Road Cycling

6 hours is a fairly good estimate, my ride on saturday was just short of 40 miles and took me a few mins short of 3 hours. Admittedly I was probably on slower roads with possibly more elevation?

I'd expect you to be slightly faster than me (as you've done more longer distance riding) but pacing yourself (and holding back for the others) would probably put you at a similar pace to mine! I imagine you'll have a food stop somewhere in there too? (I didn't) :)

We'll be stopping every 20 miles or so. We're setting off from Liverpool about 9am, stopping in Warrington somewhere, which will be about half ten, then getting to Manchester for lunch. That takes care of about 40 very flat miles. After that, we've got 45 hilly miles to Sheffield, and we'll be taking a break part way. The plan is to get to Sheffield for half five, and the projected average speed is 15mph. The low average speed takes care of the fact that a) we'll have a lot of slower riders with us and b) 4 of the riders are spending the entire month doing over 2000 miles miles cycling round the entire country visiting every office in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands

I've taken my current KMC off a couple of times for cleaning and will remove the ML/QL when disposing of the chain. Will save me buying any spare links in future?!
usually the instructions when you buy a chain that comes with a quick link etc say they should only be reused something like 3 x before you should replace them.
I'm sure there's people on here that take their chain off and on to clean it all the time though??

6 hours sounds like a very low estimation considering the stops then! Fingers crossed you'll make up some time on the flat run out in the morning and be able to have an early lunch!

You weren't tempted by the 2000? ;)

Apprentice from my work is cycling from Paris to Yorkshire over this weekend (well 4 days starting on the 30th) with his brother and a bunch of others. He only got into cycling in September (:o) and only got a road bike in Feb! () He's done a few days of 80 mile rides but not back to back, last weekend he was going to try and do 2 days of 60 miles but talking to him I get the impression he's going to struggle once on the 3rd & 4th days. Total distance is around 260 miles. He's young though (20's) and with a big group I'm expecting him to complete it. Two big days of 80 miles at the start only leaves 100 miles for the last 2 (using my rough maths) ;)

Would love to try something like that one day but to be fair my legs are feeling the 40 from saturday still - after only ~15 miles since in the last 2 days of commuting (and rest on sunday) lol :D

I think the 10-speeds don't have a 'limit' although the 11-speeds do. I'm betting there's no huge difference between them so it's just to get more people to change their QL's more often. After refitting mine twice I can see how they may wear out, I wouldn't be surprised that after 4-5 times it'll feel loose enough for me to replace it. That may almost be the life of 2 chains (and get a 'new' one with each chain anyway!)! ;)

A pretty flat 27 miles this evening. The headwind on the way out was absolutely ridiculous, and I had to keep telling myself that it would be worth it for the tailwind on the return leg. Sure enough, lots of PRs on the way back, including averaging 18.7mph on a 6.4 mile segment. That's a real segment, none of your hundred yard dashes.

I'm planning to get out again on Thursday, to take me over 1000 outdoor miles for the first 4 months of the year. Now that the evenings are getting better I'm hoping I can really start piling the miles on - I'm aiming for 400 in May, and then probably the same or more each month until August or September.

I'd like that :p

No riding for me today. Worked 8 - 8, which sucked. Hopefully claiming the time back on Thursday afternoon for a nice ride. If the weather sucks I'll just wait until next week and get it back then.
