Made in the same factory as the Giant bikes, according to who...

Personally I wouldn't buy a Chinese un branded frame, especially off ebay.

If you can look and buy one in a uk shop with warranty then possibly, but off the net, no chance.

No issue here on my spd sl, I think the route of your commute does make a lot, I pass through about 10 sets of traffic lights over 9.5 miles but due to the timings I'm able to either track stand or slow enough to wait for them to go green, when I do have to unclip it is hardly a faff to get back in and good practise for when you really need to emergency do it.

Agreed.

Completely depends on your ride. I'm just switching from SPDs to SLs on my Winter bike/commuter. On my 13 mile ride to work, I have about 3 places in total where I have to stop so there's not much faffing about.

MTB SPDS, forget anything else unless you are racing.
One sided road pedals are **** for commuting.

I commute through Central London on SLs and have done for four years and they are absolutely fine. SL pedals are a lot more useful in regular shoes too.

RTS Carbon frames, anyone know much about them ? Seems another generic far east frame although this is also made in the same factory as Giant frames ? Anyway the link below is to the frame on ebay, it can be built into a complete bike for £1000, which is C2W money. Going to take a look today if possible anyway as there is a LBS selling this gear.

PS It would appear to be a very light frame with full carbon fork and steerer, 3k weave etc ?

have look through this.

A few of us (who cycle a similar route to work) met up this morning for a coffee in the local Costa. Made a nice start to the commute even with the wind and rain.

Personally I'd go for something like the PX Ultegra for that price (or the XLS). Better groupset, warranty... worse wheels on the XLS I guess.

I suppose if you find an LBS that will do you that bike with warranty that's kind of cool though.

That sounds pretty pro. Shame that all the guys I ride with set off at drastically different times.

Also, my commute is only 2.5 miles so the coffee would take longer than the ride :p

Nice. I'm rapidly reaching the point where the 34 inch waist ones I wear are getting ridiculously baggy. Getting back into 32 would be nice. I don't think I've worn 30 since I was about 15 though :p

Awesome :D I'm a similar height but a few kgs heavier. Still wearing 34's but won't be long before I can fit into a 32.

Soloist had a flat rear this morning so I jumped on the Burls instead. Twice I had to check if the rear tyre was soft because it felt so noodley in comparison. It also felt very upright.

Unfortunately for PX I would be buying blind as its too far to travel and also on the C2W scheme the bike would cost me another £120 in charges. So its put me right off.

£100 surely? /pedantic :p

But I agree. The extra charge put me off quite a lot. That said, when I looked around at alternatives even with the extra charge factored in the PX stuff represented very good value for money.

I caught a train down to Rotheram then rode back on my new XLS. It wasn't that bad buying blind as I had a rough idea of what I needed based on the published frame geometry and such. Obviously it helps that I live less than 60 miles away from PX so it was feasible to ride back and get a short train there.

reading through just now, the plan is not to buy from Ebay as there is a LBS not far who deal in these frames, in fact the owner races for the Team. Anyway 5yr warranty on the frame etc so cannae be that bad. In fact I dare say these are the same frames that PX,Ribble and possibly Dolan deal in ?

If you can get one from an LBS I think it makes a world of difference and makes the Chinese frame far more attractive a prospect.

Well its my prefered option, although spec wise PX is probably better. My other option was a non carbon frame ie Cube Peleton Race, full 105 and Mavic Wheels, looks the biz.

The other option of course is Dolan do some not bad deals, and the charges are half I think. So could get a similar bike with Campag Veloce or Sram Rival.

There's no point paying extra for an "RTS" branded frame. There isnt any guarantees of proper quality control or anything like that.
If you want a cheap chinese frame, get an unbranded bare carbon frame and paint it yourself (or even leave it bare) - that's all that an "RTS" frame is anyway.

Chances are that it probably is made by Giant.
AFAIK there are only 3-4 manufacturers who make carbon frames: Giant, Merida and some chinese companies that nobody has heard of.
Being made in the same factory doesnt mean they are the same quality though:
-They might be big-name frames which have failed the QC process and should have been binned
-They might be made from the same moulds as big-name frames but there's nothing to say the same quality of materials was used
-They might be overruns on the number of frames produced - identical to the big-name frames

It's a risk - there's no way to tell. (Just because somebody else has ordered one and done some testing on it doesnt mean they'll all be the same)

FWIW I bought some unbranded carbon wheels from china a couple of years ago. They were used purely as race wheels so didnt do a lot of miles, but the miles they did do were hard. Never had any problems with them. Also made back most of the money when i sold them on (with a clear explanation in the advert of where they came from).

Also, you'll never be able to build a £500 frame into a £1000 bike even close to the spec of the PlanetX pro carbon ultegra.

First time ever wearing cleats and you're doing it on a fixie?
Not like I have a lot of choice :p

Agreed. I think the route has a lot to do with it and I have to dismount at least 10 times at traffic lights, in stationary traffic or at roundabouts. I need something I can reliably clip into without looking or to be able to stamp on for a pedal stroke without slipping off. It's ok away from lights, but it's a definite advantage (fixed gear) if I can get in a full rotation before flicking the pedal and clipping in. This ensures a safe acceleration from a standstill and I can't do that with Look cleats. It compromised me on two big roundabouts this morning and I can foresee it might make the difference between consistent safe riding and getting squashed if I can't clip in in time - fixed or freewheel.
