Rollcage by ATD/Psygnosis

Loved this on the PSone :).

Also, just looking at the Wipeout series page on Wiki, we haven't had a PC version since 1996. Shocking :(.

Oh man, never played the first one, but loved Rollcage (stage?) 2. Must have been one of the few games I ever fully 100% completed on the PS1.

I still remember completing the final final track (hydroponics?) on hard mode , after racing perfectly I slightly messed up coming onto the huge home straight ( was a series of raised platforms over bushes and other crap, so if you fell off you basically lost) but I luckily had kept a turbo spare giving me enough of a crazy boost to hit a slight jump and launch myself just long and high enough to take the lead milliseconds away from the line before landing and crash/spinning over the line.

Don't think I ever concentrated or was more tense about anything before or since.

One of my all time Fav PS1 games - fantastic Racer!!

One of the best things about PS1 was the discs could be played in sterios! Loved putting the game in the car CD player for real driving music haha!

Rollcage was competing against Wipeout, produced by, guess who... Psygnosis. So yeah, it got shafted quite a bit. And it didn't have the 'cool' factor if Wipeout.

That's one game I wished they'd bring into the current gen consoles. Insanely fast and twitchy racer. One of the codies made a turbo version he always thought the original one was too slow :) There's some contractual tie-ins iirc. I think the IP is still registered with Psygnosis.

Wow.. I remember this game! Great link too, thanks.

Edit: Mounting the ISO in Daemon tools doesnt seem to work..
The Setup.exe just closes when I open it.

Unzipping the ISO with 7zip works better, I can actually install it. But then when I try to run it it says "must be installed from CD". :(

Edit2: After a restart it worked fine :P

This game has LAN / online support doesn't it ?

I would love to play this online :D

There's no games online any more, though setting up a server is a trivial matter. I could host one in no time at all (my work connection regularly gets abused for Q3 and UT2004) but I doubt there is any interest :(

Edit: Looks like there is still some life in the concept :D http://www.gorcx.net/

Haha, ive still got this game in mint condition, along with my original psx. Think it was like the 3rd ps1 game I got.

Me and my mates used to play this to death, the arena mode on top of the skyscrapers was great fun!

Infact, youve just tempted me to pull out and hook up the old playstation, nostalgia here i come :)

Absolutely loved this game and it's sequel, in fact I have Rollcage II on my HTPC and still have the odd blast :D

Wipeout > *

Wipeout 3 : SE was an inreadible game. It wasn't just extra tracks, as people generally thought, it had tweeked physics and tons of bugfixes. Well worth hunting down.

List of differences here:

Such a shame people thought that it just had a few of the older tracks so it wasn't worth getting. :(

Anyway, on-topic... Yes rollcage was good too. Had no idea there was a PC version. May check it out. Although I imagine an emulated PSX version in a good resolution + 2xSAI and tweeks would make it look way better than the PC version.

Not that I would do that of course. :)

is there no music included with the abandon ware version? due to copright etc...old soundtrack was awesome :(

Fat Boy Slim may have something to say about his music being enjoyed without royalties being paid :(

However, the soundtrack is avaiable "elsewhere" so just play it in a media player of choice! Also good with the Wipeout 2097 sound track. If anyone is up for a race or two next week we could make it happen!
