Road Tripping in the USA!

In an attempt to bring this back on topic - this is our planned route for August this year.

Two kids in tow so not too long in Vegas. More time in Yosemite, Zion etc

NB this map is showing the Tioga pass as closed which is shouldn't be come August!

i'd rather stick with my one debit, one credit card, arrangement than have to apply for all kinds of different cards for different purposes. My bank charges quite a bit for ATM withdrawals therefore I find it easier to have cash. Hope that's OK.

Its OK, but in the context of the discussion it is by the far the best way to do things....

I can just imagine you trying to tip a valet with a credit card! :p

The point is you treat your destination as you would anywhere else including the UK, cash availability is the same there as it is here because they have cash machines too!

It's a shame you didn't have longer as your kids would have loved Tombstone (it is pretty cool). Bit of a mission out of your way though and Phoenix isn't even nice enough to make it worthwhile.

I've already explained, so I wont bother again. :)

Perhaps we could talk about something else?

Rather than bat it away why not take the well intentioned advice in future and save yourself the security risk and pointless hassle of taking thousands in cash with you just because its a different currency :p

My bank has high ATM fees abroad (minimum £4 as far as I can tell on their website). I think I'd rather take one lot of cash to last a fair period and then do as few top ups as possible during the trip. Easier than opening an account at another bank (which might have lower fees) and going through all that entails.

And I never said thousands did I?

I was only referring to my own experiences where I found it easier on more occasions than I expected to use cash. Not really that hard to understand. Like I said, I will still use credit cards a lot, especially for things like fuel.

You seem to be deliberately ignoring the advice

Oh well, some people, for some reason, just wont take advice. I will never understand it, but why should i care!

Lets move on :)

Getting back on topic, I've still got three hotels to book for my upcoming trip. Does anyone have any recommendations for the Santa Barbara and Monterey areas? I've essentially got three nights to book between LA and San Francisco. Wondering if three different hotels is better than spending two nights at the same place (maybe Carmel or Monterey?)? Also, anything else to do / places to go to near the PCH?

Thanks

I found Monterrey, for obvious reasons given it's a popular retreat for LA's rich and famous, very expensive and as a result just stayed at a Super 8. Which was actually fine.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Monterrey and it was the best hotel on our entire trip by a long distance. Was only around £100 a night as well.

We stayed there for 1 night (in hindsight I would have liked another night to be honest), 1 night in San Luis Obispo and 2 nights in Santa Babara before flying home from LAX (our flight was at 6pm so we were able to leave SB at about midday and drive straight to LAX).

I felt the split between each hotel was just right.

Oooh that hotel looks nice. Shame it's currently showing at £135 per night plus $22 resort fee! Could still be tempted though!

Thanks!

You did very well there, when I looked it was rather closer to Joe T's experience! I don't often end up in a Super 8 (Infact only twice) but routinely paying over £100 a night is a quick way to ensure the trip costs so much that its hard to justify the following year.

I know, I was amazed at the quality for the money I paid.

If only every hotel for £100 a night was that good.

To be honest I think I'd make an exception and book it at £135 (providing you aren't going over budget elsewhere).

I've just had a look at Trip Advisor and its put me off a bit. Thinking of Carmel Lodge instead, but I'm sure that will change next time I get the chance to have a look around!

In SB my parents recently stayed at the Mason Beach Inn in SB - nice little hotel close to the beach and wasn't too expensive so may be worth checking the rates for when you are planning to pass through - unfortunately Hotel Rich_L is closed this summer :p
