I have some sort of rodent in my attic, a few weeks ago one of my CCTV cameras went B&W, I thought it was just an old camera and was dying.
Then a couple of days ago I notice it had gone off line,
When I removed it from the ceiling the wire had been chewed.

can anyone tell from these images if this is rats or mice ?
I haven't been up in the attic to inspect yet but its not an easy attic to get into

Could be either. Time to put some bait traps up there.

Check your service ducts for points of ingress, soil stack etc...

i know where they have got in (I think). I had a look around the property and both ends of the soffit on one side of the building are completely open, I didn't realise they had been left this way when they were replaced a couple of years ago.
Should I clear the infestation first or block the soffits first ?

I'd attempt to get rid of the infestation first as it might have been them that created it entrance and will do so again. Get rid of as many as you can then block it up when the numbers drop.

I'd suggest one of those buckets with the seesaw on the lid and bait it with your treat of choice (chocolate, peanut butter etc). The vermin climb up a ramp to the top of the bucket and they fall in. Make it a murder-bucket by filling it with water or dispense with the live mice/rats as you see fit. Poison can be a bit risky if you have pets and other wildlife around that may snack on the mice they find, plus you don't know where they go to die and rot.

I'm not a roofer or a rat catcher, but I'd probably do both at the same time. Contain the threat and eradicate, with prejudice.

In all seriousness I'd get a roofer to examine the ventilation setup in your loft, those soffits may be like that for a reason. That said you could put some mesh of a vent or something there to stop ingress and keep an airflow.

Ive used the black plastic snap traps off amazon with great success for mice, baited with peanut butter.

I recall reading that mice are more likely to chew things than rats, where rats are more likely to carry diseases.

Good luck!

well i need to replace the camera in question, so might as well set it up in the attic first to determine what I'm dealing with.

also could be an elephant up there with the size of the gaps that have been left by the joiners.
