Hi guys, got a new job (yay), 2 weeks holiday before I start, maybe 1 week from 7th > 12th and potentially might be able to do something like Mallorca with some bike riding.

Would be going with my dad (he is kindly paying, but not cycling) so needs to be all inclusive a nice hotel in a good location near some bike rental shops (but am looking into taking my own bike).

I know its been mentioned a lot on here but can people recommend some nice places to stay so I can check them out on tripadvisor/sites for availability and price. Any help / advice greatly appreciated.

p.s. Manchester commuters.....was like cycling through a swimming pool on my way into to work today!!! mental

Congrats on the job. What is it?

I looked at the forecast and took today as a rest day ;)

whoop, changed the perms :D lol.

Crazy speed difference. Do you have some weird settings on your Garmin for pausing?

You did two imperials and you're not Steve Abraham.

I expected to be knackered up until maybe Tuesday but it's persisted way more than it should've done (imo). Perhaps all the beer and the longish ride on Wed have set me back.

Thanks, its Regional Graphic Designer for McCarthy & Stone, based in Altrincham so still get to commute to work in this lovely weather, about 7 miles each way. It's a significant step up in role, so chuffed, always felt a bit behind coming back from travelling straight after uni and finally feel I've caught up and in a good place career wise.....think some new cycling shoes might be in order as a treat :P

*edit: probably shouldn't jynx it by saying that about being in a good place, might end up being a horrible job, but hope not !! :)

Check out the Cycling Holiday thread - loads of info about cycling in mallorca.

Just went out for a windy one round Richmond Park and on the return my left shifter appears to have come disconnected from the handlebars. I think it's just hanging on with the bar tape. Is this likely to be easy? I don't want to ruin the bar tape :(

disconnected? may have snapped off then, you should be able to reach the bolt to tighten it up but if it snapped then it will require a new shifter, re-wrap etc.

On the assumption that you've got a Shimano BB in there at the moment, the bearings aren't really replaceable as far as I know. You need to replace the whole assembly and the BB you've linked to includes bearings.
<snip>
That's what annoys me about pressfit BBs, the tools are so expensive that you probably have to switch about 4 before you break even vs what an LBS would charge. Don't know what your LBS is like but all of mine wanted the bike for a couple of days to do a BB switch that takes 30 minutes at very most so for me the cost was worth it.

With pressfit BBs, the issue is not the BB itself but the tolerances to which the frame is built. If the frame is a proper interference fit, you will get loads of life out of the BB. If it's not then life will be reduced accordingly.

Shimano/FSA 'Shimano type' Press fit.

It's a Giant Defy 1 which to be fair isn't a cheap bike and towards the higher end of their Defy range so I would expect (wrongly?) the tolerances to be good and the BB to be a 'good' fit. It's not like they're knocking out a few of these frames in a workshop, they're producing millions in a factory! :D

The last LBS service (3 weeks ago) I asked them to look at the BB and replace if needed, they said no need and to be fair the noises have subsided mostly since them but the fact I still have the occasional one has made me look again at replacing it.

My experiences so far with the unbranded/non-shimano parts on this bike have not been great - a failed Tektro caliper, soft rubbish Giant branded wheels and replacing the rear deraileur hanger. So researching online I came to the conclusion that the BB in mine is FSA rather than Shimano and to replace the BB bearings, many people do it and it's considered a 'cheap' repair.

If in reality due to the BB type (press fit) I need to buy £80 worth of tools and a £35 BB set (including bearings) then so be it, I'll obviously be doing the work myself and probably again in future so a useful purchase and another home maintenance skill to add to my portfolio!

Same, should be getting a package delivered too along with saving some power for the shop ride tomorrow :D

Was thinking of getting this to complement the synapse

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kona-jake-2015/

thinking of using it for commuting, winter training, camping and any light trails I can find. Can fit guards and a rack on it. what do you think?

Good bike and the Konas are well regarded but I've always considered the cable discs and Tiagra setup on there quite over priced compared to others (like the Synapse).

Geez. I'll have to take a look later. Is it that easy to snap? :(

Looks like tightening the screw has worked. Seems to be tight now. The bar tape had become a bit loose and I asked LBS to fix that during first free service the other day so perhaps they didn't tighten the shifter enough afterwards. Phew.. as I just read the price of shifters!

Yep, unfortunately even the multi thousand pound superbikes of this world are manufactured to some fairly generous tolerances. I would expect an aluminium frame to somewhat better though in this case as the machining is more precise than carbon.

Yeah I'm not allowed 2 synapes though :p do you think the Kona will get much more discount in the autumn sales?

No idea about Kona prices, I know Cannondale (and many others) have announced their 2016 range so discounts on them should be good...

Ah I assumed you were looking at discs as hadn't got discs already?

If you've already got a 'gravel' orientated synapse then why another bike very similar? Should be enough clearance on the Synapse for 28mm or wider tyres (32cm on the Kona)... Which possibly only really leaves the discs as the difference? It likely has a lesser groupset than yours too...

But if the tolerances on my particular Defy's BB are quite wide then I'll experience similar problems even with a new BB... Maybe even worse?

Good! They are just a screw so can work themselves loose, especially on a shifter which has quite a bit of sideways force/movement!

ah right, yeah I have the ultegra disk synapse but it's a road bike and way too nice to commute on and leave locked up outside work. Just looking for a 2nd do it all bike really, something that can get abused.

I've got a soft spot for Kona's as had about 4 of them over the years :p

Not necessarily, your BB might just be knackered unless it's made noises since day one? If it has then there are somethings you can try to prevent squeaking, like Loctite.

Gonna go with Fulcrum Racing 3s with the GP 4000s IIs from Merlin - seems like a great deal - just over £300 with the extra 10% off.

Hi all

Does anyone have any experience selling higher price (would be looking around £1500) road bikes? I've got a di2 Scott Foil that I've barely used that I might offload but I'm not too convinced on ebay and the like.
