 Intel vs. AMD

Hey am going to build a new game computer, wanted to pitch a question, Ive been with AMD for some time now but i wanted to pitch the question to you guys.

Whats better, Intel or AMD?

Appreciate your input!

Thanks much :D
Can you not just decide yourself what you want and is better for you, instead of making a topic with Title: Intel vs. AMD

the current gen CPU's = AMD (A64 and Intel PIV)

if your going to wait and build in a few months, Intel's Conroe looks to stop the living heck out of AMD's AM2...

although AMD have litterally only just released AM2 so things can (and will more than likely) get much better from here.

from the early previews on Intel's next CPU's... the only thing that can hold them back... is the one thing Intel have fumbled on in the past (as far as enthusiast gamers/builders goes)... the pricing.

I reckon Intel's pricing will be OK this time round.

They really really want their performance crown back with the enthusiasts.

Just my opinion to be honest though.

If you're waiting a month, I would say wait another month for Conroe.

The long term benefit of AM2 is that it is apparently AMDs socket for the next few years so it will offer a potential upgrade path in a year or two. This may not be the case with the Conroe.

So does that mean it will be like the opterons on 939? Low voltages and high clocks?

Not necessarily, S939 Opterons were different as they were cherry picked San Diego/Toledo cores. S940 Opterons were just a lucky dip when it came to overclocking and I don't expect SF to be any different.

What I would be interested to know is what the extra pins are for, is it for multi-CPU comms, or for additional memory bandwidth?

looks like conroa in July (if it plays games well) & AMD at xmas (with lower micron & lower latency RAM)
I'm waiting till xmas anyway as my next upgrade will be a dx10 system

i dont think the gap is as big as what people make it out to be. for now id reccomend a system based around the highly OCable e pentium D 805, you will need DDR2 memory and there are conroe compatible boards out there now. this will leave you in a good position to upgrade to conroe if you want.

but most people say that AMD are better for gaming where as intel are better for encoding / number crunching & encoding
just depends what ** looking for really

I can't wait to see some benchmarks on those cornrow systems :p

Meaningful input: who knows? It's all a bit muddled at the mo. Is AM2 as bad as it appears, or have AMD got an uber-chip waiting? Conroe does look good, but let it unfold I say.
If you etch a crop circle on the motherboard, you can really overclock those cornrow systems to silly speeds. :)

AM2 doesn't appear to be at all bad. It appears to be what it is - 939 with DDR2, for an architecture that was rarely bottlenecked on memory bandwidth with DDR. The Athlon64 CPUs are the same apart from the memory controller, hence the minimal performance increase.

If AMD had something special close to release, I think they would be talking about it more, as Intel have been doing with Conroe/Merom/Core 2. I think they're going to have to toddle along with what they have until they can develop something new, as Intel did with P4.

For the game computer that prompted the question - I'd hang on for a bit if you can wait, to see what Core 2 is like when it's released, mainly in terms of price, but of course focus mainly on the graphics card.

Here we go again, everyone is arguing over which company produces the best processer and even though it has been asked and answered so many times, people still forget the answer is AMD. :D :D

some right mini hitlers about in this thread, could have been a good thread.
Not entitled "Intel vs AMD", it couldn't. Such threads may as well be entitled "FLAME WAR FLAME WAR FLAME WAR".

Of course not, the thread has been totally civilised, the only thing spoiling it has been the people going on about how it'll start a flame war, close the thread etc.

Have to agree with you there dude. :p

Well that was post number nine and it hasn't been to bad TBH.
But conroe will thrash MY opty 170 at 2.8ghz so I guess the answer to this thread is.....

INTEL V AMD.....and the winner is

INTEL

But we all knew that anyway! :D
