Road Cycling

Turns out I’m more organised than I’d thought. Got to my parents yesterday and this morning started loading my bike into the car only to check the saddle bag and see I’d disconnected both derailleur batteries and put them in a zip lock back with the charger :D

Not sure why exactly but last night I bought a 3D printed carbon fibre saddle from Aliexpress.

Wanted to try a different saddle size as I'm thinking mine may be the wrong shape but I didn't want to break the bank and they had been reviewed well.

How long til it splinters and forces its way inside of me? Taking bets now. Banzai!

Went for another Coffee Run from SE London to Esher - 96km round trip.

was good day out, happy with performance and got some great comments from thre group - i was the one most of the times at the back of the group a while back, not any more

And in another news, I've seen remittance for the cyclescheme.

So lets hope for new bike weekend :D

Sure i've seen someone else on here ordered one with decent success.

Do you upload measurements and it's made to measure your ass or is 3d printing just a fancy manufacturing method?

Haha for £50? Na it's just a 'fancy' manufacturing method. Though I've seen enough videos on YouTube and reddit/forum threads where people have had a lot of luck with them. I went for one from a brand called Ryet which can be found here though I went for the 143 size as I think I need a narrower saddle. Measured my sitbones and they came out at 120~ and they recommended adding on 20mm so I should be bang on a 143 width saddle.

I think the one I went for is based on a Fizik one but they have one called an EC90 which is also really well reviewed and is based on the Specialised Power saddle.

Should be here in a few days, apparently. My bike is stuck on the trainer until the spring now (we can't all live in Spain. Grrr) so it will be interesting to see the comfort difference on a trainer and if it does fail spectaculary at least I'll be at home!

Edit: This is the one I ordered

Anyone spotted many BF deals? I've not had much time to look today. But I've taken advantage of the Wiggle Sales the last couple of weeks a number of times to stock up on stuff. Some cracking deals there on things... Almost back to how Wiggle used to do sales! :D

You'll love the TraceR. I've a bunch of the earlier basic ones without some of the extra tech (inc REAKT). Really rate them. Probably have 5 or 6 of them! Gradually replaced all rear lights with them for myself and the other half, then also had a couple of extras I used on the kid trailer. So have spares and spares! Only got 1 of them which is probably the oldest and doesn't last for 2+ weeks of use on a charge (mode 2). That one must be 6 or 7 years old by now. So incredible lights for the money - even though they might seem quite pricy. Great build quality and reliability. I've taken one apart, looks fairly straight forward to change the battery in them when the time comes.

Although I have broken 3 of the rear brackets. They're easy to buy a replacement. The seat rail mount you have is good, but fitting is so tight you'll not be unmounting the light very often with it. Daily would be a chore. Took mine off when I changed saddle so I could mount saddlebag.

It's arrived and doesn't feel atrocious and 145g on the scales.

Will put it on the bike later today and try it out tomorrow. Will be interesting to see if it just breaks upon first use

Spent the last week out in Tenerife with the family and one of my partners cousins is a keen cyclist so we went out for a ride on the Friday when the weather wasn't quite so horribly hot. One of her friends sent us a nice route which made our lives really easy and the bike hire place was great. €30 per bike and we got carbon fibre bikes with 105 groupsets delivered to the hotel the evening before and collected after our ride. No idea how they make any money at all.

I was OK with the amount of climbing but I'm just not used to doing a massive long sustained climb. All the stuff around here is short and punchy for the most part and it was hard work at times. The descents were amazing though. I never get to do a 5k+ continuous descent. Twisty turny cliff roads where you can usually see if there is any traffic coming so you can take nice fast and wide lines most of the time.

I can see why people go on cycling holidays to the these places. The scenery was really nice in places but Tenerife is fundamentally a big rock in the ocean and I like greenery myself. Really glad I went out though.

When the boys are a little older I will probably take my bike out and head out early morning a few days in the week.

Well first ride with the Chinese carbon saddle was better than I thought. Turns out Carbon is very stiff when used as a saddle. Didn't think I'd notice but there is zero flex from the saddle when seated like none at all. My previous saddle, Selle italia superflow boost slr (what a mouthful) you could feel have a bit of give but not even half as stiff as this. Though I suppose carbon fibre is known for it's rigidity.

It was only a low effort endurance ride so I've not tried it in all scenarios but happy with it so far for £50. The 3D printed material on top gives a bit of cushioning but it's not exactly a pillow. Still very much a road bike saddle but with bibs it did feel a tiny bit more comfortable than the previous one but that could've been me searching for confirmation bias.

Have a sweet spot session tomorrow morning so that will give it another look. I did have the saddle a bit further back than I would've liked so i tweaked it after the ride. The fact it didn't crumble after the first ride was a win in my books. I was scared to sit on it despite it supporting up to 150Kg.
