Swapped out my SPD cleats/shoes/pedals for some SPD-SL goodness yesterday. Taking a bit to get used to the non double-sided clipping in :o

Well well well... Vitorria finally let me down or its just my luck ;D but yesterday morning I found a puncture on my front wheel! Today had another on the way home on the rear now :( boooo... Out of spare tubes now! Duh

I already have the Cadence and can't really spend that much on a GPS when I don't actually need one... Planning to do more riding and get more adventurous in the new year so I'm getting my Cadence/Speed (GSC10 - got it last week) and HRM now to 'spread the cost'... Also really interested in my heartrate to figure out if I can push myself harder ;)

Difference in power usage between Ant+ and BTLE is virtually zero.

If you plan to get a Garmin eventually then get Ant+. If you don't care about that or you don't mind replacing your sensors, get BTLE. As far as I know, coded is always a good thing.

Lots of confusing info out there but it's actually fairly simple :)

Yeah everywhere you read has different info, that's kinda why I asked here as I can be sure the info is accurate and not full of marketing bullcrap! Your call with IpBike was spot on mate ;)

I *do* plan to get a garmin/GPS in the new year so getting my sensors now to spread the cost a little, ideally looking at the 810/upwards so getting everything ANT+ so I'm as future proof as possible

Try the Pro 4 Endurances mate, they're great! ;)

You'll have enjoyed your walk instead though? :p Or was your last spare used on the rear wheel tonight?

It was haha! Lucky me I had a spare.. Patching would have taken a while! Plus I was 9 miles from home ;) found a massive sharp stone in the tire that punctured it ;)

@Roady - yeah ;) on my list, next set of tires with be the pro 4's!

I think I'm going to ask for some spd-sl pedals and shoes for Christmas. Join the pros...

Tangent... Mate of mine drove 30 miles to a sportive and found he'd left his cycling shoes at home. Had to drive back and give it up as a bad job. Doh!

To be 100% honest I'm not sure about the coding thing but I can't imagine it being an issue. Ant+ sounds like it's the way to go for you - the only reason I didn't was that Ant+ support on my phone is a little dodgy (doable, but slightly dodgy).

Muwahaha :D

I'm still not sure I see the advantage unless you're racing or something. They're lighter, yes, but aside from that more inconvenient, more expensive and more hassle

Don't worry about average speed on the turbo.

1) use a phone book
2) buy a fan
3) use a towel

Enjoy! :D

I had another crack on the turbo this evening. I fashioned myself a ghetto riser by cutting up the corrugated cardboard box that the chap sent the turbo in, and taping a whole bunch of squares into a big stack. That helped a lot with making the bike feel right and stopping it walking all the way from one end of the kitchen to the other. I dug our desk fan out of the attic, which made things much more pleasant and decidedly less sweaty, but for good measure I wrapped an old towel around my top tube to protect that. I also put some music on, which helped the time go by much more easily. 40 minutes this time without too much bother. I enjoyed it much more this time. I might be on it again tomorrow night if the mrs is out again...

It's as much the better shoes I'm after. I'm using a pair of Shimano mo77 shoes which cost about £20 on CRC in a sale a couple of years ago and they're not terribly solid and the velcro fastenings aren't great. I'd like to try some firmer shoes, and if I'm going down that route I may as well go to SPD-SL shoes in the same step.

I won't change all my pedals, just those on my best bike; I'll leave my SPD/flat combo pedals on my old bike, given it gets used for all sorts of rubbish.

All this talk of HR monitors - I had a garmin, swapped out the strap for a polar but after a few years it just isn't reliable anymore despite changing the batteries. I'm tempted to try the wahoo one as it would need to be ANT+

Which handset are you using? ANT+ seems very solid on my S5, I imagine the S4 would be similar... Although I'm not constantly reading info from my GSC10 the readings displayed in IpBike seem nice and stable

Sounds like effort! ;) Something more long term would be a solid beanbag/sandbag - would be nice and firm with no chance of damaging floor/tyre etc?

Which garmin did/do you have mate? The wahoo one gets good reviews and I've heard great things about the Suunto (far out of my price league lol!)

Nexus 5. The chipset supports Ant+ but by default the software stack doesn't so you need to either work out the (annoyingly extremely) complicated method of getting Ant+ working or paying for an app made by someone to do it. Paying for the app doesn't bother me too much but the prospect of support being ruined by a future update or the app developer shutting up shop does.

Ah, fair enough. I have slightly more expensive Shimano shoes that are fairly stiff (phrasing) but they weigh an absolute ton and started to fall apart after only about ~2k miles. I plan on replacing them too and for all that I said above I would still consider SPD-SL "just to try it" but I've not seen any winter shoes in SL form and I really want some that are super waterproof with built-in ankle covers.

Jesus wept it was cold this morning. Took about 7 miles just to get some feeling in my fingers - time to get the full-finger gloves out!

I actually found it ok this morning, was a colder wind monday/tuesday and today felt warmer than yesterday morning! This weekend is ment to be wet and I've not been brave enough to check next week... yet...

Is that IpBike? After loading the extra sensors app my GSC10 worked with no configuration required! I'm kinda hoping that Strava implement ANT+ by the time I have to consider paying for IpBike or not... It's great software but really does feel like one guy developing in his shed! (they all start somewhere!). I'd feel happier paying for Strava than some stopgap/makeshift app (that IpBike feels like).

It's an extra app called something like Ant+ Unlocker. Without it IpBike will only see BTLE sensors (on my phone at least). I kind of trust IpBike to be around a bit more than Ant+ Unlocker, perhaps unfairly :)

:( woke up this morning with rear flat again.... wut! guess I pinched the tube yesterday when changing it in dark eh the awesomeness of super tight tyres that kill leavers and rims with higher than normal wall :o

Ah, that sucks :/ I've had a few situations like that and it's really not what you need first thing in the morning.
