Was it this? Looks like it's no longer available. Has it been replaced with something else? I don't think I'd mind spending £200+ on a nice, breathable, wind and rain jacket. Mind you, I tend to try and avoid riding in the wind and rain :)

She looks great mate :) How easy is wrapping the bars? Since I scuffed mine, I really should re-do them...

Really very simple bud, GCN have a good video on YT actually, which I watched AFTER I taped mine. Would have made the figure of 8 a bit easier if I watched it before, as I messed up one side! Not an issue though I have plenty of tape left (Red Fizik and some more white) and I plan on re-cabling my shifter inners and outters at some point so I will replace it again at that point..

Ive done squash rackets before so kinda knew how the material would handle as its very similar.

Take your time and its quite easy any enjoyable.

If you are willing to spend £200 + look at the Gore Shakedry an excellent jacket!

I’m really happy with my Castelli Idro and think it was £150 or so in a sale. It’s Gore Shakedry which is very breathable for something so waterproof. The Rapha Pro Team rain jacket is the same material and a bit nicer if you can hold out for one of the 25% off codes or keep an eye on eBay.

Ha ha, cool, I'll check that out, thanks.

Is that this? They all seem to be sold out, bar the orange, which is probably the only colour I wouldn't want. :( Where do you get the codes from?

I know Casteli come up a little small. How do Gore and Rapha size? I would normally go XL I think.

It’s the Pro Team line so sizing will be similar to Castelli (I usually find Rapha is cut a fraction bigger but not enough to go for a different size).

The codes come up on the website from time to time, I don’t think they give out any secret ones. It looks like they might have a sale coming up soon too.

I'm planning a ride from Worthing to Chelmsford. I have three route options:
1) Go right through the middle of London
2) Skirt around M25 clockwise (via Hemel Hempstead direction)
3) Skirt around M25 anti-clockwise (via Sevenoaks direction)

I've done option 3 before and it was nice, but crossing the Thames on the ferry at Gravesend was a bit of a pain, and it will be worse currently as there's less sailings and reduced capacity, so I could potentially be left hanging around for a couple of hours if I don't get there on time or the first sailing is packed.

Option 2 is quite a lot more distance, probably too much for me.

I'm pretty sure there's not going to be a nice route through the centre of London though is there? Anyone done a similar route before?

Wow that has aged fast. That's your 5800 rings on 6800 cranks if I recall? What was your previous? Still I wouldn't expect that to lead to skipping gears. My old cheap FSA was cheese and looked like that, but didn't skip gears... Just sounded rough whenever I put a new chain on it!
Yeah 5800 ring on 6800. It looks weird but I'm beyond caring about that on this bike. It's done near enough 50k miles! :D

I blame the winter. It was wet wet wet. Maybe didn't clean as much as I should but I'm still surprised for it to be quite this bad. I'm pretty sure I've got the old 6800 ring somewhere (you know just in case it's ever needed when it never will be). I'm curious to compare the wear.

I swapped my original 6800 ring at something like 35k miles.

Unfortunately there isn't really a nice route. The west side from Surrey is ok but as soon as you get through Richmond Park and into Putney area it's not particularly fun. If I'd done Option 3 before I'd probably opt for Option 2. I've done the majority of that in dribs and drabs. You could check out the London Revolution route as it would use fairly similar roads.

What day and what time are you riding? I like riding through London around 7am to 9am on a Sunday... but outside of that, no, it's not so nice :(

Thanks, I've added a 'Rapha' alert on HotUKDeals... maybe i'll get notified if a sale starts. I've also registered on their site and added that to my wishlist, so again, maybe they'll let me know if there's a sale.

Great news about the Kinesis then, I guess it's just in one of those type of sweet spots of frame design, I can't think otherwise how you would think it performs close to the R5... Then again Cervelo haven't really done anything with their general geometries and designs for many years. Very much 'why fix whats not broken'!

i've done most of my miles for 7 years on a T2, predecessor to the T3 with essentially the same geo. I'm frequently fairly underwhelmed by other stuff i try. I may build some fancy wheels and put posh tyres on it now it's retired from commuting

wrapping bars is one of my least-favourite jobs. it either goes perfectly first time, or you redo it 6 times, hate it every time, go for a cup of tea, come back and do it perfectly first time.

I really enjoyed it!

Ill let you know how it goes next time it needs doing, i might have changed my mind on it then!

Off topic, anyone have experience with notifications on elemnt bolt with android phones?

Calls work for me but SMS notifications will NOT show up not matter what troubleshooting i do.

the apps have ALL permissions correct, tried repairing the devices etc, even tried a different default SMS application, but it doesn't work.

The only SMS message that i have managed to get to show on the head unit, is one that was an auto authorization SMS sent by the google messages app when turning off "use wifi when possible" option and turning it back on.

Rather annoying as its one of the main reasons i got the device to see SMS messages in case the misses sent one whilst riding!

So tonight will be the first ride in almost 2 weeks and I am really looking forward to it!

Nothing compared to all of yours but she will do me for now!

Hope you had a good ride. Still a good looking bike and good work on that tape! My first attempts did not look that good! :D

Although white tape, not for long once you puncture/have to handle a chain while at the roadside...! trolololololo ;)

Yeah no longer available, I picked one up second hand for £30 and am impressed even though this ones quite worn. The Idro is the replacement as mentioned, but also as mentioned there's other options. The 'eVent' fabric of mine has largely been replaced by 'Shakedry' on the comparable jackets like the Idro. Anyone able to comment any difference in breathability?

I'm always dubious about the various 'DWR' coverings as know most of them don't last more than a year or two maximum but have been quite impressed by this one. Jacket is several years old and well worn before I got it. Castelli waterproofing on their 'Nanoflex' warmers is poor, I've found the one on Sportful NoRain to be better (but still not great 2-3 years on), just wondering if Shakedry is similar/better. I don't tend to wash with Nikwax anymore as didn't really notice much difference when I did.

Wrapping bar tape is a bit of an art, but a good skill to learn. It's also worth either getting good quality/thicker tape or some really cheap stuff for your first attempts to you can re-do it. I quite enjoy doing it but am a bit too much of a perfectionist to get it 'perfect'... Can totally tape & wrap a side pretty good in 15-20 minutes now, but to get it to a standard I'm happy is another story...

If you are willing to spend £200 + look at the Gore Shakedry an excellent jacket!
Everyone I've spoken to with one and the few here with them seem to love them and rate them. Quality product. I'd probably have one if there was more than just a Black colour option... Although I did see one with colour on the cuffs, for me it needs something on the body. I dislike completely black outer layers I'll invariably be using in poorer lighting conditions/winter gloom/autumn low sun.

The Pro Team when I saw one the material didn't feel that breathable? Have you ridden the Idro in real rain? My Tempesta is good but I can see how a after a long summer shower once it's wet I could overheat before it dries out (if riding hard).

The one day I wear orange...!

Castelli do size up a bit small, quite a racey fit, but compared to what? I find Rapha shoulders tighter than Castelli although body tends to be a little shorter. Can't comment on Gore.

Doesn't look weird, just I recall you commenting about it before just couldn't remember if you'd swapped rings, or cranks over! Winter was miserable but wasn't that wet, for me the spring was wetter? But still not what I'd call a wet one compared to some a few years back...

Your original 6800 ring has 35k miles on it, possibly cleaned a little more, but I would guess that was 2+ winters? Then this 5800 ring with 4x less the mileage, less cleaning but only 1 winter on it? Would be an interesting comparison. You might still find some deals on new 6800 rings still floating around, but I recall when I was looking at cranks I ended up with R8000 as couldn't really see many 6800 left, or certainly no deals on them over the newer...

Will likely be around mid to late morning on a Saturday, so not rush hour, but certainly not a quiet time.
Any other crossing options that direction further out? Something to Southend? It's been quite a long while since I was last that direction...

Ha! Thanks, it was the cheapest tape on wiggle and i have three sets of tape ready to replace it with (another cheap white set, and 2 sets of red Fizik tape)

I've got a Gore C5 Shakedry (the 1985 Viz variant as I think a little colour in the jacket is a good idea if the weather is crap, even though I'd probably have DRLs on) in large. Fit is pretty much spot on for me (185cm,~80kg, ~100cm chest) - for my epic on Sunday I had a thin baselayer and a SS cycling jersey under it. Minimal annoying flappy fabric when flying down descents. I got it from Blacks during Black Friday in 2018 and paid £150. If you're not desperate for one, keep an eye on the different brands which produce Shakedry gear - my memory of reading the Cycletips article was

That's the beauty of Shakedry - there isn't an outer fabric which is DWR treated (which ultimately loses it's effectiveness):

CT.com said:
The problem is that those membranes aren’t tough enough to be used on their own. As a result, they have to be laminated to a more durable outer fabric — usually nylon or polyester, in the case of cycling outerwear. There’s also almost always an additional layer on the inside to provide better comfort against the skin and to promote moisture transfer. Those extra layers add needed substance, but they also slow the progress of water vapor through the membrane.

Making matters worse is the fact that the outermost layer usually has to be treated with a durable, water-repellent (commonly referred to as “DWR”) coating so as to keep the fabric from saturating. That coating helps prevent the membrane from effectively getting clogged up, but it only further limits breathability.

The magic of ShakeDry is that the membrane essentially is the garment; there’s an ultra-thin layer of polyamide textile bonded to the inside, but there’s nothing on the outer surface. According to Gore-Tex, ShakeDry marks the first time a waterproof, breathable membrane has been made sufficiently strong to be used in this way.

From: https://cyclingtips.com/2017/10/gor...who-makes-the-best-waterproof-cycling-jacket/

No outer surface does mean the fabric isn't as robust though, so not good for MTBing with a Camelback but perfect for road riding / running.

This is the jacket I have (as mentioned above) which has colour on the cuffs & drop tail:

https://www.gorewear.com/uk/en-uk/c5-gore-tex-shakedry-1985-viz-jacket-100408.html

IIRC, Gore couldn't colour Shakedry beyond black/blue initially, so the colour bits in the Viz jacket are traditional Goretex Active. More colours are possible in the future though:

In other news, went so hard/deep at the end of the Zwift WTRL TTT last night I was sick. Still felt sick later that night but drinking milk helped me to get to sleep. Woke up still feeling it and generally only subsiding gradually now... Whoops. 190 bpm!

Ahhh yeah, that's the one I'd seen. Good shout and reviews/links thanks. Will keep my eyes peeled for something with some colour, but really think the prices won't come down anytime soon for me to buy a new one! :o

Agreed! But with a red/orange bike, both red and orange are kinda odd to wear with it :(

Thanks, good info :)
