervelo headset fitted omnomnom :)

Edge users, what do you do for maps? Custom/Official/Don't bother?

I have the Navigator maps. They're ridiculously slow on the card the 800 shipped with. I now use OS Maps someone linked to on here from a dutch site a while ago (will find links)(on a faster card) that I find are better than the other ones that regularly get recommended on other forums & here.

All the OS Maps are basically the same w/ the main differences how up to date they are and the routing algo's. The .nl ones I find are the perfect balance between cycle paths and main roads.

Edit:

These are the ones most people recommend: http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm#GPSRs-Only
These are the ones I prefer: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

You can load multiple maps at the same time and choose which are enabled/disabled. You only need to reroute after disabling/enabling a map for it to change so try them both and see how you get on.

I found it makes a big difference going from the 4GB Class 4 to a Class 10 mSD I don't experience the same map refresh lag that I did. However the Navigator maps if yours comes with official ones only authenticates on the 4GB card.

I thought i had my bikes set up perfectly before i went for my fit. I never had any pain or other problems on the bike. One of my mates went on the trek pro-fit training course and wanted to practice, so i let him try to fit me on the basis that:
1 - We take all the measurements of my bike before we start
2- he wont be offended if i put it all back to how it was after we finished

I was hugely sceptical at first, he put my seat down by about 4cm, which is quite a lot. It felt terrible, but he persuaded me to ride it like that for a week...

..it's now still at that height over a year later and i feel much more powerful than i did before.

is that all he adjusted?

Nope, but that was the biggest difference.
He also made small changes to the height and angle of my bars, moved my cleats and slid the saddle forward on the rails slightly.

It took about 30 mins of measuring me before anything was changed on my bike.
Overall, i was there for over 2 hours. But, as i said, it was one of my mates doing it, so we spent a lot of time talking rubbish, etc.

Same with the OS maps. Most annoying you can't move them to a bigger / faster card.

I appreciate there's a need to protect the maps, but I can move OS maps around on ViewRanger on my phone. Moving from my old Nokia E66 to a Nexus 4 was no hassle with ViewRanger.

You could go for the Ice Toolz essence tool kit, which you can get for about £40. That's got pretty much every tool you'll need, with the exception of cable cutters. I recently did the exact same job as you, using the tools in the kit. I did have to borrow a mallet from my neighbour to turn the lock ring, though, as it was jammed so tight

@von your sig has been b0rked forever and Movember was an age ago :p

IceToolz Essence kit is £35 @ Spacycles and if you have a Cyclesurgery anywhere near you, you could pop in and get it price matched in store :) Otherwise it bounces between £37-£42 range on Amazon.

I'm sure everyone could benefit from a bikefit but my current view is it's going to be most useful if you either experience regular pains/discomfort when riding or if you wan't to take your cycling to the next level and start getting competitive. I'm not really in either camp but I haven't ruled it out.

Looking forward to hearing Russ's experience and also planning to interrogate Andy from BikeScience at Bespoked Bristol on the weekend to see if he can sway it for me.

The Zinn 4th Ed book is dangerous (in a good way) makes me feel like I could strip my R5 and rebuild it. But judging my past history of taking things apart as a kid and them never going back together I know it's probably not a good idea :p

Otherwise some really good information and supporting diagrams and seems to pretty much cover everything.

Ok guys need some advice.

Accidently just purchased some Planet X AL30s Wheels (Shimano/Black) only called them up as they were displaying out of stock and to see when stock was likely expecting 2-3 weeks. The sales guy then told me they were actually in stock but had tubes and tyres on them but said he would throw in the tubes and tyres for no extra cost, so couldnt really turn them down!

They are being delivered tomorrow, so need to work out how big of a job and what tools I will need to fit my rear cassette or is it worth just getting my LBS to fit it?

Been waiting for them to come in stock for a while  Did they only have 1 pair in stock?

@uniQ

Went to BW Cycles. Was good, but it is expensive if you're both a) well fitted already with no pains and b) know a fair amount about cycling etc. I could only tick both of those half-heartedly so it was useful.

It was with Oli and to have a fitting by a 5 time world champion and 3 time Olympic athlete for £80 is pretty good going. He obviously knows his stuff. Similarly Mud Dock charge £120 and I think Bike Science charge £200+.

I was with him for an hour and a half overall, a lot of which was learning about muscle groups, how I ride, how to ride, etc. In all my seat was moved up and back and I bought and had fitted a shorter stem (110 to 90). This was done by recording me ride with dots on my joints and measuring angles etc.

It is a lot for the "end product" but you'd never get the end product without it. A lot of it was explaining why those were moved etc and what I could change in the future as time goes on.

Thanks for the feedback Oli's certainly qualified w/ those credentials & a lot of people I know have been going there recently so they're clearly doing something right.

You'll know after a few rides or that sportive on the weekend if it was worthwhile. I do like that you get your setup printed so you can translate it to future bikes too.

I'm really interested in the VO2 fitness test BW does as well.

BTW that's where BRC meet for the Tue & Sat group rides. Although Tue are "Chaingang Tue" and go at a pretty serious pace not for the faint of heart.

I called them up and the sales said they were in stock in black/shimano but were showing as having tyres and tubes on them he then spoke to the purchasing department. After this he said he would sell me them for the same price £149.99 and throw in the tubes and tyres for free - great customer service! I'd call them up and see if you can get the same deal.

I've borrowed a chain whip and lock ring tonight, wheels ae getting delivered tomorrow so hopefully can have then on my bike soon :D
