Road Cycling

Good info on the Praxis, thanks. I'd heard of them before but wasn't sure how they compared to Shimano. To be honest I'm coming from FSA Gossamercheese so anything in theory is going to be better...

Yeah 785 with unbranded 685 STi's on the Comp Carbon.

Very nice.

Yeah, the Praxis stuff is pretty damn solid. I think people rate their chainrings second behind Shimano :)

The Diverge is a nice looking bike. Have you managed to ride one yet?

Something about an SCS rear (specialized's own system) so hard to change for something else and the stock wheelset snaps spokes a lot. Though I think this was on the Alu £800 or so Diverge's and I'm guessing the Carbon one has different wheels?
Diverge A1(Sport) - £800(£950) - AXIS Classic Disc
Diverge Smartweld(Comp) - £1200(£1800) - AXIS 3.0 Disc SCS
Diverge Comp(Expert) - £2500(£3000) - AXIS 4.0 Disc SCS
Diverge Pro Carbon - £4500 - Roval Control Carbon SCS

I might see if they'll do an upgrade to the Rovals, but then all but the A1 have SCS...

That's good enough for me! Nope not ridden one, none of the LBS have them and only 2 of them stock Specialized, the biggest being Climb on Bikes (my fave shop anyway & a member of the club). They have a Roubaix and can get me the Diverge in, just if I do that I'm half committing myself to their prices and Evans' have such a deal on it at the moment I don't think they'll get close to matching it...!

To be honest I'd told myself that it's going to cost me £2000-2500 (RRP) so providing they're closer to the bottom end of that I'll be happy. I'll also have ~£90 worth of a fit thrown in 'free' with any adjustments etc (club guys tend to get it cheaper anyhow). I also know I had a fit for free previously on my Defy and that they'll do me another to confirm frame sizing before ordering the Diverge for £50 or so (think I know who to speak to and I might get the fee waived again!) ;)

If I 'save' pennies by going for Evans' (now they know I'm interested) I'll probably be paying £150 for a fit there, each bike lol :o;)

Impressive - distance and speed

Thanks :)

Any of you guys have any experience with cycling travel insurance? Any recomended companies/experiences?

I've used World Nomads in the past as cycling for any kind of distance counts as an "extreme sport" Didn't have to claim but they have an okay rep I think.

For bike insurance I have used Cycleguard (and claimed from them..they were fine for a UK claim) and recently moved to Bikmo. Bikmo have a very good rep but again I haven't had to test that personally.

17 rainy miles first thing to test my power meter. 171W weighted average, says strava, which is hardly earth shattering. It was interesting to see how the numbers move, and how you can cruise at a high speed for under 100W but then as soon as you hit an incline you need way more to sustain it, or when you pull away from the lights. It made me understand better what my legs feel when I'm riding. I powered away from the lights at one point and got over 700W (3s average) and then immediately felt exhausted. It helps to give some perspective on what I'm doing out there.

I did manage to slip when clipping in at the lights and smashed my shin into the pedal. Ouch. One day I'll learn that I can't clip in road cleats anything close to as quick as SPD ones.

Double the elevation though!

True. Some of that is accounted for by having moved to a Garmin instead of using my phone to record, sadly. I definitely go up a lot more hills than I used to though.

Not bad. How hard did you feel you were pushing? :) I found it a bit of an eye-opener at first in the same way as you. The numbers were not what I expected at all.

I could have pushed harder, but probably not by all that much. I'm tired and got a lot on today so wasn't going all out. I'll do that sort of route again as you can bang along large sections of it at pace as its flat and in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately there are roadworks in the middle of it which means about 500m is pretty lethal so you can't go very quick at all there.

At the end of the day the numbers were better than I'd feared, but worse than I'd hoped, but I'm sure that's the case for all of us ;)

Well..you're unlikely to see your best numbers on the flat anyhow. Go up some big hills :p

When I said not what I expected I was more talking about the massive jumps and just how low you can go to sustain speed on the flat :)

Gonna try some hills tomorrow. Even coming up the slight hill into Atherton I was hitting 300W at times.

But yeah, it is funny how it fluctuates. You can do like 100W to maintain 18mph or something but as soon as it ramps up a bit of the wind hits you, you have to do loads more, or it slopes down a bit and everything goes slack and all of a sudden you're doing... nothing.

Talking about power meters: Power2Max are doing a summer upgrade for owners of the original power meter. Upgrade to a Type-S for 345 Euros. http://www.power2max.de/europe/en/Produkt/favorites-en/power2max-upgrade-3/

@Roady

The Diverge price drop seems to be a thing across the country: Just received the latest copy of Cyclist magazine, and a shop called Wheelbase has the Diverge you saw for £1850 too. News models are obviously coming in very soon!

Yup. Once you get a handle on it pacing becomes much easier though.

I was really tempted by this but then remembered how bad our exchange rate is atm. Saved me from myself.

A fella on my first 'official' club ride this morning was sat on his top tube like Froome a few times today :o not sure if heroic or moronic...

In other news post ride brain derp but the HR module from my Garmin HRM through the wash with my gear. Seeing as it's seemed to survived being covered in sweat the last 2 years any idea if they are washing machine proof? :p It was only a quick rinse and spin cycle for 20 minutes. Ofc I could just try it but that would require moving ;)
