Road Cycling

They're (for the most part) off the shelf bits from novatec and kinlin, which makes me feel like they're a bit strong price-wise. The build quality is obviously good though judging by the reviews and the customer service is by all accounts, excellent.

yeah I think they just make a few tweaks, the freehub has a steel insert to stop the alu tearing up, spokes are pretty good quality and the skewers are nice, also you get a free cap :p The freehub engagement is kinda average, I've had a few minor miss-engagements when really booting it going in to a steep climb. Best freehub I've ridden is the dt swiss star ratchet system, engages perfect every time.

The combo of the mason definition alu frame and the hunt wheels is fine on most rides but on super steep bottom gear max effort ones things start to get a bit spongy.

more tech issues with Sundays ride but was still a good ride.

4iiii disconnected 5 times needing the battery yanked and put back in to get it working again, should still be under warranty
chain dropped 2 times when going down on to the small chainring, never had this before
front disk brake started to squeal at random times on some pretty steep technical decents. Pads are 2 rides old and everything was spotless
bluetooth headphones kept glitching out

Current plan is to sell the Synapse and keep the Mason, then pick up a supersix evo as the light summer bike. It'll be rim brakes with a set of dt swiss pr 1400 dicut oxic wheels and some light spare parts I have. Should build up to just over 7kg.

I'm not saying it was easy or anything, it was definitely an effort! I just meant it wasn't particularly memorable. I actually don't think I'll be rushing back to the Chilterns. Similarly, Cheddar Gorge was a super hyped climb that I thought was picturesque in setting but the actual road climb wasn't interesting or memorable.

To be fair I think once you've cycled in Europe and ascended some iconic climbs like I know we both have (Sa Calobra, Coll Des Rates, Val de Debo etc). Most stuff in the UK will be underwhelming due to it's sheer duration or lack thereof :p

If you are down this way Small Dean Lane is very steep and very short but I'm sure it probably wouldn't even make it twitch for you

That is awesome! All suckers still solidly attached? I'd be quite concerned over the mechanism of the sunroof getting damage to risk that myself, but I guess you've mounted your bike there with no issues!

Sweet ride anyways, do love a white car! Just wish mine was that clean... ;)

Really should get some seasuckers, I don't have the option of a rear roof bar (small car problems!) so use a rear carrier and I'm not happy with the mounting & clearance :(

Yep, it's a pretty durable bit of kit.

You don't really ned to push particularly hard at all (depending on the curvature of the roof) but I can see what you mean. Being German it's pretty robust ;) You just have to remember not to open it :D

I'd recommend it. I took it to Spain for the hire car but didn't need it and will take it to Belgium when I visit Maxeh again in August. My seats fold but we'll drive out & ride together and I can't fit two bikes inside.

If you're ever traveling somewhere with friends or family and want to take a bike but aren't using your vehicle with fixed rails & bars you've got the potential to use any vehicle. Doesn't need to go on top either. Seen images of them on the rear of cars too but if you were ever rear-ended, RIP bike.

What's your rim width and what tyres? I was running GP4000sii's on Shimano RS81 (20mm wide rim) at 80 front & 85 rear. I found any lower than 80 at the front they really lost pressure quickly and I'd be topping it up weekly (annoying)! Am now running 90 rear as towing a kid trailer but will be swapping the tyres for something heavier and more grippy (I've found the front is very skittish with the weight behind, even with aerobars fitted).

Same as UT, Grand Sport Race and 17mm internal width rims. 85psi for the front seems to give decent comfort without any trade off in speed that I can measure.

Managed a 2:34 56 miler last week in a 70.3.
Why can I not ride like that outside of a race?!
I know it's purely mental, but odd thing is that during the race I feel relaxed and well within my comfort zone as I'm preparing for the run... Go out for a ride any other day and try and give it some welly and it just feels hard work and I cba :/

Advertise for some volunteers to ride just ahead and just behind you on non-race rides, jobs a good'un. ;)

I decided to venture out onto the road again (first time in 2 yrs since i crashed!) almost wish i hadn't now. Five minutes into the ride on the outskirts of Brechin i see 3 cyclists all standing about. I ask if everything is ok cos one guy looks like he's in pain, I discover its a client and two of his cycling pals so stop for about 10 minutes with them. Looked nasty, the guy couldn't lift his arm at all as he'd landed on it from a pot hole. I'll find out the full story at work tomorrow no doubt.

Just pottered about for a 9 mile ride to test out the new bike (first time on that as well since buying it 3 weeks ago!) Felt good being back out again however noticed the bike was quite twitchy, especially when i was one handed getting a drink. Felt a narrower ride than on the Triban 3. Needing to get used to the gearing on it as well stepping up (down) from 24 gears to 22. Nothing spectacular but its a start. https://www.strava.com/activities/1587357171

Headed South West for Z2 recovery today with plans to rendevouz with Steedie to watch him take a lay down half way up Streatley :p Hayfever was ravaging him so solo'd it.

Streatley is #24 so I was keen to see how it compared to #23 Whiteleaf which is my local lung buster.

https://cyclinguphill.com/100-climbs/streatley-hill/

5:00 dead with a 5 min power PR to boot, 388w.

I still think #23 is tougher, it is about 1/3rd longer and with a fairly sharp pitch round a 90 degree bend (whichever line you take) and more undulation finding a rhythm is trickier.

Ever tried this one Benny? https://veloviewer.com/segment/646100/Succomb's+Hill

Shame abiout the 4iiii, bad battery maybe or you think more critical? Pads/disc issue is probably just new pads. They need a ton of wearing in, just be cautious of cooking them when 'young' and not worn in. They'll fade quickly, so be careful! How old is your chain and anything changed recently (any tweaks to FD)? :)

supersix & dt pr 1400 will look & ride supreme! :D

All good info, they really are much more useful than bars & rack.

Ahh quite a 'traditional' width. You'll probably find any lower than 85 will lead to pinch punctures on most UK roads, although that's very situational and use specific. Try it and see, just make sure you have spares with you! ;)

Maybe you just ride better fatigued after a swim, yet with a little tapering in the week before? Then again isn't that the ideal situation - difficult training, yet peaking perfectly on race day so you feel like you could've gone harder? :D

I feel bad for you, 37c here the other day!
Screw that! 25-30 degrees is far far hot enough! ;)

It's all a start mate! Steady does it, confidence takes quite a bit of riding and time to build, yet seconds to lose. I'm still building mine back up slightly after getting run off the road a week ago, close passes make me twitch (had 2-3 since) where before they really didn't. I'm super nervous of my commute now and hearing a tractor behind as I'm convinced my luck is going to run out. They don't bother me anywhere else! Horrible feeling but nothing time won't solve.

Hope the guy you came across was all mostly ok, shocking state of many of the road surfaces across the UK, you really have to be careful. :(

One I used to do when living in Gloucestershire:

https://veloviewer.com/segment/6913771
Nice! Might have to go find that one as not a million miles from me (around 35-40), just a bit of a PITA to get there from the north. Might be why even the 5-6 riders I know from Ross & Gloucester area have not ridden it! :o

If we're segment % epeening I'll raise you my steepest local: Bredwardine Hill (but I think that 40% is inaccurate, it's 30-35% max) and then there's the local hill climb favourite: Capler.

But lets be honest, anything over 20-25% HURTS and with ramps like that in the middle of Haresfield you really can't carry speed onto them. They become a test of your threshold/anaerobic endurance at crazy high power levels & low cadences. I must get out and ride those two again as according to veloviewer I've not ridden them for far too long (2 years!) :o

What about Cob Lane? https://veloviewer.com/segment/825126

Anyone that does London to Brighton... it's rude to ignore this minor bump.
Minor! Looks quite meaty! :D

Sound's & looks.... sweary! Although a trail?

Mega ride, was it just a hunt of everything in the area with a gradient!? Didn't realise you'd been over this direction!

Great roads around there, but you missed an amazing climb out of Monmouth I did a month or so ago. Although you did Yat rock which is no joke! I've walked up it ages ago and have been meaning to ride it at some point. Chapeau!
