Road Cycling Essentials

Been cycling for nearly 4 years now but just recently started to log my bike rides with a garmin. Started to log around Aug-Sept so just hit 1k miles for this year.

Garmin HRM arrived too, cheers Grudas

no problems :)

A screen protector for a Garmin?! Why would you need one of those?!

Mine's done over 6000 miles this year, on road and downhill biking, with not one scratch on it.

Don't get why you'd need one tbh.

I have a scratch on mine already! not even sure how I managed to do it lol, but I've got a screen protector for that reason alone just to be safe :) I do leave mine in my backpack with keys so its a good idea to have one on.

case I might have to get one too.. smashed my motoactv's screen don't want the same thing to happen with garmin :o

my stats for 2013

Distance - 4,457.6 mi
Time - 314h
Elev Gain - 125,069 ft
Rides - 636

quite happy with this tbh :) was aiming for 5k/miles but due to the fact that I was ill for 2 weeks and couldn't get out much during the weekends due to course works I wasn't able to get to 5k..

2014 aims

distance - 5k/miles lets try again! :)
metric century
london to brighton or london to southend ride needs to be done during summer! :)
upgrade my groupo!
climb 130k ft

should be possible to do :)

Am i right in saying that for each set of garmin maps you need a separate micro sd card? i.e one for openstreetmaps, separate one for os maps etc?

Also is there a minimum spec of card to get? I read that buying something like a 32GB card is overkill and reduces access times so looking for a sweetspot.

I've got 8gb and generated half of uk with OSM maps, its less than 1gb in size :) no need for more IMO

rides only take around 300kb to 3mb for a long ride.

and you can have more than one map.. just got to settings and select which map is enabled :)

Thanks grudas :) I think i've got an 8GB card lying around somewhere. Probably hiding in a drawer somewhere - those damn tiny things :D

I have a genius plan to get my total mileage for 2014 but not clog up other people's strava with 10 commutes per week!

I will record all my rides but only upload "proper" rides to Strava and then upload all my rides to Garmin Connect.

Okay, it's not really genius but it'll work.:D

yeah I had one in my drawer lol! formatted and fallowed the article I posted to get the OSM maps on it and that was it :) just select them in the settings and off you go, you can search by street, city etc.. plus it has all the local shops, petrol stations etc etc :o

the 500km guy that did the ride over night lives a couple of miles from me.. he is suggesting we go for some rides during the weekends but I don't have a chance of keeping up with him when he managed 300+ miles over the night lol.

I got my Garmin 800 today. Realised my bike was filthy so thought I'd better clean it up before fitting it. While cleaning it I ran out of muc-off, realised my front brake pads were almost completely gone, my back wheel is out of true AND the sidewall of one of my tyres had split and the inner tube was peaking out! Good job it didn't blow when I was doing 40+ on it yesterday

An expensive day, and the weather looks appalling for the next week so it'll be a while before I actually get to try out the Garmin. :(

lucky? next time remember to always check your bike! especially tyres.. :o

5700KM (3500 miles) this year :) 5KM climbing.

Do you live somewhere incredibly flat? I've only done 2500 km but managed nearly 27km of accent.

Targets for next year are 3.5k km, which shouldn't be to bad as I barely rode for the first 3 months of this year, and an imperial century. I also aim to keep a distance/climb ratio of at least 1km/10m to stop me just doing lazy road routes.

Since everyone is doing it, my goals for 2014 (initially) are:

- 4000 miles
- 150mi in a single ride
- sub-3 hour London2Brighton
- sub-1 hour for 3 ACW laps of RP.
- Ride at Herne Hill velodrome
- GET FASTER

Goals:

- 3500km (the first few months are a write off with work/dissertation/exams)
- 71kg -> 65kg
- Minimum 1 week cycle tour over summer

65kg? y?Y?YYY :o

my mass aim is to go from 77 to 85kg next year.. - this should before a healthy cut ;)

I'd like to get down to 11 stone at some point, but I'm not going to make a goal of it. I lost weight without even trying last year, so I can probably get close to that without you g to the trouble of actually worrying about it.

I keep a few different maps on my SD card and rename them as and when I need them, so I have one map file for UK, one for France, one for Australia and so on. I just rename whichever map I need to gmapsupp.img and leave the others on the card. I believe if your map file is huge it slows boot and navigation times.
