Pics, yo!

I meant to get some over the weekend somewhere a bit more scenic than leant against my garage door but my phone decided to die overnight! I'll get some up.

I did have a bit of a downer when I realised that the cracked shifter window that I took vouchers as compensation for rattled over rough roads and was kicking myself for not taking a replacement bike instead. Then I found the replacement part online for a fraction of the compensation amount so I was all smiles again :D I'm going to have a go at tightening the screws first but if that doesn't work a replacement is less than a tenner inc. postage.

Build is getting there Von, keep us updated with the progress this afternoon :)

I saw the Planet X boss had said on BR that orders placed using the UKDL20 code wouldn't be honoured, but with PX you never know!

Saw that but then other people have been getting things delivered.

if that's the case then just tell the customers? I mean really, the order has been sitting there for 6 working days without an update?

Exactly. Would only take an email or a phone call. They haven't called me back yet to confirm whether mine has been cancelled.

Wheels, chain and pedals on. No brakes yet, and the headset is still exceedingly loose.

So it's about ready to ride by hipster single speed standards.

Ridiculous winds again today. Wasn't so bad in the morning but this afternoon going home for lunch the headwinds were quite severe. On the upside, massive wind-assistance coming back into work so a PR, silver and a top 10. Woo :)

Could be worth buying in a few calorie-dense foods to be able to snack on. Flapjacks are about my favourite thing in the world.

I've always had a weakness for flapjacks (and any cake really...) especially now I've made them a couple of times... Surely they're healthier than the 'millionaires shortbread' my mrs made over the weekend... At least they have grains and fruit in! :o:rolleyes:

Yeah. I'm having similar doubts about the saddle. I'm sure once I set it on it's wheels I'll find those bits are well wonky!

Saddle is defo a little 'aggressive'! And the shifters look very retro in their placement! I thought that was maybe the hipster look? ;)

Looking good so far though!

Negatives are only really at the start when she was quite slow and it was rather frustrating going out and going so slow. Thats changing now though it seems, based on the last ride anyway, she's keeping up much more now after about 6-7 months. (she goes gym 3-4 a week, and one big ride at weekend)

Yeah mine went out for some basic rides with me (cue: touch) - when I got my hybrid around 18 months ago and she'd leave me for dead... But not any longer, I've only ridden home with her a couple of times but the average speed is ~8mph! Painfully slow now! ;)

How often does she cycle though? :p

Wah-HEY! :D:rolleyes:

To be honest coming from shifter windows to none (105) I realised how little I actually used them when I had them... You could probably glue the broken window together and into the surround as you may still be able to see enough? They don't have the gear 'number' or any notches anyway, I think the only time I used to look was when jumping on the bike and thinking 'did I leave this on the big ring or are my legs not awake'? :p

Now, I seem to have more gears to my fitness. I can keep up in my tempo zones now, rather than riding at threshold.
I made a a small video of our groups race up Beacon Hill, unfortunately didn't win!

How do you easily figure out your zones when out riding? Just know which HR each zone generally is? Like for my saturday ride, the first 10 miles I couldn't get my HR below 160! I try and ride below that when commuting all week... :o

Cool video, needs benny hill themetune (no sound on my work PC if it's already there!) ;)

You can get your garmin to display HR as a percentage of max rather than the actual bpm number so it's easier to work out which zone you're in.

Then you would know which percentages are which zones, like
<60% zone1
60-70 zone2
70-80 zone3
80-90 zone4
90-95 zone 5a
95-100 zone 5b

(that's just an example, dont copy it. I dont use HR zones so I dont know what percentages to use)

To be honest I'm not fussed about having the window to see what gear I'm in. The numbered positions on my MTB and hybrid are handy but a quick glance at a vague position of an orange bar doesn't do much for me :p It is just the 'something broken on my new bike' thing :o I'd have just left it (I ran a little superglue into the cracking on the opaque bit to stop it spreading) but the rattling is annoying. I've just found a UK stockist that has them in stock and doesn't want to charge me twice the value of the part to post it to me so I've ordered a new one :o

Since having the coil fitted my Mrs doesn't cycle at all.

I am going to embark on a serious core strength program. I am really suffering with issues with my hip and glutes. Not sure what it is exactly but sitting down is a literal pain in the arse. Doesn't hurt on the bike but no doubt that this underlying weakness has been exacerbated by upping my training intensity. so I will be stretching, yogaing and foam rolling every moment I am not riding. I suspect its largely due to my hip flexors being really tight.

Hey Roady, congrats on your first club run, impressive average for a social group! My first group ride crashed within the first 5 miles, and I never went back :D

There's waaay cooler music than Benny Hill on that vid :)

As for heart rate zone training, you need to find your Functional Threshold Heart Rate. It's like an FTP test, but focuses on HR rather than power. You basically ride as hard as poss for 30 minutes, and then take the average HR over the final 20 minutes. Once you have that, you can use a calculator to work out zones.

I did a bit of structured training last year. Over time, it's quite easy to work out the zones. You have to be quite disciplined on the recovery rides, so I knew that Z3 started at 136bpm, and to stay away from it :)

The handle fell off my hacksaw as I was cutting the steerer - I had to finish it off with a tea towel wrapped round the remnants of the handle :p

I'm calling a hiatus as my bike shed has arrived so I need to switch over to building that instead...

Remaining on the bike front, I need to:

1) get the star nut in
2) get the headset tightened up properly
3) set the brakes up
4) bar tape
5) mudguards, bottle cages, etc

Not too much left.

I've only installed a headset on mine lol.. ;) if PX stopped messing around I'd build it by end of week!!!! Turds.

I actually really like V brakes, but then having them on every bike i had as a kid and a teenager probably drilled into me how to fiddle with them.

I was thinking the same. I guess it's more difficult with drop bars which dont have the barrel adjusters on the levers.

Still, shouldnt be that hard. Pinch the brake arms together with one hand, tighten the cable in place with the other. Job done.

so after poking PX on FB again I had a response -;

Sorry for the delay in your order.

As these have had the discount code on, they get checked manually for validity, and of course there were record amounts of discount codes used just at the time we had quite a few staff absences for one reason or another.

I have just released your order from the system as it has been too long.

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Ouch! I've suffered with occasional back trouble caused from lifting heavy things when younger (ex farm boy). Since cycling I've actually been ok, if anything my core being stronger has helped me as I don't even have 'sore days' after a bad nights sleep any more... Goodluck in resting it and hope it doesn't slow you down for too long!

Yeah, i was totally crippled this morning. Think i took about half an hour to get dressed for work  my back kept going into spasm when i moved. Walked to work and around the office like a 90yr old man much to the delight of my co-workers  Got myself some Ibuprofen at lunch though and the afternoon was a bit more bearable. We'll see how i am tomorrow morning again!
