Road Cycling Essentials

Hi Guys,

I've just started commuting (20 mile round trip) on my bike (TDF Carrera) and I wondered if anyone can offer any suggestions on winter base layers as the weather has started getting a bit chilly and want to be prepared. I currently wear short sleeve Nike Pro Combat Dri Fit Compression tops with either a short or long sleeve sports direct cheapo jersey which I find comfortable but they don't quite cut it when the temp drops below 10C. My shift pattern means that I'm cycling for about 2/3 of the time between 11pm-6am, especially after a night shift my body temp is already pretty low so feel the cold a lot more.

I was looking at buying some of the long sleeve Nike Hyperwarm series but it looks like they are discontinued and trying to find my size is like looking for rocking horse poo. Can anyone recommend a decent alternative in the £20 - £40 price range?

Thanks
B

Slightly outside your price range I know but take a look at Icebreaker. I've got a few long sleeved and one short sleeved "Everyday Merino" from Cotswolds great outdoors I think, the long sleeved where £55. Although in fact they are on sale now and an extremely good price. Really can't recommend them enough!

I have several of the short sleeved versions of Planet-X's merino baselayer which I wear under my softshell jacket. I like them a lot; in fact I quite often wear them on their own as a normal t-shirt. As Shamrock says, you're probably going to need a warmer outer layer when the temperatures are in single digits.

Go Outdoors have some SmartWool bits on offer at the moment - assorted options for £20 to £35. I've got a couple of the long sleeve zip tops and they get abused all winter for running and biking. They probably get washed about once every two or three months

When it gets below 10C don't you start wearing an insulating outer layer rather than just relying on a warm base layer + jersey?

I swap arm warmers for long sleeves at 10c.

As things get close to freezing I might put on a winter jersey.

At freezing I can put on my soft shell.

You lot need to be more spinny to generate heat.

Sounds like you need to come on the CS7 and see how spinny I am!:p

I get turn prompts PRIOR to the turning rather than when you are on top of it by using ridewithgps, take out any left/right/straight on cue sheet entries i dont want then export it to my PC as a TCX.
Then in bikeroutetoaster import the TCX and export it as a TCX with a turn warning set (i set turn warning distance to 300ft). It bleeps as a turn warning so you know you have to turn (it bleeps again usually when you've made the turn!).
Note that you can just leave it on your normal speed/time/distance/whatever screen and the turn prompts come up with an accompanying bleep.

So I think I can also do this with my Forerunner 310. I've just plotted a route on ridewithgps but do I have to be a premium member to export as a TCX file?

Pfff I spin fast.

Although if my garmin is to be believed I don't spin at all on a 100 mile cycle apart from the odd burst of 2 revolutions per minute.

I've been feeling the cold ever since I lost 75kg a couple of years ago, but reducing my calorie intake always makes it worse. I am 77kg at the moment, and I'm aiming to get down to 70kg. I can't face being seen as one of those "all the gear, no idea" types when I'm out on my new bike, and I am sure it'll help my climbing ability as well.

You lost 75kg!!!?

I lost 30kg over a 2 year period. I'm still around 78kg at the moment and want to get to 70kg eventually. Previously I used aggressive calorie deficits to cut weight but training a lot it just doesn't work. Recently read a good book about Matt Fitzgerald called racing weight which has some great ideas about how to cut weight while training. It's all about the quality of food consumed, and it seems to be working.

Need to get shot of the average tyres (Schwalbe Lugano 23mm) that came on my Cannondale CAAD8. Seem quite skittish and not particularly grippy.

Looking around Continental Grand Prix 4 Season (GP4000s) seem to be well rated for general riding etc - Any better options? Also thinking going for 25mm ones this time.

Any thoughts?

Pouring down outside, definitely lights weather now. Fitted my Hope vision to my frame and lined it up. Rather wishing I hadn't looked straight at it whilst connecting the battery..

Shame you have to pay for future forecasts on it, although you can extrapolate a bit.

Most of the other sites like BBC weather and MetOffice are turd.

True.

BBC is diabolical. You think that it is accurate because it splits the forecast down into 1hr slots. But no. On Thursday last week it had forecast that a good 90% of the time on Friday and Saturday would be rain in Leek. In reality there was a bit on Friday day, loads at night, then the whole of Saturday was dry.

So from a forecast of every hour of Saturday to be rainy, to nothing... pahh. I get that it is a prediction but whaaa?

Yes. My Planet-X came with Luganos and they got ditched after getting two punctures on my first long ride (Liverpool > Chester > Liverpool). They are still hanging in the garage...

I replaced them with Conti GP 4 Seasons (note the GP4000s is a different tyre altogether). Very happy with them. Can't remember when I got them (maybe 3 years ago) but I've had one puncture with them which was this year (which isn't bad in 1200km). That was a pinch puncture after a short off-road section back in July.

Just looked out of the office window and can't see a cloud in the sky. It's about 25c out there today. Maybe 30c tomorrow.

Pity I don't have a bike here. :(
