It's an organised event so there's a feed stop every 30 miles or so. I might just enter on the day if there's space if I'm feeling up to it.... I don't have to do the full route I suppose.

If you've done a metric before it's not a huge jump to do 100 - definitely something that will hurt but not something that you can't do. You'll need to get a few more long rides in beforehand though.

Despite the abundance of feed stations I personally would take my own pack of flapjacks or the like.

Just bit the bullet and ordered a pair of Assos T Fi.Uno_S5 bibs from their factory outlet!

I was looking at the Neo_Pro (new s7 ones) but people said they preferred the S5s, partly because the s7s have that stupidly low cut waist front panel. If they fit well, I might have to buy a second pair!

The main difference is the need for food. I can do a metric with no stops just drinking energy drink and maybe eating a bar at the lights. However, I'll be in a bit of a state the rest of the day because my body will crash. Anything more than that and I have to pile in the food or I'm ruined and still on the bike...

Absolutely agreed. Anything above about 50 miles it's really important (for me at least) to eat food in advance of feeling too hungry/feeling like cack.

£77 when I got them :D I'm returning a set for that price, Contemplating swapping to get a replacement in Medium! Anyone want a set of free aero (non kit) before I send them off?

If you're swapping size you'll need to return them to retain the sale price mate, with Wiggle anyway (as they're now not on sale). What size/colour are they otherwise, Large/Black?

honestly, as an elective upgrade it isn't really worth it to make such a relatively small jump.

Get the khamsins well and truly worn out and then buy something like this

Even at the upper end (£400 of my budget?) With the Khamsin's weighing 1800g+, normal depth and standard spokes would I not see much difference going for a deeper, aero and lighter set?

I know the bearings replaced in my Khamsin's were better quality than the originals they came with (which only lasted ~2200 miles), but am I realistically expecting them to last at least 5000 miles before I need to repair something else on them? I'm not sure what else will wear out in the first 10,000 miles of a cheap wheelset like these? Freehub? Bearings cost me £35 last time as I got the LBS to do them due to time constraints. I'm not adverse to spending money on them but is there any point if the money would be better spent on a replacement set (and then these khamsin would last several winters, rather than a couple)?

I know they are the C35 and you are looking at the C24 but you are lighter than me.

Good experience and info, but I think I need to look at the C35's after Amp's experience below. I'm 80kg :)

I have the RS81 C24s. I wouldn't recommend these. I use them as summer wheels only and after a year the lacquer bad flaked off in many areas and they rub badly even with brakes a fair distance from the wheel when standing up. I weight less than 80KG typically 76Kg in the summer. (6ft tall)

Ok thanks for info, that removes them from my listing as the last thing I want is a flexy set! ;) I generally run 'fast' brakes so really need a stiff rim and one that will remain true to avoid any rubbing. I weigh a little more (around 80kg, although down to 75kg last late summer/autumn) and I do put out high power when hitting many of the short climbs scattered around here.

Yeah, I did that on the last "big" ride... with some gels too. I can't remember if I ate them all. I definitely had one before the big white horse bank or kilburn bank or whatever it's called. That's 25% for about a mile. Nothing like that on this ride as far as I know.

I'll certainly be in no rush to finish, it's just time in the saddle that I guess concerns me. Only did about 2 hours last week on one 24ish mile ride (was slow and cold) and I did feel it a bit.

To those who own the dhb ASV Windslam Roubaix jersey:

With a baselayer underneath, does this get too warm for a morning weekend ride? As if the sun was shining, but it's still a bit chilly.

It'll get better to be honest. Just get a few long (they can be slow) rides in beforehand and maybe try to do a bit of core strength and mobility work as that can help a lot with comfort when riding.

Just get some Chinese carbon wheels with aero spokes. Less than £400 by some way and likely better than anything you can buy locally for that price.

My bearings are still going strong 8,500 miles in. I've had one spoke break. My front rim is now damaged though and needs replacing (happened at about 8k miles). I ride on pretty terrible roads though.

Has anyone ever had a problem with their rear wheel coming out of the drop outs after pushing away hard? I've had it happen several times now, despite the skewer being done up really tight! I suspect the skewer it's not the shimano one that came with the wheel

Had it when a QR I had was damaged and not done up very tight - when done up it wasn't flush with the dropout so not much holding it to the frame. It's worth cleaning your dropouts and QR as grit/muck in there can cause a bad 'connection' between the 2 - check the 'teeth' you'll find on most QR's, if the surface feels very smooth (or it has no teeth) then it's just never going to hold that well. Paint coming away from the frame can also cause it, there should not be any actually on the part where the QR 'clamps' but some frames have paint there which will come away. I also couldn't get mine that firm when using the QR brackets on a set of mudguards which was one of several reasons I fitted them to my mounting points.

Meh, the miche ones that came with my handbuilt wheels do up stupidly tight.

The Giant ones are tight, as are the campagnolo. The only 'Shimano' comparison I have were Sora/Tiagra 4600 ones off a cheap Carrera. They're all equally as strong/tight/grippy.

Ok people,
There's a 100 mile Vale of York sportive thing in Early April that I'd like to do. I'm unfit. Can I get fit enough in about a month? It's pretty flat, as it's the VOY... but there's 4000 ft total climbing in it with a couple of hills. Am I stupid to attempt this given I've not really been on my bike much since November.

Before you commit you really need to get out and do a 50/60 mile ride - if you really really struggle then the 100 is going to be too much. It'll be hard work regardless but if your body can cope with the strain of 50/60 then realistically you can stretch yourself to the 100. It'll hurt like hell but I would say possible.

Absolutely agreed. Anything above about 50 miles it's really important (for me at least) to eat food in advance of feeling too hungry/feeling like cack.

Totally, I've read before about eating something every 20 mins, even if it's just a bite of an energy bar. The 100 miles is going to take you (realistically) over 6 hours so you need to work towards stamina over multiple hours rather than power. The only real way to do this in a short space of time is to get used to riding 60%+ of that time, rest then almost 'overfuel' yourself on that particular day. You won't be breaking any speed records as your power levels will be low, but your stamina should allow you to finish it!

Roady I've not returned either bibs, as I may swap sizes now you have pointed out how much of a bargain they were. :D

Mine have done about 1500 miles I reckon, still fantastic, 1510g total including skewers, with 50mm aero. Going to Majorca with them and hoping I don't die :P

I'm sure you could get a chain and keep it until you need it.

True. I do actually need new cleats, so I'll add those instead :D I'll cancel the other order later on, and sort these out.

Might get that ASV Windslam top from Wiggle too. Seems to be a good buy, and I need to start my outdoor training for LBL!

If you're riding long distances I try and eat 300+ kcal per 10 miles as according to my PM I usually burn 35-45 kcal per mile unless I'm riding with someone super slow. For someone a little lighter and/or slower I'd probably still go for 300 per mile as in addition to the kcal burned cycling you burn plenty just by being alive.

Just never go down the hills and you'll be fine :p

Euch. Sometimes being short is a pain for shorts.

I'm still losing weight, so do I go with my current waist size (84cm) or do I go lower, given that it's lycra and it stretches anyway!

IIRC yours are not totally 'unbranded', so any particular brands you would recommend/avoid?

Same as above, brand/make? Don't brake when decending and you'll be fine! ;)

Liege Bastogne Liege?! :o

Good info :)

Zombie riding ftw! ;)

As you're still losing weight, is it having much impact on your waist? If so I would hold off spending ~£100 on Assos shorts which are not going to fit you once the warmer weather arrives...! ASV windslam is great too! I even messaged them to ask if I could have it at the same price as last week (£42) and they gave me a £6 refund! :D YMMW.

My wheels are completely unbranded. My frame is a Flyxii one.

Essentially I'd recommend one of the sellers on Aliexpress that has been around for a long time and appears to offer the best warranty (message them through the site to confirm).
