How do you do that exactly?

Going out for an hour and ride at FTP to 105% of FTP?
Going out for a couple of hours ride at 90/95% of FTP?

Yeah pretty much, confidence in your FTP is quite important though. For an hour if it's balls to the wall it would be 100% of FTP as that's essentially the definition. I have a book which outlines what power most people can expect to manage for x period of time. If you do get a power meter it's a must have (training and racing with a power meter - hunter Allen and Andrew coggan).

Its not just that though, it's being able to quantify improvements exactly, not just guesswork and average speed which is quite unique, quadrant analysis of pedaling cadence and force, and knowing when and how long recover after big rides.

Being able to compare yourself to other known quantities is quite entertaining too!

Thanks, interesting!

Went out on the local club run, only for the second time today, had a great ride, although suffered a bit on the way back, took quite a few turns on the front on the way out only to encounter some hills and struggle for a few miles in the middle. By far the fastest ride I've ever done, makes up for my lack of action this week.

Only downside is the group had an accident earlier with someone going down, really took a lot of skin off their hands because they weren't wearing any gloves. So remember guys get those gloves on every time you go out! I also leant my gloves to the lad that went down, who went home separately so no idea when i'll get them back!

ive yet to see an accident on a club run or not

I see a lot of pro teams without wearing gloves whilst watching the Tour of Britain

Done 70mi this morning. Now going to watch the final ToB stage in Central London. I expect I probably won't be able to get near enough to even see anything but at least I can soak up some atmosphere!

Taking advantage of what might be the last sunny day, I have finally managed to teach my 7yo daughter to turn 180 degrees in the road on her bike. I missed her first successful turn, though, as I was busy reprimanding my 4yo daughter for literally smashing her helmet against the pavement over and over. FFS.

It was a bit unlucky by the sounds of things as I was at the front, but we came around a blind corner and a horse was on the other side which people braked for and one person went into someone at the back and went down, obviously straight on his hands. Few others behind came off, but only minor grazing.

Hi guys, I'm after a little advice.

I used to ride for Team Specialized waaay back for their XC mountain biking team but haven't done any riding in quite a few years.

I decided I wanted to get into road biking as having moved to Florida, there aren't a lot of great mountains around! I bought a new Trek Madone 6.2 a little over a week ago and am very happy with it but I'm certain I want to start competing in triathlons this coming year.

Basically, my decision is this - I have a week window in which I can exchange my Madone 6.2 for a TT bike and not lose anything which would allow a fairly cheap upgrade into a Speed Concept. I do ride with other people quite often and enjoy going on slower rides with my wife too but don't really want to have two bikes.

Should I buy the Speed Concept and use that as my only bike or should I stick with the Madone 6.2 and use that for the triathlons as well?

Thanks :)

I can't imagine just having a TT bike. Unless you're Fabian Cancellara then riding 100+ miles in TT position is not going to be comfortable. I'd get the Madone and clip on aerobars.

Finished overhauling the Ti cockpit (seatpost todo)

New fork, stem, bars, headset, bar tape, bottle cages, chainring, gear & brake cables, removal of barrel adjusters, new tyres, and de-stickered F7's :)

Personally if I was limited to one bike if keep the road bike everytime. Just get some clip on aerobars for triathlons and TT's. I've got a TT bike and a road and use my road most of the time. I obviously race on the TT but don't ride it a great deal just for fun as much as I do the road bike.
