Road Tripping in the USA!

Can you get suitcases on the back seats of a Mustang convertible? Or is that asking trouble?

If you are getting a Mustang I'd recommend getting some soft duffel bags. However if needed you could get 1 large suitcase in the boot and 1 large suitcase across the rear seats with room for a few smaller bags in the boot.

7 days hire of a open top Mustang from Alamo in August 18.

Pick-up Las Vegas ----- Drop Off LA.

A stonking £857

That seems a lot. A month later than that we got 4 weeks for £100 more. Try booking through Virgin Holidays. I found it cheaper than the Alamo site and you get some freebies like a tank of fuel and extra named drivers.

Yeah every time I’ve rented a convertible, you go into the parking lot and it’s Mustangs and Camaros and that’s it! If the Mustangs are all gone if it’s anything like LAX Alamo just wait 5 minutes and they’ll bring another half a dozen back out!

The one time there wasn't a Mustang in the lot (in Seattle) I just asked and the guy ran out the back and got me one.

Never book specifically for a Mustang as they are just scamming people who don't know the system, book the standard convertible and you'll get exactly the same car.

Usually say Chrysler Sebring!
Whoops, Chrysler 200 then.

Over the past 5 years and roughly 10 car rentals across the entire west coast I've never seen anything other than a Mustang or Camaro in the standard convertible class. In each of these 10~ trips I've always been able to get a Mustang within 10 minutes of arriving at the depot.

Booking to guarantee a Mustang is just a money making exercise for the rental firms.

Well if anyone isn't too busy and wants to find a cheap convertible for me I would appreciate it :)

Collection - Las Vegas (Airport or Strip) on August 25th.
Drop Off - San Francisco International Airport on September 7th.

Best price I had was £620ish.

First website I checked (took 30 seconds)

Bizarre that that's nearly £200 cheaper than with Alamo directly. You can get Quidco cashback with Alamo, but that doesnt cover the difference at all.

I've only ever booked 1 US car rental directly with the company, my other bookings have always been with brokers so it's fairly normal. I've used Virgin Holiday Cars 3 times without issue.

I've booked with Hertz directly this time - cheaper than Alamo (even through Virgin). £600 for an Elite Standard SUV/Crossover (LR Discovery / Infiniti QX60) for 12 days. (Additional driver extra). £54 cashback too.

Interesting to see the different pricing structures of Hertz and Alamo. Hertz starts much lower but increases much faster. Alamo doesnt have much difference between many of the classes.

These observations are based on pickup from Chicago O'Hare.

Cheers, that's a bit better :)

I was using all the rental sites and comparison sites. Didn't think to use Holiday providers.

I'd Still check all the other websites listed in this thread (Carhire3000, uscarrental etc....).

Be careful with Hertz, they tend to keep rental cars a lot longer than other firms for some reason. I tend to try and avoid them. Alamo / National always seem to be the best as they allow you to pick your car and have decent stock.

To be fair that echoes my experience as well. The Camaro SS convertible we had from Hertz was well run-in, and not in the best condition either.
