Make sure that whatever you buy has a 2-bolt fitting for SPD cleats and not the 3-bolt fitting. Now that you've chosen SPD, i cant see any reason not to buy recessed shoes. The tread patterns wont have any effect on the pedal/shoe interface so it makes sense to just get something you can walk in. Non-recessed shoes are used for SPD-SL cleats because the cleat is much bigger (wider than the shoe itself, actually) so it wont fit with any tread on the shoe.
Cheers for that. The only thing with the recessed cleat shoes I saw is they're a bit clunky and they were quite thick and padded. My worry is I'm going to get really hot feet in them. Like the shorts I was trying on, there seemed to be a choice of either clunky recessed cleat shoes or super-streamlined exposed cleat shoes but nothing in between.

Dont do it!
Just get bibshorts, they are so much better.
I've really got no use for bibs and I like (and use) the convenience of conventional shorts.

The only difference between recessed and non-recessed is the sole which won't make much of a difference if at all to the temperature of your feet.

Have you looked at something like a touring shoe? Recessed SPDs, but not quite as chunky looking as some of the mountain bike ones:

I have these and they've been really solid, and look more like a regular road shoe.

Not sure if they still are, but Decathlon were stocking them at similar price to Wiggle as well if you wanted to go try them on.

how long should spokes last on a 2012 Defy 2?

I've had 3 go on me in the last month or so. 2 weeks today i do my charity ride and it needs to be more reliable than that to do 280miles in 24hrs!

Short one for me this morning. I took care of a cat 3 that I've not made it over in full before - I've done bits of it, and walked up it once, but this was the first time doing it all in one go without getting off. It poured down for about 20 minutes from the time I got to the top of the cat 3 to about 15 minutes from home so I got absolutely drenched. I could have sat in a bath in a wind tunnel and it would have been more clement. I got home and my 4 year old asked why I hadn't put my waterproof jacket on. I might have done, if I hadn't been racing two guys at the time :D As I turned onto the cat 3 climb, two guys started following me. One on an Orbea and one on a Giant - both much nicer than my TdF anyway! I figured they'd take me, no bother. Orbea passed me without much bother, but Giant followed me up and I got a bit of a gap. They caught me on the descent on the other side as the rain started, but I pulled back the gap on the flat. I turned onto the next climb, heading towards home, and they both stormed past me, and I figured it was game over, but while Orbea made it to the top easily enough, Giant was flagging, so I passed him before he got to the top :D Slow and steady sometimes does win the race!

I think the Orbea must be the +1 on my Strava ride. I'm guessing it was him rather than the Giant, given he only got one PR on his whole ride.

I've ridden from the centre of Newcastle out to South Shields following the Sustrans route and it's all perfectly ok for a road bike, being on either dedicated paths or quiet roads. There wasn't any dirt tracks.

Likewise if you head the other way out past Newburn the paths are all fine for a road bike or become quiet roads. It also takes you nicely out towards Corbridge and the Tyne valley area which is very nice for cycling. I often do Heaton to Hexham and back which is a really nice route about 54 miles, but obviously could shorten it to Bywell or Corbridge for something shorter. There's lots of excellent cycling either direct from Newcastle or short drives

Really didn't wan't to get out of bed today. Wet & windy don't even come close to describing it. But needs must...

Good work. I made it to 10 hours; happy enough with that.

Good effort and earlier today. I remember when you first got that bike off of your neighbour and were walking most hills. Now look at ya :)

Time challenges are the worst, this is the first I finished as they just encourage me to either ride really far or really slowly and something always comes up that stops me from completing it. Looking forward to the climbing challenge though, especially as I move in one week and will be neighbours with Russinating (bet he's stoked about that :D) and also much closer to Belmont hill which is perfect for hill reps :)

yea that was that I linked but without dropped handle bars.
anyway I still have a few weeks to decide.

any of you newcastle folk that have used edinburgh cycles in Byker before can tell me wether they would offer me solid advice and customer service or try to sell me something I don't want for easy profit?

They give excellent advice when I've been there and set up 8 bikes for me height wise etc for me last week. I've bought 1 bike there before and I'm going to buy 1 later today as its 15% off this weekend. It's a coop so they don't work on commission so I think they give pretty good advice. Certainly the guy I have spoken to before called Gordon was excellent
