Is 105 worth the money when upgrading from Sora? Can be had for around £270 im finding. I were contemplating Ultegra but im not paying the extra £150 for it, if it could be had for about the same price id have it lol, well if its worth it. I dont know which to upgrade to.

Also 11/32 or 11/28? Average climbing is 1000ft per 9/10 miles every ride pretty much as a minimum. Currently riding 9sp 11/32.

Im going to be giving the bike a service around April time ready for the summer so I have time to shop around.

Cheers,

James

I rarely use my 32 ring but a few times on very steep sections I've been glad it's there! cough.. Whitedown Lane... cough..

There are some hills here which I know I'd struggle with without it if I'm honest. Some pretty good 10-20% climbs around here that I like to hit every now and then..

28 has been enough for anything I've hit so far... Mind you, 100 feet per mile sounds pretty ridiculous, so I'd sympathise if you wanted to make your life a bit easier!

And yes, I reckon 105 would definitely be a good upgrade from sora. 2 extra sprockets, better shifters, better mechs, lighter, under bar cables. It's all good. Current 105 has an excellent reputation. I'm saving up to upgrade my Tiagra 4600 to 105.

One of my routes is 1100ft in 6.5 miles lol

I've done 600 miles this year. I'm aiming for 4-5k. I'm thinking an upgrade is worth doing but to what I'm unsure about. I want di2 if I'm honest but I ain't paying for it lol id rather get 105 or ultegra.

How much you seeing 105 going for brand new with BB?

Will 11-28 make it more difficult then? If I'm honest I might get 11-28 if that's the case.

When I get 105 I'll be getting it from chainreactioncycles with 10% British Cycling discount, which brings it down to £270, I think. If you're not in BC, Evans have it for a decent price, and wiggle have it for £280. Merlin I think also have it for about the same.

I'd stick with 28 myself, but I average less than half your climbing per mile, so I'm not the best person to ask!

I'm thinking CRC with the BC discount too. Reputable seller and a decent price at £270.

I'll await advice from the climbers on weather to get 28 or stay with 32 :)

Cheers for your advice buddy!

Just to chime in on 105. I upgraded from Tiagra to 105 when I bought my Tarmac. The difference in shifting was definitely noticeable. 105 feels incredible.

I think 11-28 is fairly standard in 11 speed now. If you ditch the granny gear you'll get better ;)

105/ultegra mix here. Brakes are a better on ultegra. 28/32 would depend on how steep. I'd get very annoyed with hills if I had your climbing every single ride. I'd settle for 28 think I only used my 28 a handful of times on sa Calobra corners last week. 32 gives too big gaps elsewhere.

Ps that's with a 52/36 up front.

I went from 9 Speed Tiagra to 11 speed 105 last year. The extra 2 cogs on the back made a massive difference - always having the right gear at my preferred cadence (90+)

I run 11-28 cassette 95% of the time but for hilly rides - Peaks, Wales, I change it for a 11-32. Using with a compact 50/34.

My winter bike has a 12-25 cassette and I was stuck in the big ring for a month on it. I live in the Highlands.
You ladies need to embrace your inner Belgian.
It's all the leg pressing I do, clearly your squats don't work dudes....

You are wrong. Lighter is better because peloton, because strava and because Fabio Aru

You are wrong. Heavier is better because cobbles, because power and because Cancellara :p

lol

What are people's take on electrolyte tabs here for water?

I am quite a sweaty rider, and currently on the turbo on the morning a work up a good sweat. I don't need the carbs as I'm getting breakfast straight after. But I sometimes feel that my salt levels are a bit low. Anyone got any suggestions?

12-25 on my turbo but on a bike where I'm riding in the real world 11-28 :p

Don't you weigh like 1lbs? Slightly heavier than SoliD?

High5 tabs do the job and are about the cheapest outside of Wiggle-branded/etc (and though I prefer the taste of the Wiggle orange ones they leave a weird brown oil/film on the bottle). Personally when I'm on the turbo I sip (gulp if I'm honest) a bottle of it to keep me hydrated.

I am currently 60.8kg but following this strict vegan sawdust and air diet I hope to be down to 1lb for race season. The plan is to be blown up climbs like a butterfly instead of having to actually pedal.

Edit: lots of complaints about those adapters - I think I'll dismiss that as an option.
I nearly bought a set to put on my new shoes to continue using SPD when commuting... Read a few reviews and thought better of it!

What's keeping you to your shoes? Looking at Look/Speedplay means you're looking at £70+ for a set of good entry pedals, obviously multiplied by how many bikes you'd need them for...! I guess what I'm trying to say is... Don't let your shoes dictate your pedals!

I recently switched from SPD to SPD-SL around a month ago and although it took me a week or so to get used to (spent 2 years with SPD) I've found them ok. I have probably 6-12 unclips for my 4.5 mile commute and probably only get the wrong side once, hardly ever need to glance down and I'll quite happily pull away from stationary with my pedal the wrong way before rotating when clear.

If your shoes are your limiting factor then I'd say to look at Speedplay as they seem to have adaptors for many bolt setups. Many shoe manufacturers
seem to also make adaptors for using Speedplay, you then shouldn't get weird shoe/adaptor/cleat compatibility & fit issues. They also look cool as funk! ;)

But I don't life for be sad, no.
:D

and because Cancellara :p
Who?
:p

Is 105 worth the money when upgrading from Sora?
Yes! For the increased number of gears alone! :)

Have well worn Tiagra/Sora on my old carrera and the shifting is iffy at best after less than 1500 miles. I noticed a huge difference to the 5800 on my Defy! The mrs recently bought an Avail 5 with 2400 (Claris 2015) and even though it's new the shifting is noticeably rougher than 105.

I would say to stick to 11-32 as you have lots of hills around you, going to 105 will give you a bunch more gears anyway. Although if you're not 'bailing out' into 34*32 when climbing 20% (or more) then you probably could handle a 11-28. :)

So I'm sitting here waiting for my bike delivery from Canyon, what happens?

UPS update: "The street number is incorrect. This may delay delivery. We're attempting to update the address."

Call UPS "Yeah there wasn't a street address on the package"

I guess they just put my name and 'London' on, hoping it would somehow find the way to me
