Road Cycling

Well after the 3 degrees winter commute this morning, cold & windy overcast 8 degree lunch, it's now fairly still wind, blazing sunshine and 15 degrees here. April go away.

I thought you were stronger than this for some reason! Still good power!
Cheeky :p
My FTP is 320w.
I find you can’t compare smart trainer times between riders, some are running super fast and some slower than actual real world speeds.
There are people in my club with times of 48mins, 51mins and 52 mins up the vitutal climb but I blow them away on real roads.

Physics...... ahem.

67mph is some going... kmph more likely? Either way an aero bike frame doesn’t add 20 to either, 2-5kmph max down a very steep long hill.

Seen cycling weekly posting up about issues with the Vector 3s.

Battery life, water ingress, power reporting very high spikes.

I ended up buying the Vector 3S last week, batteries were low on arrival but I replaced with Duracell.
I know some are experiencing problems with the battery cap, hopefully Garmin gets it sorted out!

Bit creative with their Zwift weight I suspect. Honestly I don't know why people can't just be honest.

If you ride 320w up there then with your weight you’ll be close to a 48!

Nope - none of those, The Allez just would not go above 47(ish) mph
Where you wearing an air brake? :p

-1 here this morning! Some ice/frost on cars but roads & cyclepaths clear. Sun was really warm though and with less wind around than yesterday it actually felt warmer.

Definitely can't compare! The only way to compare would be using the exact same trainers, in the same environment calibrated at the same time. Even then you may see as much as a 10% difference. Too many variations, even temperature fluctuation can cause large swings in accuracy on a single trainers data.

That too!

Anyone with any experience of baby trailers? Halfords have one on a deal for £90 (& BC discount?!) and from reading a few reviews it'll do for us as a starting point to figure out if it'll work to take mini^roady to childcare/nursery at this early stage (he's 7 months old and starts in 2 months time). Most of the recommended/best ones start at £400/500! :o

Most of them are not rated for infants.

Finally got around to reading that article, thanks for linking, really enjoyed it! Good to see that alu seems to have a future. It needs innovative brands like Cannondale & Specialized working with it, the small brands just can't innovate the same. :)

Most of the cheaper ones are not, they tend to start at 12 months+ when the real difference between them and the more expensive ones is a supportive seat for junior and solid floors. Both easy to do on a cheaper trailer. Reading most forums kids seem to fall asleep really easily (find that with car journeys too!) so the age restriction links to them being strong enough to support their head even when sleeping, if I fit a seat in there it'll make it more comfortable for him and can also support his head/neck.

We do have a bike seat, so will probably use that to start with until he's a bit bigger, but it's totally down to what the other half is happy with. Most accidents seem to be from kids in seats falling from height, not from trailers tipping over (several comments about kids still being secured asleep in tipped trailers when riding off road lol). :o

Hopefully we'll get him into the nursery we want - the whole journey will then only be 1 mile long with the stretch along the main road being 90% cycle path. If we don't get in there the nursery he'll be going to is much further away with only 2 of the 4.4 miles along cycle path. There is a wide 'pavement' along the busiest stretch of road she'll probably use instead as she'll be paranoid about cars to start with (& hasn't cycled for 11 months!).

I still need to figure out how I can use this as a partial excuse to buy a full sus MTB. I certainly don't want to be strapping the 10kg trailer with 10kg+ junior to the rear triangle of my carbon road frame. I'm fairly sure it'll eventually damage things as wouldn't imagine the frame is designed for drag stresses from that direction and I'd void my frame warranty!? It's obviously easy to justify a cheap front-sus or hybrid to use for the trailer that we can both ride (as we're not that different in height) but a full-sus would get used more. I'm basically not allowed 2 more bikes, but might be able to justify 1! ;)

She'll be riding him there in the morning, in theory on her alu framed road bike, then I'll be picking him up and don't want to use my old alu framed road bike, I want to use my Diverge! ;) :o

My race season (fixed wheel, outdoor velodrome, vets (40+) league) starts Friday this week.

I'm crapping myself!
Good luck! Saw your warm up hurricane session on Strava, your power looks good!

Hi all. in need for some advice here.

My disk breaks on my hybrid dont respond and stop the wheels well unless i press quite hard on it.

When i first got the bike, a slight tap on the breaks and you could literally fly off the bike.

Is there a way to adjust it and if so, how?

Here are some pics of the bike and its disk breaks

There's no way to adjust the force required but you can adjust the biting point in/out using a screw on the inside of the lever.
How many miles have you done? Could it need new pads? Also discs/pads could be contaminated with oil.

Good luck with it. Looking at your hurricane session, did you use your road bike? Only reason I asked was that your average power is lower than your weighted average and if you rode a fixed wheel then they should be pretty much the same I would have thought

Yeah that was a road bike session last night - it was stupendously windy and trying to break from the pack was the most pointless exercise ever, so we did a quick Italian pursuit where basically everyone was getting a nice bit of wind protection from the group to that was alright actually, then after that we just got the cones out and made some chicanes etc and it turned into a skills session.

Pointless trying to mash through 20 mph winds so kudos to the coach for changing the programme to recognise the headwinds were just killing people.

The most likely causes are :-

Contamination, need to clean disks, caliper and pads with disk brake cleaner. Use white kitchen roll and when it stays white everything is clean. Sometimes the pads just have to be replaced.

The pads are worn down too far. Once they wear so far they will contaminate your rotors as you get down to the adhesive that attaches the pads to the backing.

If the brakes feel very spongey they may need bleeding.

Is this a reply to me?

Anyways when I brake they make a sliding noise of some sort

Yes :)

Disc brakes will make a metallic scraping noise when you pull them on , this is normal but it is not that loud. If you find braking very poor or they sound like a gobbling turkey then there is something wrong.

Less likely causes are a leak from the calliper or brake hose, a buckled / bent rotor, the calliper is not aligned properly.

Made a bit of a mess of my left leg yesterday. Decided last minute to go up Streatley as I was right next to it after my route, they have single file traffic up around half way with traffic lights which aren't actually on but cars approach them as if they are as you can barely see them covered by bushes. Came up behind one and just stupidly didn't unclip despite barely moving, and by the time I went to do so, it was too late and I was going over.

I haven't adjusted the Ultegra pedals and they are so stiff to unclip, especially one side.

I spent about 1 minute with traffic on the road, just trying to unclip my foot while lying on the floor but couldn't do so. Had to take my shoe off in the end. Felt a right tit :o

Bike is unharmed apart from a small scuff on one pedal, but I stuck my leg out so it took all the fall. Took a load of skin off around my knee and shins which is sore this morning :(

Despite all that, I managed a 15 second PB :o:p
