did I read recently about winter gear?

well,

last winter was my first one, so I had to build on my summer gear as the winter progressed

currently for the extreme temperatures I wear :

Merino wool socks
road shoes still
THICK overshoes (8mm I think) not water proof though
didn't get my bib shorts until this summer so,
MTB shorts
leg warmers
base layer (only got a dry layer, which includes legs)
ss Jersey
ss Jersey
soft shell long sleeve Jersey
warm hat (under helmet)
mitts + windproof gloves + ski gloves

One of the plusses of running normal SPDs on my road bike is I can use my winter MTB boots which are an older version of these. Add a pair of SealSkinz merino and you have toasty warm, dry feet :)

Got it, only the pickup photo so far as I've been mega busy this eve.

The bikefit was an interesting experience, learnt quite a bit about my shortfalls and general condition - left with some exercises to improve certain areas.

Without further ado

Fast and so far very comfortable to ride! :)

EBC sale is always worth a look to pick a bargain up at. Just a pity they always list their sale items like that in a big long typed list. Suppose its the easiest way to do it for them but it hurts my eyes reading through the stuff on offer and then having to go on their site and track it down to see what it is. :D

I managed to get out for a quick jaunt this evening and found a good cat 4 near me. 1 mile at 6.5%. Makes a change from the usual 0.1 mile at 83%.

Getting so dark now. I was back before 9 and the light was as good as gone. Going to have to dig out my hi vis stuff and lights and whatnot.

Err... Most of their bikes have CANYON written three or four times on each side...

I have noticed this too, and not just with canyon! Just yesterday i saw a cannondale with "CANNONDALE" written on it. Something really should be done to stop manufacturers from writing their name on their bikes.

To be fair, canyon have taken it a bit too far....

...the 'gloss black decals on matt black frame' colour scheme they use really is a step too far! :D

Re: the winter discussion.

What do people do for headwear? I have a buff which can be worn bandana style but I was looking for something else for when it's colder.

Skull cap? Belgian style hat? Windproof or just thermal fabric? Covering ears is a must!

@Asprilla - Are the Giro merino hats good? Does it fit under a helmet? Can't seem to get a black in size small at the moment.

Well I've written to my MP about the state of roads and road repairs in Cambridge, for all the good it will do it certainly made me feel better.

I love my Giro merino caps. I've got two and was thinking about getting another this year.

They fit under a helmet absolutely fine. I wear a cap under my helmet all summer anyway so it feels the same to me.

I've got an Altura skull cap (Cycling Weakly freebie) and a Gore Windstopper skull cap and I prefer wearing the Giro ones as they breath better.

I've got an Altura windproof headband that seems to keep my ears relatively warm. Wouldn't mind this though if they do a non-Sky version: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/team-sky/2013-winter-hat-by-rapha-ec047286

For winter I need to grab some new overshoes, a new softshell ans something made of merino as everyone seems to love it.
It's comfortable, insulates extremely well and stinks less. What's not to like?

I usually wear a cycling cap (have a number of vintage TdF ones, and a few Rapha ones) and then either a buff or winter scarf to cover as much of my face as I can, including my ears.

E: I've been considering the winter hat as well. They do do a non Sky one, it hasn't been in stock all year but I assume they only produce them as winter comes on so we might see them soon. Oh and if people think Rapha is expensive (it is) try this!

The Castelli Skullys are very highly rated. Might go for one of those.
