Road Tripping in the USA!

Its the only option coming up under the "luxury" Tab on the alamo uk website.

Options are Small, Medium, Family, Luxury, People Carrier SUV

I think i'm just going to book it as I've used Alamo with a lot of work trips and found it pretty easy to just ask at the desk for what car I wanted (although I was paying for it then!)

Just checking in from a diner in Mammoth Lakes. Had to take a 200 mile detour from Yosemite yesterday because the passes across the Sierra Nevada were closed.

By the time we found the next open pass (route 88), it was dark and we had to make the 70 mile drive across the mountains in a driving rainstorm and near zero visibility. Turned into a snowstorm higher up, then we were forced to stop by the police while they dragged another car out of a ditch.

The worst drive I've ever had to make, but quite the adventure. It really puts the scale of the country into perspective when you are forced 6hrs and 200 miles out of your way just to get to a destination barely 50-60 miles from where you started. Incredible :)

Anyone got any hire company recommendations for a west coast road trip? It's quite a long one (4 weeks) and I've got my heart set on a Mustang. Here's the itinerary if anyone's interested:

Use alamo uk and the 10% discount code i posted a while back

Im going again on saturday, hopefully they'll have a decent selection of cars. Last time they tried to fob me off with a 3 series BMW and a Crysler 300 from the "luxury" selection.. I ended up waiting for a Cadillac XTS that was being washed.

If I could make a couple of suggestions.

Lone Pine could be known as Lone Gene....it is not a memorable place. Arrive late, leave early.

Not sure what your plans are in Page but again there is not a huge amount there, unless you plan to spend a lot of time doing stuff on Lake Powell. If it was me I would spend one night in Page and do an extra night in Zion. Zion is one of my favourite places on earth. Walk the narrows if you can. Be prepared to get very wet though. Note the tide marks, you cannot avoid walking in the water as the canyon is so narrow -

I best post some photos from my trip!

We covered LA, San Diego, Palm Springs, Route 66, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Mammoth Lakes, Yosemite, Modesto, San Fransisco, Sausolito, Monterrey, Carmel, Pismo, Oxnard then back to LA.

The Lone Pine stop is just to break up the driving.

Once we get to Page we'll mostly be doing nature stuff like going for hikes. Is there plenty of that in Page?

Page does have it's highlights. Antelope Canyon for one, Glen Canyon Dam, HorseShoe bend. All well worth a visit. 1 night is enough as has been said though.

Horseshoe bend is absolutely stunning.

We missed Antelope Canyon which was a real shame.

IMO for Page I'd aim to arrive mid afternoon 4pm and leave by midday the next day. That'll allow you to do Horseshoe bend, have dinner, sleep, breakfast, go to Antelope Canyon and then head off to your next destination.

I'd certainly look to spend more time in San Diego as well looking at your dates.

Don't forget to visit Cedar Breaks National Monument when you are near Bryce - we actually preferred CBNM to Bryce Canyon.

Just come back from the USA, i took out an Alamo rental for a Mustang or similar. After having a Camaro for the last 2 times i thought id give the mustang a try...

..wow I wish i hadn't... 12000 mile 2016 mustang convertable... leather seats were horrid, that cant be real leather?! faux leather dash, looks/feels cheap.. then theres the Christmas cracker quality switchgear, seriously those 4 chrome "toggle" switches under the stereo remind me of a model airfix kit... you know the type, when you snap the plastic parts you need off the moulded group.

And it had a huge annoying rattle, i located it to the washer jets vibrating under the hood... fixed that myself, still hated it and so returned it after just 1 day and collected a Camaro, which is a much better car

^^ Echos my thoughts about mustangs. Crap cars. I've avoided them as rentals the last couple of times for a number of reasons.

They are absolute junk and it baffles me why everyone is so obsessed with them. They are cheap coupes over there and it shows in every aspect of them. The rental companies must love the over odds amounts of money tourists clamour to pay to rent them.

I did it once, ticked the box, never again :p

they really are crap, it just felt so cheap, like it was trying too hard.. The ford logo on the windscreen under the rear view mirror.. the pony logo projected flood lamps on the mirrors, then theres the triangular swage lines on the bonnet, they look hideous from the cockpit.

The Camaro just doesn't feel tacky, im not saying its the greatest car, but its honest, feels better built, well laid out and just isn't a hunk of junk like the mustang is.

Agree about the mustangs we done the usual 3 week trip in September this year. What a pile of **** the mustang was. I would never hire one again although if I knew someone about to do that trip I would still say hire one if they wanted too as it's good for the one off experience and because it's kind of expected for this trip.

We made the HUGE mistake of paying the hertz premium for a guaranteed one as we didn't want to be stuck with some other convertible for the honeymoon (after reading that some people get stuck with a Chrysler etc). I think now the only convertible these hire companies do is the mustang and it was a few years back where they had the other options. Every stop on the PCH was surrounded with mustangs.
