There's 20% off dhb stuff when you spend £50 making the pro shorts £50 ish. I picked some up last week and they seem good thus far.

Just go for any popular sportife.
Have a look on sientries, they tend to have big sportifes.

If you do a sportive with 500-600 other riders, you wont notice if the roads are open or not. Most cars will avoid the route and others will get held up by riders behind you. Chances are no cars will come past you for the entire event. The only difference between open and closed road events is that you need to stay on your own side of the road and take a bit more care at junctions.

*I'v only done a couple of sportifs in remote locations on the west of scotland and around the lake district, so it may be slightly different in busier areas.

Etape Hibernia is now Etape Caledonia. There's also Etapes Pennines and Mercia on closed roads I believe.

Was Etape Hibernia not the Irish one that doesn't exist any more?

I thought the Etape Caledonia up in Perth had always been called that. I'm doing it this year - heard great things about it.

Young lad that is a student of one of the guys riding made this last night. Wish I wasn't put off by the wind to go up and take part even in the slowest of the slow groups :(

Ha, excellent. A group of the EK guys just went past me a couple of hours or so ago as well, going the opposite direction on Muttonhole Rd above Hamilton.

There is a club run tonight so maybe a few guys heading back in the road from that.

Ruari is some lad, so confident for his age. He had his Felt F4 stolen and broke his foot in the same week. Lucky to have a replacement team coloured F4 now but can't ride it for a few weeks.

Are you in any sort of club then mate?

Does anyone know what the actual offence/maximum fine is for cycling through a red light or down a one way street the wrong way? Ignoring any evidence requirement etc.

yeah afaik its 30 for pretty much everything cycling related.. i have a few warnings from my bmxing days for riding on pathways on one wheel lol..

my mate got a 30 fine which is the max ive seen

There's that video that someone recorded where the say they don't want to accept any paperwork at the moment. What happens then? Can they legally request for your details and address? Because in the video it seemed not but the policeman might have just been an ejit.

The law is a bit vague, unfortunately. As was shown in the last thread in GD, there is no definition of the bicycle as a vehicle in the Road Traffic Act and as such you could (and apparently people have successfully appealed as such) that the law doesn't apply to bikes.

Unfortunately some people interpret this as carte blanche to do what they like.

On the spot it's a minimum £30 FPN.

Edit: I believe you could alternatively receive a summons if what you did was 'dangerous'.

No, I've never joined a club. Just got my first road bike last June having only done the occasional ride on my old hybrid in the year prior to that. That was about a month after we moved to Hamilton. Have been contemplating whether to hook up with one of the local clubs for a while now.

I'm guessing EK and the Royal Albert down in Larkhall are the two closest ones? I met a couple of the RA guys a few months back on one of my regular routes, and did 30k or so with them. They seemed decent guys.

Are you in a club yourself?

I'm not but as we sponsor EKRC I might as well be in it since I know most of the guys. They do a Sunday run with a cake stop in Strathaven which is slower pace, club run on Wednesday evening at 6.15pm now it's light again. The APR night is twice a month I think from the Sandford hall.

Saturday morning is when different guys meet at the Calderglen bus stop at 9.30am and 10am. 10am being for the fastest guys. They do around 55 miles round through Murikirk, Douglas, Lesmahagow and back to Strathaven.

There is also St Christophers who arrange the 10 miles time trial that is on a Tuesday night and all are welcome just bring a quid or so. Leaves from the Sainsburys depot and loops up to Auldhouse, across to the Strathaven road and back in again.

Cool - i might pop along one sunday and introduce myself. Are they ok with randoms just turning up for the ride, or should i contact someone in advance?

Sounds like they go round all the usual places i ride to most weeks already, so at least i'll know the way! :D I'm well acquainted with that awful road surface into and out of Muirkirk! *shudders*

That road is closed for widening the now so the Saturday runs going a different route for now.

Best thing to do is get on the mighty blue train facebook page and introduce yourself and go from there.

Morrisons at Lindsayfield is where that goes from on a Sunday.
