Road Tripping in the USA!

9 nights of Road Trip is enough to do LA to Vegas, through Death Valley, into Yosemite National Park, into San Francisco and back down to LA provided you dont stay more than 2 nights in any one location and you realise its quite a bit of driving.

I'd probably just do one or two nights in Vegas, and head on up to San Fran.

One spanner in the works at the moment is that Tioga Pass - which is where you'd go from Death Valley to Yosemite - is still closed for winter. When are you going? It should be open any time now.

We fly in on 21st June, schedule at the moment is looking like.

21st June - arrive LA, pick up car, stay at candlewood
wed - 22nd June - Drive to Santa Clarita drop off eldest child with internet geek friends, head to vegas, arrive vegas at some point.
thu 23rd - vegas
Friday 24th - leave vegas
Tue 28th - san fran
wed 29th san fran -
friday 1st july - drop car back centre LA, 4 days in LA, meet up with spawn and her internet geeks
Tuesday 5th July - fly back home
wed 6th july - arrive home

So if we do goto vegas, then the Friday-arriving in San Fran is free, and is the Thursday coming back from San Fran to LA, ive allowed a stop so we are not doing this all in one day and can see some of the coast so im unsure where we will stop there, may meet up with Rich L for a pint that day.

Looks doable, but you don't need to spend that much time between Vegas and San Fran. You may want to but I'd rather have another day in Vegas or down in say Santa Barbara or Santa Monica. Something like the below would work.

thu 23rd - vegas
Friday 24th - vegas
Sat 25th - leave vegas and drive to Bishop/Mono Lake through Death valley.
Sunday 26th - Cruise up to Yosemite, drive around, walk around etc etc and stay over.
Monday 27th - Short drive to San Fran (3-4hrs)
Tue 28th - san fran
wed 29th - Leave San Fran in afternoon and drive to Monterey for stop over
Thursday 30th - Drive down PCH and stop over in Santa Barbara.
Friday 1st july - drop car back centre LA, 4 days in LA, meet up with spawn and her internet geeks
Tuesday 5th July - fly back home
wed 6th july - arrive home

Note: If you wanted more time in San Fran, then on SUnday 26th you could just drive from say mono lake stopover through Yosemite, do the stops and arrive in San Fran for mid-afternoon.

Ahh yes, forgot about that.

But with removing this day in Vegas you could say spend a day around Yosemite or even better another day in San Fran!

Awesome, Thursday 30th I'm working in Santa Barbara so will be around :D

(-Ad- I saw your thread too late and unfortunately I was in Bakersfield at the time - joy! Glad you had a good time though, Sandbar is our apres-work happy hour venue of choice. :p )

It's a shame you're stuck in LA for 4 days, I would probably extend the trip down by a day, stay overnight in SLO as Thursday night is the Farmers Market where the whole High Street opens up into a big open-air eat and drink-a-thon, then drive down to SB on Friday. That said, SB is $$$$$ to stay on a Friday night whereas Thursday should be much more reasonable.

Looks like a cracking trip though :)

No worries Rich, I still hate you for being able to go to Sandbar after work for drinks, it's a great place. Actually, the whole of Santa Barbara is amazing and I wish I could live there.

Goes off to sulk :(:D

I'd make the following changes.

Friday leave Vegas, do Death Valley, stay the other side. Bishop is well positioned.

Saturday is Yosemite Day. 2 hour drive from Bishop via Tioga Pass which should be open at the end of June, then head out in the evening and stay somewhere between there and San Fran. I chose Modesto, it was about a 1-2 hour drive from Yosemeite.

Sunday is San Fran day. Get up early and drive the long way into San Francisco. You can then enter it from the top over the Golden Gate Bridge after visiting a charming little place right before the bridge called Sausalito. You can also get fantastic views of the bridge from the Headland above it.

Then into San Fran for lunch - big plus here is that most of the on-street parking in San Francisco is FREE on Sundays. So park your car - I parked just a block from the crooked street (Lombard Street) and spend the rest of the day walking around San Fran.

Then it's hotel time. Now San Fran is cheap to stay in at the weekend and very expensive weekdays. If you don't drink consider staying out of town. I stayed in a town about 20 miles South. Sounds a long way but in reality it's 20 minutes in the freeway. Meant i got to stay in a Marriott opposite Sony North Americas HQ building for 60 quid a night. Edit: It was called Foster City.

If you do decide to stay out of town be sure to pick somewhere that doesnt involve driving over one of the toll bridges or you'll find your hotel savings eaten by toll fares!

Monday morning you can drive the car to a BART station and hitch the train into San Francisco if you feel you've more to see. Don't drive into San Fran on a weekday unless you want to pay eleven billion pounds to park.

You'll probably get owned for a hotel cost on the Monday night but hey, sometimes I guess its unavoidable.

Tuesday and Wednesday can be Pacific Coast Highway days. This part of the trip is unmissable. Take a lesuirely stroll down the coast stopping at Santa Cruz and spend the night at Carmel or Monterary - although Monterary will be cheaper.

Wednesday is the best bit of Pacific Coast Highway. Pay your small toll and do 17 Mile Drive. Takes you through some stunning residential areas, home of the super rich, and past the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, and also some nice coastline. After you finish 17 mile drove its onto Highway 1 and down through Big Sur. This is the absolutely epic bit with the jaw dropping scenery and fantastic bridges you see in all the pictures.

'Drive Highway 1 in a Convertible' is often found in '1001 places to visit before you die'. The Big Sur stretch is this part.

The first real civilisation after this part of the route is Morro Bay, a small town with a little cinema, a McDonalds, and a load of cheap motels. They are a bit trashy but they are cheap. Alternatively a bit further along is a city called San Luis Obsipo. Not a great area or a tourist hot spot but plenty of hotels. If you really fancy missioning it, you could probably make it to Santa Barbara but it might end up being pretty late.

If you don't decide to press onto Santa Barbara you'll find that between San Luis and Santa Barbara is a charming village called Solvang. Google it, all the architecture is Danish. Worth a quick visit.

Santa Barbara is lovely - past here it gets a bit urban in places and if you stick to the Pacific Coast Highway you'll go through the famous Malibu. Which is a bit crap. Then you'll end up in Santa Monica, which is pretty much LA.

This takes you to Thursday night.

Good post from Fox :). Picking up on some of his points:

In San Fransisco we chose to stay in the city, and went for the Handlery (Union Square).

However before heading down we went inland a bit and stayed at Sacramento and also Lake Tahoe.

Coming down the highway we stayed in Carmel (drove into Monterey for the day) and also stayed at Cambria (before Santa Barbara).

Tomorrow is the big day, very very excited. Will post some pics when I get back, again thanks to all who have helped me plan the trip, at the moment Im still leaving a chunk of it to chance which is part of the excitement :)

I got back from my own US Roadtrip a couple of weeks ago.

Started in Vegas, where I actually got married! Stayed there for just under a week with family and friends before the two of us headed of for 10 days of driving. Unfortunately there was no Mustang for us, we had hoped for a Dodge Charger but ended up with a Chevrolet Impala.

We went the opposite direction from Vegas, away from the coast into Utah and took in some of the National Parks around that area. Places like Zion, Bryce Canyon and Arches are unbelievable, the varieties of landscapes are staggering! From baking deserts to being snowed on at 9000 feet and back to deserts.

I'll probably do a more detailed post in the future, but I guess that'll be in GD as there won't be much car related stuff.

Headed to San Fran today, weather is going to be terrible though!

So far we have done Vegas, Tonopah, Reno (as my daughter didnt like the little towns, they scared her, so we headed to Reno for 3 nights to sunbathe which was a bit frustrating).

Glad to be back on the road, I love the driving, anyway, offski to SF.

Lucky mother lucker!

Enjoy it, It's an amazing trip.

Soo jealous, could really do with some margaritas in sandbar tonight, instead I'm going to the gym. Yay!

The weather being terrible is a purely relative thing though - even a dull day here is probably about as warm as many summers days in the UK. :p

I've just done a brief roadtrip for the past few days from San Francisco sort of area down to Malibu and back up via Santa Cruz. I hired an Eclipse Spyder to do it in (not sure why Mitsubishi are called Eclipse here) and aside from being quite pretty and a convertible I wouldn't be in any particular hurry to drive it again - it's not a bad car but it's not great either, it's not especially fast, it's not especially fun to drive, it's not hugely refined, it's just ok and with the top up the rear pillars seem exceptionally large so obstruct the view more than expected.

It's interesting but before now I'd always thought it was a bit of a waste that America has these huge freeways yet limits you to 55/65/70 (depending on where you are) but now having done getting on for a thousand miles on them I don't think it's quite so odd for a few reasons:
1) a number of the freeways I drove on are in pretty poor condition, maybe that's just the routes I chose and the rest are tip-top but as it is I probably wouldn't have been tempted to do much above the speed limits anyway.
2) American drivers - they're probably not much worse than UK drivers if at all but the fact that it's normal to have people overtaking from either side and changing lanes/veering across lane markings suggests to me that extra speed isn't going to help.
3) Maybe it's just because I was hiring a car but I didn't feel like I wanted to test it out quite as much as I would have with my own car.
4) It's quite possibly just the car but the autobox didn't make me want to go all out as I wasn't sure it would definitely change at the appropriate moment or at least not have a second or twos delay while it decided the appropriate response to me accelerating hard.

Further to point 1) if anyone wants to moan about British highways and the quality of them then I'd suggest taking a trip to California, it's eye-opening how good we've got it for the most part. If I've got any decent pictures I might put up a couple taken from the Pacific Coast Highway when I'm back in the UK.
