Roof boxes

After nearly a year I finally got to put it to use :D

Don't like being limited to 82mph but hey ho, very functional and completely changed the loading car routine. Took the double buggy, bed guards, kids beach stuff, all the awkward shaped stuff. Decent.

Mmmmmmmm... Theres something about a big estate car with a nice aerodynamic roof box on it that gets my juices flowing.

I hope you're going on a transcontinental trip. :D

82MPH is probably an indicated 85+ you yob. Slow down. :p

Oh ****, I meant 70mph - damn autocorrect

That was a two night trip in the UK... 1 suitcase full of nappies and baby food, milk and a million of their clothes, another full of the wifes stuff - I packed 2 pairs of shorts, vests, boxers and my flip flops which could have fit in my glove box hahaha. Actually there were also 2 rucksacks and 3 bags4life plus the cooler bag... I don't even, 2 nights? What? :(

Which bits did you get and where from please? I’ve been thinking about a roof box for my F11, and wasn’t really sure where to start. I assume the roof bars also fit other cars with different feet (my wife has a Mazda CX-5 that we’d also like to fit it to).

Not going away this year so might see if I can get some ‘end of season’ deals in a couple of months.

Box: 'Thule Motion XT XL' (500 litre)
From Halfrods e-bay Account @ £432

Bars: 'Thule WingBar Edge Black' (9595B) flush fit 89.6cm & 97.6cm for the F11
Fixing Kit: 'Thule Fitting Kit' (4022)
Both from roofracks.co.uk @ £280

I ordered the Box first, waited for it to arrive so I could provide the Key code to RoofRacks.co.uk when ordering the bars and fixing kit to ensure all locks (box and bars) use the same key.

My bars are flush fit (cut to size) for the F11, if you wanted to have flexible usage then do not go for flush bars. Perhaps live chat the roofracks.co.uk guys and they'll help you identify the bar and fitting kit required for whichever box you choose :)

I
I made a hoist into the roof of the garage. With a rope that goes around it.

We've had a montblanc box (320l) for years. However I couldn't find the closed rail feet to replace the old ford focus bolt into roof feet. So in the end I replaced the old whistle at 50+ square roof bars with some Thule aerobars and closed rail feet. Still has wind noise but that's a given considering the size of the box. The montblanc grey has faded to a green colour (it's been in the garage and out of sunlight for most of it's life).

The main thing with roof boxes is the difference between mounting location of the foot/bar and the separation supported by the roof box itself. On the focus, I had to drill an additional set of holes in the box to extend the range of the box spacing by a bout an inch. The Peugeot 3008 SUV has more forgiving spacings for the feet, however the roof curve of the ralls means you still need to keep the front of the box forward.

I have the 5008 and find the placement for the roofbar feet (dimples on the rails) too close together for my admittedly large roofbox. Is it better on the 3008, or do you ignore the dimples?

Thanks a lot for the info.

it wan't a perfect match - although better than nothing. The main issue is that if I use the dimples directly, the roof box sits nose up rather than flat and level. In the end I found a position the roof box sits level and spaced out on the roof bars. It just sits a little forward (unless you put something to bunk the back of the roof box up slightly.

How did you find those bars @NVP much noise?
With no box on top I only notice them with the roof or window open about motorway speed, still got them on so will take them for a run and find out what speed it actually was. Decent though :)
