So I decided to take my Dad's old road bike, it's quite retro (probably 20-25yrs old) and needs a fair bit of work but I'm willing to put in the money, it'll be mostly sentimental as he passed away a few years ago. Here it is :)

Obviously you're all too tall :p

:p It's quite a common complaint to be honest. It's not as bad for me compared to some people as my legs are a little bit long for my height.
All three of them, aww yeah.

I did it, 17.4miles infact.

I know it's not much to some, but i set a target of at least 15 miles today and beat it by almost 2 1/2 miles. My ankle didn't hurt as much as i expected it to. I can feel it now though, next target is 20 miles.

Good work :) Are you doing rehab/stretching/foam rolling exercises with your ankle? (I'm not sure exactly what your problem with it is).

Thanks to the wonders of local road names, this evening's ride has a segment called "Faster you ****" (**** Lane, where **** is a lady of ill repute, or more pertinently the dross you are left with after refining coal) which is soon followed up by "You plank" (Plank Lane).

Haha I don't live to far away from said Lane but fortunately not on it!

Strava security zone means I am not logged on any of those segments. But if I were, it would be me with the koms, obv.

You can get around that if you aren't starting/stopping your ride at the time. Like, if you rode a couple of miles from your house, say down to the a580 near Haydock or something, and then rode back and rode up **** lane to the marina by the flash, and then rode back home then the segment would register. Like the security zone only applies if you're starting or stopping in it, but passing through it is fine.

Nice, i had a Holdsworth Electra MTB back when i was about 14, so about 24 years ago. I loved it. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

It actually feels pretty fixed now, haven't had time to look after it, had to just man up and work on it for the last 3 days.

Crotch free video of todays ride ;)

Any suggestions or recommendations for a road bike tyre?

I have conti's on at the moment GP 4000's or something to that effect, whatever came with the bike when I bought it used.

I've ridden about 1,800 miles with a fair few of them on the turbo and it could probably do with replacing.

My LBS were recommending the Schwalbe tyres, can't say I'd ever heard of them before. With the colder season in the not too distance future I wouldn't want to chew up a new tyre that isn't too hard wearing on the turbo.

I did spot some Schwalbe turbo tyres in the window of a hardware store recently heavily reduced at £5 a piece but I don't have a spare rear or cassette to be chopping and changing. Maybe it's worth trawling e-bay? (I usually turbo for about 60-90 minutes in the week, in the winter I expect this to double or tripple).

Don't want to spend the earth as whilst it's a hobby I don't want to sink too much cash in to it :) thanks.

GP4000S IIs are good tyres and well recommended. Conti 4Seasons area similarly well regarded. Pro4Endurance V2 would be my recommendation as they're cheaper and I'm a massive P4 fanboy :p

Schwalbe Marathon/Durano and..some other model are also regarded as good. They tend to be heavier but very bomb proof.

Don't be tempted by anything with the word "Gatorskin" in the name.

It's probably worth picking up a very cheap spare rear wheel to swap out for your turbo yeah. Any decent tyre you put on a wheel will be quickly ruined by a turbo, especially as regularly as you use it.

i found gatorskins very slippy compared to some of the others i have used.

I did quite like the spesh armadilo for being hard wearing and puncture resistant. They are quite heavy though.

for a turbo i would just buy a 'turbo' tyre they are very hard wearing on the rollers.

I found Durano S to be decent for all round riding, but don't expect miracles in ride quality.

I've just started running a P4E on the back and a P3 on the front (as Decathlon only had one P4E in stock, boo) and first impressions are positive.

Didn't know about this until today:

The Program ....about Lance Armstrong and the outing of his doping.

Looks promising I just hope it's true to the story and not all 'Hollywood'.

I'm going to get an exposure for the front (using a Lezyne at the moment)

Which Lezyne have you got and what did you think of it?

Good going! Don't worry too much about the distance, just keep riding! Admittedly I had 'targets' when I was starting out, but what really improved my riding was finding a local loop I liked and then just riding it as regularly as I could! My speeds increased and when it came to pushing the distance up all I did was decrease my speed (pace myself rather than pushing), I still do this for longer 50+ mile rides as I know I can ride ~30 miles pushing myself.

Welcome, but I think if you're new to cycling and really want to get into riding then buying a new bike would be a better option to start with, you could then rebuild your dads frame into the bike you want as time goes on and your experience grows. It looks like it needs quite a bit of work and money to make it rideable!

Like the security zone only applies if you're starting or stopping in it, but passing through it is fine.

Worth knowing, great tip, thanks! :D

Fork-gate - Full refund from seller, and he has not asked for the damaged forks back. So, looks like I will have an nice bit of wall-art :D

Ordered a more expensive fork, without disc mounts this time, and a chunkier bottom profile.

Hopefully be here by weds. Which will be good as I have the headset in, and all the other bits needed to put it together :)

Just need my brother to return a stem he borrowed, and thats everything!

Any recommendation for cheap but ok road SPD shoes?

Saturday was a washout - rained all morning then got sunny, so decided to go out for a cheeky ride... just as I was about to set off it got very dark and then we had a lovely torrential downpour complete with thunder and lightning. Glad I didn't go out.

Yesterday was lovely but windy. I had to run some errands at an equestrian centre about halfway along my planned route, but ran out of time because of dodgy curry the night before I was 50 mins late in starting :(
Had to cut out about 5 miles from the middle part of the ride... ended up doing about 10 miles extra on top of what I planned, which was kind of a mistake. It got somewhat windy towards the end of my ride and most of the middle > latter part was straight into it, so I flogged myself trying to keep some kind of pace up.

I added in a couple of extra hills, just because - which again were a stupid idea.

But quite pleased with it overall... new (ever so slightly) most miles ridden...
Slowed to a crawl on a couple of uphill bits, which was VERY annoying.

Treated myself to a new saddle, Charge spoon stealth edition to replace by 3 year old Richey which has developed a very annoying creaking sound from where the rails fit into the back of the saddle.
