Road Cycling Essentials

So I turned up at the redhill cc meeting point today to find they weren't actually running a G1(their easiest group) ride, as there isn't much demand for it, which they like newcomers to go on ideally (or a newcomers ride) first to check we aren't going to be a liability in a faster moving group. A couple others had thought the same and turned up so one of the G2 guys lead an easy ride for us.

Enjoyed it and nice weather, despite how the website may come across it is a really friendly club and they were more than happy to have us come along. Just need to get a membership form and join up now.

One very short climb near me I decided to push hard going up as my legs aren't usually as fresh, got 5th overall out of 1200 people. At 95kg I'm pretty impressed at that actually! Hills usually put me in the bottom 10%. Guess my 20 second sprint isn't too bad.

Skills ride with the NCC today was fun. Really friendly group and they were more than happy to put up with my lack of any ability to stick to formation :p Pacing was nice and relaxed too - though I did go with the slow group. The experience did remind me of how much I suck at hills though :D

Managed to complete a challenge I've been wanting to do for a while.

Good work!

Plucking up the courage to go a long for the first time is the hardest part. Riding with a club is a great for a lot of reasons, good job :)

Well I had to pick it up from Slough and it's the most direct route.

I'm going to assume you're joking! :D

Managed to complete a challenge I've been wanting to do for a while. My house to the missus' parents. Feels good but wont be doing that again any time soon!

Good ride that, my brother lives in Braintree and always thought I'd like to ride to his at some point, although always thought, whats the best way there, and how do you negotiate the Thames, what was the route like? I presume you just used a ferry?

First ride in the pyrenees:

Nice and steady, knees felt good. It was hot - early 30s, and my HR went absolutely nuts. That's not a mistake on there, I was sitting at 210BPM riding at threshold - crazy! Think I was under-hydrated at the start of the ride

Longer ride tomorrow including the Port de Bales - it might only have a 6.3% average but it's deceptive as you can see from the profile

You still went faster up those hills than I go though so it can't have been that sluggish.

My ride to Leek was mixed.

It was all going fine up until I hit High Legh, then it was just constant stopped traffic down the A50, so careful filtering all the way, then more bad traffic past Tatton. Onto Knutsford was a right pain, going through the centre was a traffic fest too then once I got out of Knutsford the road had just been resurfaced for about two miles and loads of little stones kept getting kicked up by the cars and hitting me. I couldn't go fast because the back wheel just kept squirming about. Was a total pain

Then I broke out onto the country lanes around Jodrell Bank and on to Congleton which was much more fun. More turmoil getting through Congleton though and very heavy traffic. Then some hills at the back end which I was reasonably pleased with my performance on.

All in all a decent ride, but the traffic and roads tarnished it a little bit, hence the ridiculously slow average speed.

Decided to ride out to where Stage 3 of the Tour is passing through. Ended up doing a century but it was tougher than I expected. although the elevation stats don't look that impressive the ride was constantly up and down. First solo 100 of the year and I don't mind admitting that I am ****ed now. Nice tan lines though.

Was supposed to do a 130km ride this morning but felt crap so stayed in bed.:o

I got out this evening and managed to tick off one of my 2014 goals of doing a solo 3-lap challenge of RP.

There was a bit of traffic so I could have done slightly better I think, but 59:43 is less than an hour regardless!

I did the same today. Rode from Arlesey to Trumpington and back. Total distance if 52 miles. Which way did you go after crossing A1? I tried the A603 into Cambridge which was OK until M11 junction.
