Road Tripping in the USA!

Speed limits are low and I'm kinda worried I was going too fast everywhere. Hopefully no backlash from that.

The only place I've seen fixed speed cameras in the US is around Washington D.C., so unless you got pulled over you haven't got anything to worry about. There are a fair few red light cameras around though.

Personally I would come through Grand Teton national park (as that's what I did) The Teton's are a good visit, however after Glacier the Rockies around Jackson Hole (Tetons) and SLC may not be so scenic.

My photos' aren't online anymore but just google image seach Grand Teton and you will get the idea. I really enjoyed it and think the Tetons/Yellowstone as a Duo have to be one of the best National Parks. I didn't get to Glacier / the Going to the Sun road. I would really love to do it.

I can easily go through Teton. I can go via Yellowstone through Teton and then onto the 89 like this;

Bump, putting all my documents together now.

Looking for any recommendations for things to do / places to eat / etc.... in the following places;

Seattle
Vancouver
Banff / Jasper / Canmore
Yellowstone NP
Salt Lake City
Portland

We've got the obvious stuff so anything that you found or came across that you thought was really cool and worth a visit.

The road from Alpine Wy. to Evanston Wy is quite a boring drive. If you head towards Idaho Falls is much more secnic along the snake river. Then I 15 is not as bad to travel to SLC with more places to stop such as rest areas and small towns to stop for drinks and snacks. I have travaeled both many times as I live in Idaho Falls. The speed limit on I 15 is also now 80 mph so you would make better time. HTH

Very helpful, the only reason I'd picked to go along the 89 was because someone earlier in this thread I believe said it was a better drive, but they might have been referring to only a certain section of it?

Hopefully I can revive this thread as I'm after a bit of advice and guidance from all of you seasoned USA tourists.

Me and a couple of friends are looking at a trip in around mid to late 2016. Unfortunately due to work and house buying commitments I can only do 7-10 nights.

I've seen countless recommendations for first timers to start in California, as it gives you a taste of so many different aspects - stunning views, national parks, beautiful cities etc. However, narrowing down a rough outline of what and where we want to go is proving a bit difficult. Interested in San Francisco, San Diego and Las Vegas at the moment.

On the basis that this is our first trip, for 7-10 nights, where do you guys recommend starting and finishing?

With 7-10 days only you may find San Francisco and San Diego too far apart if you want Vegas too.

Try into and out of LA and cover San Diego and Vegas

Btw, posting this from Arizona :p

I'm not doing a road trip, but I'm in San Antonio for 12 nights and the 95RON equivalent petrol is £0.35/litre. I thought £0.69/litre in Bosnia 2 weeks ago was cheap!

For what it's worth, the auto box in a Ford Focus is truly dreadful. Don't hire one.

The average price in San Antonio is roughly $2.05, but I've seen the odd station selling it for $1.95. Apparently it's even cheaper south of San Antonio because there's a refinery down there so the transportation costs are lower.

Currently in Tahoe after driving through Yosemite today, which was breathtaking. Stayed in Yosemite last night after driving from San Francisco and took a drive to Glacier Ridge which is an astonishing site at sunset. Fly home Friday, in Tahoe tonight and tomorrow and can recommend the San Fran - Yosemite - Tahoe - San Fran loop.

I'm currently in L.A. on business, been here a few days. I haven't exactly had any 'stunning' drives yet, the 'best' parts so far were driving down Mulholland :o Also interesting to drive through some parts of Beverley Hills.

Anyway, I absolutely cannot wait to get the business part of this over because I've got 10 days to make my way up the pacific coast highway and then jet out of San Francisco :cool:

Completely unplanned trip, short notice business trip, thought I'd take advantage of it and see where I could roam in 10 days :D

I cant believe how much the cars over here suck. Its like they ran out of time designing the cars and just threw them into production. :p

And it's fallen further since then!

3 weeks today until I travel to San Diego, were doing 3 nights in vegas, coming back to San diego for about 5 days (my Brother lives in San Diego.. Only get to see him once a year), then going to to San Fransisco for 2 nights, then back down to San Diego.

Any particular route/specific places to stop at on the san diego - san fran - san diego trip?
