For 12 pounds per pair of shoes my expectations would be quite low tbh...

Yeah not expecting anything fantastic to be honest but they'll put me on for a while and on the next service ill get some decent ones popped on

It's a bit annoying agreed, I can understand cheap bikes coming without them but not something like a Defy :/

Exactly my point, Alu frame carbon folks shimano sora chainset and then bog standard crappy shoes.. Rather odd choice.

The ones I'm getting surely are better, especially when I pop my Swissstops on there.

Crazy price but not sure I'd trust something I didn't know the branding of... Not heard of OBE? :o

Brake pads is one thing I don't scrimp on, rim braking stopping power is bad enough without questioning your pads!

I've been bragging about them for months! :) the reds are great! and I commute in all weather and never had a problem, actually performs better than many more expensive pads.

the shoes come with the caliper, the manufacturer buys the caliper

it's the component manufacturers to blame, and shimano at least use it as a differentiator (iirc you need at least 105 to get proper brake pads)

It looks like you will need to replace the whole block.

It doesn't look like they are shoes with brake inserts.

This is correct - my 2012 Defy 2 was the same.

Obviously shimano do their own shoe/insert, but i'm currently using the cheap aztec ones and they have been fine.

Tiagra 4700 has been announced. Still only 10 speed, but with concealed cable routing, 4 arm crankset, better looks, better quality parts, etc, etc.

Got the Merida CycloCross 500 today, nice bike and weights around 19lbs with heavy wheelset.

Love the brake levers on the top of the bars, was very handy for holding the dog lead and braking at the same time which is very hard on a standard drop bar setup - possibly not merida or the cyclocross worlds normal usage scenario.

105 is a million times cleaner and smoother than the old Sora setup I had on the road bike, looking forward to actually using it as a bimble with the daughter and dog doesn't count but that I used it for that today goes someway to show why I made the choice in getting it.

Wheelies decided that as I ordered 25mm road tyres that they would do the job of fitting these to the wheels for me prior to shipping and then not bother sending the 35mm cyclocross tyres, There excuse is "The insurance company only cover 1 set of tyres as that is what you would have had stolen..."

Yes, of course....strange how the words "£1300 to spend how you like" then come with clauses when they mess up delivery.

obviously, tyres are now in the post.

I think its a good looking beast:

neither would I normally but they were previously recommended to me and I can't fault them. 2000 miles last year on them, zero issues.

Tell you what - I'll send you a pair of pads (i have spares) and give them a test sometime and let me know. trust me your home address if you want

No need for that mate but thanks for the offer! I'm still using my Koolstop Salmons but will swap them out once the weather is less... wet! I have 2 new sets of 'normal' pads to use. The factory Giant pads my Defy 1 2015 came with seem terrible for stopping with so they'll go on the turbo bike out the way.

As mentioned it's really Shimano to blame as their 'full sora' setup is with integrated blocks/shoes

A ringing endorsement with the miles you do grudas, I'll prob try them in the autumn ;)

105 is a breeze and a pleasure to use, mine is still 99% as good as when new 700 miles ago!

Wheelies are a joke for returns/replacements, I only use them as a last resort. Glad you got your tyres sorted as sounds like a factory fubar (and an excuse).

The CC500 is a great spec bike - hadn't even realised about the extra brake lever! Many other XC rides got this? Looks good too, but I'd want one in the 'Reacto' colour scheme ;)

Who can tell me about bottom brackets? I'm going to be upgrading my TDF from 2300 to claris, which means moving from a square taper bb to an octalink one. The bb I'm currently using has a 110mm spindle, but how do I work out what length I need for octalink?

A post on the Triban owners forum from someone doing the same thing said they needed a 118mm spindle. Is this likely to hold for a different frame, assuming the bb shells are the same width?

Popped into see my dad today and he asked if I wanted to see his new bike(s), of course I obliged and spotted this one:

It's a 1987 Raleigh Centenary 24K gold plated (lol) LTD Ed (200 made) with full Shimano 105 groupset. In brand new show room condition.

spindle length is dependent on the cranks.

All English threaded road bikes have 68mm shells.

does look good!

much better than the current one! to a point where I wouldn't run from it! current is all nice and good but the crankset.. GOOD GOD who designed that thing.. pretty much makes any bike look crap - PERSONAL OPINION OF COURSE.

it's only 8quid! :) worth a shot at that price I'd say..

my brother runs them(same miles as me) and I've got them on all my bikes.

Shimano hydraulic brakes arrived. So close to having all the bits I need.

Sadly I'm off tomorrow morning to Helsinki. The bike build will have to wait until Tuesday next week.

Makes sense that it's still 10 speed. They've got 8 (Claris), 9 (Sora), 10 (Tiagra) and 11 (105/Ultegra). Means most people will be able to source replacement parts for a good while yet. 4700 does look good, hard to tell what there is to seperate it from 105 apart from weight. Kind of a shame we probably won't see reasonably priced bikes with it until the end of 2016's season though.

The motherland! As in, literally, my mother's land. You there for business or pleasure? I've not been there in years. Eat some reindeer for me.
