Road Tripping in the USA!

Just come back from the USA, i took out an Alamo rental for a Mustang or similar. After having a Camaro for the last 2 times i thought id give the mustang a try...

..wow I wish i hadn't... 12000 mile 2016 mustang convertable... leather seats were horrid, that cant be real leather?! faux leather dash, looks/feels cheap.. then theres the Christmas cracker quality switchgear, seriously those 4 chrome "toggle" switches under the stereo remind me of a model airfix kit... you know the type, when you snap the plastic parts you need off the moulded group.

And it had a huge annoying rattle, i located it to the washer jets vibrating under the hood... fixed that myself, still hated it and so returned it after just 1 day and collected a Camaro, which is a much better car

They are absolute junk and it baffles me why everyone is so obsessed with them. They are cheap coupes over there and it shows in every aspect of them. The rental companies must love the over odds amounts of money tourists clamour to pay to rent them.

I did it once, ticked the box, never again :p

South Rim is the place to go - the West Rim isn't the proper Grand Canyon.

Book a flight from Vegas - takes 40 minutes to get there.

Thanks for the quick responses both.

Fox, regarding flight to/from South Rim, I assume you're just suggesting just the flight - then what's the best way of getting from GC airport? Assume some sort of public transport / bookable services to get to the main areas?

Various tour companies offer packages which includes the flight and bus transfers to the main viewpoints. We went with Vision Air. You leave at about 9am and are back on the strip mid afternoon.

Though this was 6 years ago

The problem that you have is that you are presumably trying to one-way the car from Chicago to California. Rental firms do not want Illinois plated cars going all the way to California, so they'll put various measures in place to discourage it - mostly by restricting the available classes and adding significant one-way fees to the cost of the rental.

I never really get the whole Route 66 thing - as well as coming up against this significant one-way issue by doing 'Route 66' (Which hasn't really existed for half a century anyway) in its entirety you spend 50% of your trip in the middle of flat plains giving you less time to focus on the other 50% which is absolutely epic.

A better idea would be to fly into Chicago, spend some time there, and then fly on to somewhere like Denver and pick up the trip properly from there. From Denver to the West Coast there is almost no section of the country which isn't mind blowing in terms of scenery and interest. You might still come up against a one-way issue though.

4 of us drove across the fly over states, like you are, in a Ford Expedition. I'd hate to do it in anything smaller tbf, especially something like a Mustang. It's boring as **** and you'll probably spend most of the time asleep.

Why not just fly and spend the extra time visiting things around Vegas?

I really don't get the recurring questions here lately about driving that route and then not bothering with the scenic bits nearer the West coast..

Why anyone would want to fly when they can drive and find all sorts of scenery and treasures is beyond me.

Because most of these route suggestions major on the central states which are flat and avoid the really very scenic bits because they spend all their time driving through features prairies :p

Ok, I'm confused. I'm going to Vegas soon and want to hire a car just for one day. I've done some quotes on USCarHire for a "standard convertible" which should hopefully be a Mustang.

What's confusing me is that I'm getting quotes from the same company for different prices. From Alamo for example, I see £54 for silver inclusive or £62 for silver inclusive with GPS. I get that. But what I don't get is that there are options for silver basic inclusive at £73 and silver basic inclusive with GPS at £79.

From what I understand, silver and silver basic are the same except that silver lets you add an additional driver, whereas silver basic doesn't. If that is the case then why is silver basic a fair bit more expensive? Is there something I'm missing? Everything looks identical otherwise.

This is often the case with US Car hire.

btw, one day rental is a total ripoff. Longer term you pay half the daily rate!

Can I ask what would your 3 days in Yosemite look like? I just want to see the sights really, not go on day long hikes and wrestle with bears, the missus isnt a particularly outdoorsy type.

This comes up all the time. Somebody says oh I will spend a day there and people come back and argue that unless you spend 3 years there with an expedition crew you'll miss out.

Yes, spending days in Yosemite is amazing. Yes, you see much more when you do hikes. Yes, you miss some of what it's about by day tripping.

But a day in Yosemite is still great, you still see wonderful things and you still get a taste for what it is about. When you are on a 2 week holiday you simply cannot cover anything in depth, it's all about getting a taste for the various areas and perhaps planning return trips.

So that part of your trip, for me, works - perhaps not going all the way to San Francisco on the same day.

Bishop does crop up quite often, I think the vegas to sf side of this is the big potential problem so i'll have to rejig that by the sound of things.

Modesto is a good shout, closer to Yosemite so there isnt as big a rush to get from there to SF, plus its close enough to SF that we could spend pretty much a full day in SF before actually staying over.

Exactly what I did - overnight in Bishop, then a day in Yosemite, then overnight in Modesto, then into San Francisco for lunchtime. Worked well.

I have yes. I had an Infiniti G35 on a Luxury reservation.

The Impala in the premium category is the newer model. It's a better car than an MKZ and the MKZ is typically a class above anyway.

Fox whats the best time to book for Los Angeles going at the end of September?
Convertibles which I like, are currently over £800 for 20 days.
When I booked in Sepember 2015 for the same amount of days, I got a Camaro for £565. Odd why it's so expensive now.

Brexit seems to have passed many in this thread by :p
