Road Tripping in the USA!

No mate, afraid not. Was back in 2003 like I said. Been to Vegas a fair few times though. About 5 last count :O

Just to add that we walked to Fry's from Planet Hollywood, not Los Angeles!! ROFL!!! Ended up getting a cab back though ;)

I was there this year, crashing my hire car outside planet hollywood on the 10th of July, the car was reading 140f, it was insanely hot, couldnt even eat dinner out that night it was so hot.

Anyone road tripping should double/triple check their insurance too, and not make the £1000 mistake I made.

I was at the Big Sur / Carmel / Monterey last week. Unfortunately it was a little foggy for good views. No big deal for me though. I'm out there every couple of months on business. My favorite drive in the entire US is the US17, from San Fran, down to the US1 through the Santa Cruz mountains. Fairly high speed adrenaline drive that is. Very twisty, fast moving traffic, with huge redwoods chopping past you. Always ensures a good grip on the steering wheel. You're literally going around blind bends at 60-70mph. No hard shoulder, nothing. Just two lanes of fast moving traffic, very twisty with steep gradients. If someone has spun out, around the corner you're in trouble. Which is what makes it so much fun. Also you're high up, so going through clouds at times. Best off doing the drive very early or very late, so that there's no much traffic, then you can use both lanes to yourself for maximum speed though the bends !

I'll be interested in your replies as this is what I've got ("or similar") to drive from NYC to LA starting Saturday after next.

Anyone driven a Chevy Traverse?

Don't use an SUV for a road trip. They drive you. You should be the one driving. Much more fun. Especially out in CA! Maybe Florida where everything is straight. But even so, go for a car. Actually I have specifically asked in my Avis Preferred profile. NO SUV'S !!! :D

Can anyone recommend any cool towns to stay at along PCH, or other fun stuff to do? I did Santa Barbara last time which I loved. Looking for reasonably chilled out towns with good food and bars - even Wineries if there are any along the way.

Carmel is very nice and high end if you want that sort of thing. Monterery is also very nice.

Really your only choice is Monterey or Carmel. Also if no-one else has mentioned it. Make sure you pay the $9.50 to do the 17mile drive. It's valid for the entire day.

Indeed, my aunty lives there and when I have to go over she goes and stays with her friend and gives me the house!! She pitches up in the morning to make breaky and put the coffee on, how ace is that! :D

I only saw it fairly briefly but it did seem quite nice. If you're down that way then it might be worth stopping off at the Natural Bridges State Beach which is very close but I wouldn't particularly go out of my way to see it.

Just realised that I forgot to upload any pictures before, excuse the dots on the picture as I've no idea how they got there, must have been smudges on the lens.

Looking the opposite way towards LA - as close as I wanted to get to LA.

One of the Natural Bridges near Santa Cruz, slightly further round to the right is a bigger beach but there's not a huge deal more there from memory.

Ive got some pics somewhere from my run down the West Coast from 1991. They are ace because I look think and sporty like all you lot on here. :(

Thought I'd get it for a laugh and it was also the cheapest car on the list, only got it for a day when I'm in San antonio next week. Looks massive! 2.1 tons of SUV

[TW]Fox, looks like an awesome trip and as I've been questioning you in Vegas Hotels thread you know I'm planning the same :D Sorry for clogging up your thread but was wondering if you could give me the names of the places you stayed in Death Valley (Bishop) and Yosemite?

Thanks pal.

Sure - Bishop was tricky as its basically in the middle of nowhere so I ended up at a Ramada Motel. Then drove to Yosemite and then out of Yosemite staying oernight in a larger town called Modesto.

Looks fantastic, what kinda beehaitchpee do those things have?!

300bhp.

I'm sure I'll be in and out of this thread over the coming months; just booked 3 weeks in Florida at the start of September, and a convertible obviously. Hoping for a Mustang as even with a crap gearbox it just has to be done!

Has anyone taken a road trip around Florida? Thinking of Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Key Largo, Naples, Tampa then back to Orlando. Only a paltry 1000 miles but looking forward to it already.
