yeah that's my first priority. Its the frame, forks and handle bars from Giant Defy 5 2013. Going to buy new for everything else. Luckily I was stationary when car hit me, the car was behind me at a roundabout (stationary as well) but then came forward and bent wheel and chain ring

building a bike is basically like doing every component's service all at the same time. If you've done any DIY maintenance, you should be set.

Rained off today, had planned about 45m/3,500ft. Tbh though I needed a 'recovery' ride as my lifting has been effected a bit this week by overeaching a bit I think.

Stuck a film on the turbo & got settled instead. Did standing drills every 5 minutes during work intervals for 30-45s to restore bloodflow which has left me completely pain free in the sit bone region :) after the last 2hr:15m turbo with zero standing I was almost in agony .

Very nice :)

How have you found the kcal burn estimates vs your kcal in/out and weight fluctuations out of interest?

I have a spare frame and forks from an old bike, I'm looking to build it back up but with newer parts such as groupset and wheels (due to car breaking them  )

Any guides on how to build one?

It's very easy, I've built my first bike at 7! Was an old "admiral" MTB.. ! Just make sure you have the tools and that everything fits together and you'll be good! Especially with YouTube being as full of how-to videos as it gets.

Wow my legs hurt. Good weekend though. Got my road bike back from it's service yesterday, expensive but feels like a new bike! It needed new bearings in both hubs, bottom bracket, chain, and they also replaced the cables and bar tape.
Rode it back on the Saturday for a short spin, but was keen for the group ride on Sunday, so only did 16 miles, with a Cat 4 at the start.

Sunday's group ride, it hurt a lot, and I couldn't manage the whole 150km, but smashed my furthest distance and doubled my max climbing on a ride. Overall I managed 76 miles, with 4300ft of climbing. The group I was with were training for Etape, so I knew the pace would be high. My legs gave out after 45 miles, and I didn't want to slow the group down any longer. So I headed for the most direct route home. Unfortunately, I was pretty much at the furthest point away from home as possible. I cycled (slowly!) past a train station, and really wanted to give in, but pushed myself. A couple of climbs towards the end I had to walk up, my calves were cramping every time the road hit an incline, and I really started to doubt whether I'd make it home. Ordered a huge pizza now, as I don't have the energy to make anything :P I may have to walk into work tomorrow.

kinda zonked, was meant to go out and do 80~km over about 4 hours but it ended up 115km over 5 hours. Last weekend was only 60km days. My mate did about 65km with me on a fixie, struggled to keep up with him for most of it :)

If the frame is in good nick, then all your really need to know is whether you need a braze on or band on front mech, and the tube diameter if it's band on. I've looked on the Giant website and can't find out what type it takes. The picture looks like it might be braze on, but I'm not sure. It takes a BSA threaded bottom bracket, so pretty much any groupset on sale will be fine. As I recall, the Defy frames are the same up and down the range, and the grades were determined by groupset and finishing kit. Depending on how much you want to spend you could go for Tiagra, 105 or Ultegra. Buy the whole groupset from Ribble for £200 or so (Tiagra) or £500 (Ultegra) and then pick up a toolset like the Icetoolz Essence kit. There should be enough videos out there that you can follow to figure out what needs to be screwed on where.

I'm out of town at the moment, but my wife called me to say my neighbour had come off his bike :( He was doing a sportive out in Cheshire or something. It sounds like a full on over the handlebars job. His helmet bought it, and he's a bit banged up and stiff as you'd expect. He'd been to hospital with it and been x-rayed but it seems he's OK as he's back home.

He'll most likely have been on his Specialized Roubaix SL4 Expert... So that's potentially the better part of £3k of bike going crunch...

Managed to get out on the bike both days this w/end - only the second time that's happened since March! Need to knuckle down and put some work in as it's all been a bit stop/start so far this year for one reason or another.

Got out with the fast group saturday morning, also the first time since march:
https://app.strava.com/activities/324419440

Decent enough day, not too windy and dry and overcast. Got round ok although it was hard going at times and i nearly popped at a couple of points. Recovered well enough though so did an extra 25 miles solo at the end just to get something in the legs.

Then out today for an easy one with the Sunday cafe bunch, only the weather was drizzling, grey and crap so nobody hung around for the cafe stop and just headed home.

Legs were feeling it a bit after saturday but i need the miles.

I have one, and this is all correct. And it's a braze on for the Defy also.

Chances are it'll be a bit or all of the nipple thats gone back into the rim, depending on what has broken.

Might be ok to ride if it isn't too far from true if you go really steady

yeah, probably the nipple that's inside the rim now, rim tape will stop it from touching the tube.

I've cycled for 20miles on 19 spokes up front no problems ;) braking is crap due to the buckle in the wheel but other than that, be careful, avoid potholes/bumps and you'll get there!

It was fine, just went steady, theyre having it done for tomorrow afternoon so i can commute on it as i want to pass this months Strava climbing challenge haha.

I wonder whats causing me to keep damaging the wheels!

Great ride, well done! No wonder you found it 'easy' with that elevation ;)

Haha its not a lot in comparison to what im used to on a shorter commute! Belting speed though, really happy with it! Been trying hard this week to try get my speed up! Just hard work whilst im doing this climbing challenge as the speeds up hill aren't great!

That reach is obscene! Is it a small frame comparatively?

I thought that! Doesnt look rideable, its a hell of a reach that!

Off to Majorca tomorrow, lalaaaa! Feeling utterly achy and drained after a stag do this weekend. Zorb football has given me whiplash. My legs hurt just to lift my foot off the accelerator pedal and onto the brake pedal.

Hi All

Small update from Mallorca.

IT'S HOT!

Like 25c at 9am hot.

<snip>
Unfortunately it's just too hot to ride past 9/10am for me. Im up at 6am to get a bit of a ride in and it's still 17/18c then! Some of you might think thats not hot at all but I don't want to be in a creek without a paddle regarding hydration; I play it safe.

That's why people cycling it do it early in the year! ;) I know guys who were going there in February/March. You may even find September too hot - check 'historical weather' charts for the time of year you're looking at if temperature is that decisive for you. Expensive mistake otherwise!

We cycled in Rhodes @ ~30 degrees (late morning/middle of the day). The sea breeze and short distance (3 miles!) it was ok, without that breeze I'd have really suffered!

What is everyone paying for bike insurance?
I've had a quote of £152, including public liability with a bike value of £2.5k
Does that sound about right?

Was around £30 a year here for both of us with telling them how many bikes (5) and then a +£5 increase when the most valuable bike (mine) went from £350 to £900.

Ours is done as an extra to our home & contents insurance, includes 3rd party liability and the bikes up to 100 miles from home. In reality I may get further than that, but not very often! ;)

Used the 3D printer to make a natty little pair of frame hangers for my tin of Pit Stop. I don't know why Vittoria don't sell these.

IMG_0823_1.jpg

That's awesome! 3D printer at your work? There's always bits I want one for...! ;)

Must say i'm quite taken by the 2016 Felt bikes, oh my....

They look great, the Felt rides are looking better and better now they're mixing more colours and designs.

yeah that's my first priority. Its the frame, forks and handle bars from Giant Defy 5 2013. Going to buy new for everything else. Luckily I was stationary when car hit me, the car was behind me at a roundabout (stationary as well) but then came forward and bent wheel and chain ring

I'd be cautious of the rear dropout and mech hanger too, just incase they've taken a twist from the force.

Bear in mind you can get a new Defy 5 2015 for £499. So if you're looking at a £200 wheelset and £300 groupset make sure it's a substantial upgrade on Claris and S-R2 wheels (not hard if my P-R2's were anything to go by).

Went out for a solo ride yesterday, I followed most of a route from a club/shop ride a few weeks back I'd had to drop out of after my cleat problems. I felt strong even though my legs were still slightly tired from the hard ride on Thursday (and commuting friday). A little more climbs than I'd normally do, but that's what I'm heading towards now on my 30 mile rides. The last 2 climbs (short sharp) I totally buried myself on the first confident I could power up it only for some stupid car to overtake me and then sharply cut back in causing me to brake (reflex) and lose most of my momentum. I'd overcooked it anyway as the second climb hurt (had to sit and grind it)! :D

I'd like to do 30 miles with 2000 ft of climbing at 16/17mph. Longer distances are something I've not had much opportunity at (yet), but I'm fairly sure my legs would hold out for 50/60 miles at 14/15mph. Will have to put that to the test!

With the two bigger rides and my 1 day commuting I managed 67 miles last week - not bad considering I was out of the country for half of it! ;)

Loads warmer this morning commuting, actually pushed it a bit as was lucky with some light changes. Also didn't wear my jacket for the first time this year (on a morning ride)! Hello summer! :D Just arm & leg warmers (with jersey, base and shorts). Even wore short fingers, I was cool so I think when getting new jerseys I'll get a couple for commuting which are more roubaix. It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and as some of my cycling gear is a little large on me (yay!) I'll be replacing some (jerseys mostly) :)

Also have a hole in 1 of my good pairs of shorts - the velcro from my saddlebag came slightly undone and has snagged the inside ride leg. It's not stitch-able, but are there adhesive lycra 'patches' you can get? :(

Ouch! Glad he's ok, hope the bike is too! Will be a story attached to that one I'm sure!

You're a machine! Insane average! Well done! :)

I wonder whats causing me to keep damaging the wheels!

They're rubbish wheels? ;)

At least with weight/commuting bags they seem to be. You've snapped spokes, I found nipples kept coming loose/wheels out of true!

I've had zero issues with my grudas recommended £105 replacements, admittedly they've only done ~300 miles. They feel superb, I'd stopped hopping pot holes with the Giant's but I'm back to doing it now and they're holding up well! :D

Off to Majorca tomorrow, lalaaaa!

Take it easy the first day or so and you'll be fine. Although whiplash/neck problems is something I'm getting more of, not 100% sure it isn't my riding position (tense shoulders over long periods). Most of all, have fun!

Woke up this morning to find my rear tyre flat. One of the crappy self-adhesive puncture repair tabs had decided to fall off. Awesome start to the day :p

Are those 'Scabs'? I'd thought about getting some as replacements to my traditional glue & patches.

They're the Specialized Flat Boy patches. They do kind of work out in the field but they just don't last. I was already quite convinced that they weren't worth messing about with (instead just take an extra 5 minutes to glue it properly or just use your spare tube) and they're not doing anything to change my mind.

I found that with the Park Tools patches. Ok on MTB tubes but not road, stick to normal patches and glue after being bitten by that once.

Damn... That really sucks to get hurt after all the works he's put in getting fit. At least he sounds like he's ok. :(

Re: Majorca - I'm heading to Majorca again next May. I reckon anything after late April-Mid May will be too hot tbh. We should all coordinate and meet up over there if a few of us are planning the same.

Are you making it to the Manchester ride this coming Sat? :)

Maybe. It seems I'm double booked with one that Von's suicidal neighbour has arranged so I'll have to ponder which one to attend. The Manc ride will definitely be the tougher one as I'm still massively underperforming compared to before my break. The odd weekend ride just isn't cutting it as far as getting my fitness back.
