If that also comes with an extreme price tag, then AMD can forget it. We can buy an E6600/E6700, mobo and DDR2 ram for that much.

Anyway, we shall find out very soon, June is almost here :D

If the E6600 is around 230 they will fly off the shelves.
But some how I can't see that really but lets hope I'm wrong. :p

It might well be exciting if a 2.66GHz Conroe is a third of the price of a 2.8GHz A64 FX60 (which is a strong possibility). Conroe does look like a very large increase in price/performance ratio, rather more so than is normal. That conroe isn't the top model at release, let alone in the next few months as manufacturing is refined. There is good evidence of a lot of clockspeed headroom in the design.

Also, I think the performance gap is larger than that one example implies.

For the time being. I doubt if AMD's engineers have been completely empty of ideas for the last couple of years. AMD will respond. They'll be behind for a while, as conroe is a lot better than P4, but they'll respond.

The low-power A64s are a possible stop-gap, since they might provide the option of much higher clock speed than the current A64 cores at the same sort of wattage. Conroe is a more efficient chip, but if AMD can drum up a clock speed advantage on an A64, they could match conroe.

Top Intel (1) Xeon Woodcrest 1333Mhz S771
Top AMD (1) Opteron 285 1000Mhz S940 / Opteron 256 1000Mhz S940

Top Intel (2) P4 955 1066Mhz S775
Top AMD (2) FX, 1XX Opteron, X2, AM2

There you have it. AMD make 3-4 types of CPU to Intels 1.

Speed =Cost/Manufacturer.

In a nutshell a DRAW.

My Opty 165@3Gig was less than a third of the price of a FX60! :D

Bang for buck goodness ;)

Still wont be getting a Conroe though . . .
